Love Your Twins

You love your boobs; you know you do.

That’s why it’s important to look out for them now.

But, here is a frightening fact: Breast cancer in the most-common cancer among women (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer). The American Cancer Society estimates that the chances of a woman developing breast cancer in her lifetime is one to eight. These odds increase with age. So, as young women, you will be at risk in the future.

Your youth is an advantage. You can lower the stakes by picking up a healthy lifestyle and maintaining it for the rest of your life:

1) Minimize binge-drinking. Yeah, you’re in college and the alcohol consumption is likely to drastically decrease once you’ve graduated. But now, don’t overdue it too often.

2) Lay off the cigs. Tobacco is bad for so many reasons. If you can’t quit just yet, simply lower your light-up sessions.

3) Eat healthy. Foods high in fiber and low in fat are key. Don’t forget about fruits and veggies; they contain tons of vitamins and other great properties to keep your body strong inside and out.

4) Pass on pesticides. Any exposure to chemicals or toxins is harmful. Remember to always wash your produce before you take a bite.

5) Know your family. It’s extremely important to know your family’s medical past. Breast cancer is a greater threat if someone in your family has had it.

6) Examine yourself. Visit your gynecologist annually. He or she will show you how to detect irregularities in breast tissue. However, it’s even more important to continue to give yourself regular breast exams. Doing so will ensure that you are attentive to your breasts year-round.

Ask Ryan …

I’ve been with my boyfriend for the last two years and, though I love him, I’m starting to get bored. To get off, I fantasize about other guys while we’re having sex. Is this wrong?

Love,

Bored in Boise

Most of my answers stress the importance of communication in a relationship. This is no different. You need to stop wasting his time and, more importantly, your own time. If you plan on getting married, that’s the chance to be bored with the same person &#8217 not when you’re young and full of raging hormones. Go out, have fun and stop settling for a relationship because it’s comfortable or convenient. If you’re bored now after only two years, really, where’s the relationship going? Stop fantasizing about those “other” guys and go find them!

My boyfriend met this girl on Myspace.com. He says she is really cool and just likes to hang out with her for skating boarding and stuff. He says they are only friends. I enjoy skateboarding, too, but he prefers doing that with “her.” Does he think I am not cool? Should I be worried?

Thanks,

Unsure in Colorado

Unless he knew this girl before you, this type of relationship shouldn’t exist, especially since you enjoy these activities, too. I don’t think he feels you’re uncool, but he may just find enjoyment in hanging out with someone new. Either way, he shouldn’t be hanging out with her. I don’t think you should be worried, nor act like a paranoid girlfriend, but bring up this point: Would he feel comfortable if you met a guy and started hanging out with him? Chances are, he wouldn’t let that happen. Therefore, you shouldn’t, either. Trust is the most important thing in a relationship because it affects every aspect. Get this concern out in the open and discuss it with him. Like always, communication is key. Don’t push it under the rug.

Stroke His Ego

Guys, if they have any brains, are always giving girls compliments. Don’t guys like it, too?

- Jamie, NYU

Guys crave compliments just as much as girls, and there’s nothing better than boosting your guy’s ego to remind him that he rocks your world.

A great way to do this is by saying nice things to your friends while he’s within earshot. If you’re on the phone with a girlfriend, tell her how cool it was when he surprised you with homemade dinner or how hot he looks in that new shirt he got. It lets him know that you are still hot for him without telling him directly.

So go ahead and gossip to all your friends; just make sure he’s listening!

Spotlight Your Smile

It’s an obvious (and annoying!) fact of life – as you age, your teeth go from white to light yellow. From yummy lattes and cappuccinos, to your fave colas, iced teas and red wines, your once pearly whites are, well, no longer.

But there’s no need to fret! You can have a star smile without the porcelain veneer price tag.

Try SexySmile, created by Hollywoods best-kept secret – celebrity cosmetic dentist Dr. Pia Lieb.

This adorably sleek, double-ended tooth-whitener, breath-freshener and luscious lip-gloss-and-color-in-one luxuriously brightens your pearls with one half and polishes your pout with the other.

Made with the stain-fighter hydrogen peroxide, the whitener side can be used as a spot treatment: just six to 10 seconds on each dirty tooth for instant results. See your teeth go up to 12 shades lighter in just one week!

The gloss side, in five gorgeous glam-gloss shades from Bombshell Blonde to Stripped Bare, is made with a blue base to prevent the yellowing effect that yellow-based glosses have on teeth. Made with key nurturing ingredients, the long-lasting lavish glosses guarantee luscious lips for a seductive smile.

SexySmile is available at www.drlieb.com for $28.50.

Boost the Burn

Want to be a smart, savvy and successful dieter? Here are five fabulous techniques to help you stay on track.

1) Begin with Breakfast

In the morning, your body has gone without food for at least eight hours. It’s hungry; don’t deprive it. Skipping breakfast starves your body and slows your metabolism. Speed that metabolism up by eating a morning meal and your body will continue to burn fat all day.

2) Stop Starving!

Cutting too many calories puts your body into starvation mode, causing your body to hold onto fat and calories. Don’t skip meals or cut too many calories!

3) Mini Meals = Mega Boost

Eating smaller meals more frequently gives your body a steady energy source, which increases your metabolism throughout the day. If you eat five or six small meals a day, your body will burn calories as you go.

4) Cardio

Cardio exercise raises your metabolism, big time. As long as your heart rate is up, you are getting calorie burning benefits that last all day.

5) More Muscle

Muscle burns more calories than fat. The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism gets and the more calories you burn, even at rest! So get lifting, ladies!

Long Distance Love

My high school boyfriend and I vowed to stay together even though we will be attending different colleges. We have even decided that we will see others, too. We feel our relationship can withstand anything. Are we dreaming?

Big time. You will break up; it’s just a matter of time. In the interim, you’ll be miserable and not interested in meeting your classmates while you

pine for your man. And you’ll be jealous as hell when he finds a new girlfriend, who wants him exclusively, and leaves you in the lurch. So break

it off now and enjoy the first year of freedom: single and with no regrets.

Limp Locks

Q: “My hair is super fine and goes limp in the heat. How can I keep it from drooping?”

A: Nothing is worse than your fabulous ‘do falling flat before a night out. Truth is, fine hair suffers when your roots become damp and heavy with excessive sweat and oil produced by an overheated scalp. Prevent deflation by adding body at your scalp with a volumizing root-booster spray. Try V05 Volume! Blast, an instant root-lifter for great volume, $3.50, at drugstores. If the ‘do does deflate and more lift and body are needed, bend over and spray with a light-hold volumizing hairspray. Concentrate the hairspray at the roots because volume stems from the scalp. We suggest Samy Skyscraper volumizing hairspray, $9, at drugstores and supermarkets. Not only will it maximize volume and fullness; it contains UV absorbers to protect color from fading. It’s also humidity-resistant, to keep frizz out and shine in. We like that.

Ask Ryan …

Dear Ryan,

My boyfriend keeps asking me to have anal sex with him. I don’t really mind saying no, but I just don’t understand why he is so into it. What is the male obsession with anal sex? -Thxs, Jennifer

The “obsession,” as you put it, is more of a curiosity and a desire for accomplishment. You have two types of guys: the virgin and the veteran. The guy who has never had anal sex will always experience a nagging curiosity until he’s done it. Along with this curiousity, however, comes a challenge. (Here comes the male ego.) If he overcomes the challenge, he gains a sense of fulfillment and power. The guy who’s done it before enjoys it and wants to do it again &#8217 but with someone new. It&#8217s not necessarily the act he craves, but the feeling of doing something a little raunchy. It’s new and different; nothing wrong with changing it up. But, hey, you never know: You might actually like it!

Hey Ryan,

I am dating this guy and things are going well and we are approaching the point of having sex. However, I want him to get tested for STDs. I’m not sure how to ask him to do this favor for me without offending him. How should I approach him? – KC

Keeping your hormones under control until you get this squared away is very impressive. If he really cares about you, he won’t mind getting tested. Don’t bring up the issue while you’re hooking up or anywhere near the bedroom. That could get very uncomfortable and he may get defensive. Suggest getting tested together, taking the pressure off him. Let him know that you trust him, but you just don’t trust other people. If you’re a priority in his life, getting tested shouldn’t be a difficult request. Plus, if not getting laid won’t send him to the doctor, get rid of him.

Baby Needs a Brand-New Bag

Nothing’s worse then having to fuss with a handbag all night long. Whether it’s on your shoulder or clutched under your arm, you are bound to spill your drink and lose focus on the hot guy you are trying to snag. We have a solution, the C.L.I.C.K bag by Moe Bags &#8217 sort of like a wristlet but a lot more comfortable.

Number of times we have oooh’d and aaah’d over a new line of Moe bags? Too many to count. The best thing about these bags is the name: C.L.I.C.K, derived from the vitals in any girl’s going-out bag: cell phone, lip gloss, I.D., cash and keys.

Number of colors in the spring collection: six.

Our fave? Turquoise.

Number of ex-models it took to design them: just one, Mary Rambin, a lovely southern girl hailing form Texas, who’s career began as a teen runway model in Houston.

Number of times you will look at the bags before you buy one: It might just take one look, or it could be 10. But who’s counting?

Number of times you will kick yourself if you don’t get one: Well, we dont want you to hurt yourself, but …

MOE Bags cost about $130 (they are quality bags!) and are available at www.couturecandy.com

The Pill Truth

We pop that tiny tablet daily, to keep us baby-free. But there are still questions: Does it make us less randy? Does it pack on extra pounds? Will it really clear blemished skin? Will it cause cancer? No need to wonder any longer. Medical Science has finally given us the answers.

Truth: Not feeling so sexy? The pill could be the culprit. Women who take oral contraceptives have higher levels of a protein that subdues testosterone (the hormone that affects sex drive), according to a new study in the American Journal of Sexual Medicine. Trying a different pill or method may help.

Myth: Jeans becoming a bit snug? Don’t blame the pill. A recent review of 44 studies shows no connection between weight gain and oral contraceptives. So don’t let the worry of putting on extra pounds keep you from giving oral contraceptives a try.

Truth: Breakouts getting you down? The pill can help clear your skin. Birth control pills that may improve acne include Desogen, Demulen, Brevicon, Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Ovcon 35, Ortho Novum 7/7/7 and Nelova 1/35. Ask your doctor which brand he or she thinks is best.

Myth: Afraid of an increased cancer risk? Don’t be. According to breastcancer.org, a well-designed study provides solid evidence that birth control pills do NOT increase the risk of breast cancer. This is true even for women who have taken the pill a good portion of their lives as well as those with a family history of breast cancer.
