Guy Gift Giving

My boyfriend and I have been dating for only 2 months and it’s his birthday in a few weeks. Though I really like him, I don’t want to get him a gift that gives off the wrong impression. What gifts give off the wrong signals?

- Amy

This paranoia of the “message” is something we all experience, so don’t sweat it. My suggestion would be to get him something light hearted, maybe even humorous. Pay attention to what he says when you’re out at the mall or walking the streets. He should be giving you clues to what he wants, hopefully nothing that blings. I always recommend discussing the options with a close friend of his that you trust. I don’t know your boyfriend, so in regards to what not to get him, I’d say no jewelry or clothing. Jewelry says “We’re serious” and clothes say, “though we’ve only been dating 2 months, I want you to wear what I pick out.” You can suggest clothing but not as a birthday gift.

I’ve been dating my boyfriend for about 8 months and I’ve met his parents at least a dozen times, but I get the feeling they don’t like me. What should I do?

- Jackie

If you haven’t opened up about yourself or expressed your interest in getting to know his parents, I can see why they may not like you. Assuming that all is cool, and you’re very social around them, it may just take time. Some parents, especially mothers, are hesitant in accepting someone who’s close with their son. Forgive me for making it seem as though your boyfriend is a momma’s boy. If that’s not the case and the feeling of possibly being disliked by his parents really affects you, try and do something nice for them. Find out what type of flowers his mom likes or what sport his father watches. Spontaneous gifts and thoughtful gestures go a long way with the ‘rents. It’s all about the brownie points. If that doesn’t work, they’re just mean people.
