To Him, From You

A bottle of cologne? Nope. You got that for his birthday.

How about Banana Republic boxers? Um, what are you, his mother?

Some kind of gadget? Getting warmer.

Figuring out what to get your guy for Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa can be pretty impossible. You want him to actually like, and ideally love, what you wrap up inside that gift box this year.

Don’t fret. There’s something out there for him; you’ve just got to do a little searching and take our advice.

For the metro sexual or trendsetting guy, check out guyshop.com, which is full of clothing and accessories from the best boutiques on the internet. He’ll be ecstatic with the Spiewak hooded jacket ($62) or the Drone Duffle Bag by Loop ($67).

If you’ve got a classic funny guy, try bustedtees.com so others can laugh along with his silly sense of humor. Who wouldn’t kill for a “Practice Safe Lunch: Use a Condiment” t-shirt? (All shirts $17.99)

If you can front the cash (and if you can find it), get a Nintendo Wii $249.99, www.nintendo.com) for your game boy. Not only is it the hottest console out right now, it’s also girlfriend-friendly and fun. Hopefully he likes to share.

The music buff might like an iTunes gift card. He can download all his favorite songs AND listen to his iPod hooked into a new iPod dock toilet paper dispenser ($74.99, gifts.com). Yes, it’s true; they make these.

The die-hard sports fan who cries only when his team wins the title might like a Fathead life-sized wall graphic of his favorite player $149, www.fathead.com) Or check out StubHub.com for tickets to his favorite event ($214+). Either way, he’ll love you forever.

For Sunday afternoon tailgates or guys’ poker night, get him a subscription to the beer-of-the-month club, and his favorite brews can come to him ($89.95-$335.40, www.amazingbeerclub.com)

Now that you’ve got great ideas for that special guy in your life, all you’ve got to do is sit back and pray that he doesn’t get YOU something awful, like a holiday sweater or Clay Aiken boxed set. Ugh.

Feeling Peaceful

When it comes to thinking “peace,” you probably picture a dove, the Middle East or The GAP’s latest campaign … and maybe even Woodstock.

But how about peace of mind?

Sure, it’s one of the more difficult states to achieve while balancing finals, jobs and boyfriends, not to mention, holiday chaos. But it is possible with the proper amount of balance. Just trying just one of these ideas from psychologist Dr. John H. Sklare can help you achieve that overall “om” feeling:

Physically relax. Breathing slowly and rhythmically can help you to relax muscular and nervous tension, especially if you concentrate on feeling that sense of calm move through your body.

Think peace. If you consciously think about how valuable feeling calm is, you will be able to act on it as well, especially during a stressful day.

Serene mantras. Find a word or phrase that you can repeat throughout the day that makes you feel relaxed. Even the word peace works!

Use your imagination. If you know that studying for chem stresses you out, picture yourself feeling calm. Do this for any situation that tenses you up, and you should feel better when the actual event occurs.

Engage yourself every day. Look in the mirror every morning and tell yourself to remain peaceful, which will help you minimize stress throughout the day, no matter what may happen. Dr. Sklare says this can help you “be more of an active participant in your life and you can literally change the world you live in.” Sounds pretty good.

Just think – the ideas may sound a little granola, but practice does make perfect. Why not practice having some peace in your life?

Merry Christmas!

Gifted Grin

Maybe it’s the cold air. Maybe it’s the Christmas tunes. Or maybe it’s the fact that you know you aren’t getting coal in your stocking (you’ve actually been a good girl this year). Either way, you’re feeling happier than usual. There’s a skip in your step and, for some reason, you can’t help but flash a friendly smile to each person who crosses your path.

You’re in a giving mood. What else can you do to brighten someone else’s day this time of year?

So many simple things:

1. Bring a toy or stuffed animal to your local hospital’s pediatric ward.

2. Pay for someone’s order behind you at the drive-thru.

3. Let someone step in front of you in the grocery line.

4. Buy someone a drink at the bar.

5. Help an older person put their groceries in their car, and then bring their cart back when you’re done.

6. Collect all that change that’s lying on your floor and donate it to your favorite charity.

7. Buy the person behind you at Starbucks a coffee.

8. Open the door for the person behind you.

9. Hold open the elevator for someone, even if they’re far behind.

10. If you see someone who looks sad, ask if they need help.

There’s even an entire website dedicated to random acts of kindness: www.actsofkindness.org. Get some ideas from the site, ask your friends and come up with your own ideas. But don’t just take our advice – flash that killer grin of yours and see how good you feel when you put a smile on someone’s face. The gifts that keep on giving are sometimes the easiest ones to find.
