One Big Fat Reason Not to Diet

yo-yo-diet.jpgI’ll admit it, I’m a compulsive yo-yo dieter. With the ups and downs of college, I don’t think I know a single girl who has remained the same weight all through college. Whether it means gaining the freshman 15 or crash dieting to drop ten pounds for a formal a month away, if you’re anything like me, your weight has been on a roller coaster ride over the past four years.

Although I always knew I was this kind of dieter, my fears were confirmed in a nutrition class last semester when we had to take a test called “what kind of dieter” are you. The title of yo-yo dieter basically means that I try out different diets from time to time, losing weight and then gaining some back. I am sort of a health nut as well and compulsively keep up with new diet, nutrition, and fitness trends.

But, recent research has shown that dieting actually makes you FATTER in the long run.

The study found that people typically lose between 5% and 10% of their weight during the

first six months of a diet. But, up to two-thirds put MORE weight on than they had lost

within five years.

So, basically the people in the study would have been better off if they had never

starting dieting in the first place. Interesting, huh? Maybe it’s time to do away with

bouts of calorie restriction or depriving yourself of foods you desire. And hey, college

is supposed to be fun, and dieting should be the last of your worries. Now if I could

only take my own advice…
