Hey, y’know what’s totes awesome? The fact that in college women outperform men – with GPAs higher in every college major – and we will still get paid exponentially less than men. No matter the position, no matter the field.
How is this possible? How is it the year 2007 and women are still being financially discriminated against solely because we have vaginas? Oh, and forget about it if you have a minority vagina – African American women earn 77 cents to a man’s dollar and Latinas earn an unbelievable 55 cents to a man’s dollar.
According to a new study by the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation, only one year out of college (kinda hits home for us, huh?), women working full time will earn 20% less than their male counterparts. You could be an entry-level engineer or a five-year registered nurse, you will still make less than a man in the exact same position with the exact same level of experience.
And oh hey – shooting for the stars ain’t going to help that monetary breach. Ten years out of college, the pay gap merely increases – women earning 31% less than men in the exact same position.
There has been argument that this can be accredited to the fact that women study areas with lower pay (teaching, health, psychology), but no matter what the field, the statistics remained the same.
One of the worst things about this epidemic is the fact that women seem so content to do nothing about it. Women have the duty and right to demand equal pay. Anything less is pure discrimination. Furthermore, there are plenty of methods of pro-activity that women can take with employers, potential employers, the media, and Congress. One of the best resources is here: Equal Pay Day.

I’m actually doing a project about the wage gap right now for my Women’s Studies class. It’s an activism project, so I put up information about it at our bookstore. From everything I’ve found, the only thing that can help close the gap is education, so I was excited when I saw your article! It is mentioned in every equal rights bill that women should be paid the same as men, but it’s secondary to things like voting, and even holding the same positions as men. I haven’t look into whether or not there is legislature on the topic yet, but I’m going to before the end of the semester. Thanks so much for putting an article like this up! It helps women, and even their husbands or boyfriends, know what’s going on!
