Ladies, Please Wear Clothes that Fit

s4.jpgOkay, let’s set something straight here. Just because your top costs $500 bucks, does NOT mean its flattering. Just because you like wearing leggings does not mean the leggings like you. I would rather see you in a five dollar smock if it would flatter your figure- because my eyes bleed when I am forced to look at all of you pouring out of that $500 Marc Jacobs mini. Yes it may be hot… but honey, NOT ON YOU!

Now don’t get me wrong, I am all about embracing curves, flaunting what you got, wearing a bikini even if you don’t have washboard abs (lord knows I don’t) and that whole bit. But there is a big difference between showing off your figure and wearing clothes that aren’t attractive just because Sienna Miller was rocking the same thing.

Time and time again I see friends, strangers and at times even (gasp!) myself trying to emulate superstars by wearing the same clothes as them. Did I feel cool when I realized Jessica Simpson had the exact same pair (and color!) of sunglasses that I did? You bet. But does that mean I am going wear a metallic colored mini dress tonight like what I saw Hilary Duff in last week? Hellllllll to the no.

I simply don’t have the same body and I realize that I would end up looking more like the disco ball in her latest music video (read: awful AND ridiculous).

Why do people think that they look good just because their top costs $200? Everyone wants to be in on the trends but the key is finding the pieces that work for you and leaving the ones that don’t on the racks.

How do you know what trends look good on you? Here are a few tips to help you look your best.

First, you need to know your body shape. Are you a Pear/Apple/Hourglass Shape? Take a look at this website which defines and discusses what styles best flatter each shape.

Once you know shape, look for pieces that accentuate what you like and cover what you don’t. When you go shopping, take someone who will be brutally honest. It will bode well for you to have someone who won’t sugarcoat the truth.

Lastly, use this as your new mantra: A bigger size does not mean fatter… just more flattering! I know we all want to be as close to a size two as we can possibly squeeze ourselves into (even if it means not breathing) but keep in mind that going up a size in form fitting clothes can actually make you appear smaller. Don’t pay attention to the number on the clothes- if there is pulling or you can’t pinch the fabric away from your skin- go up a size.

If it is gaping and looks more like a muu muu then a dress… it’s too big! It’s possible to flaunt what you got and feel like a rock star (because that is always fun) in a flattering way.

I liked your comments. I have been helping people dress their best for years. When I see clothes are too tights or just hanging on like a tent I think, "what a shame, and she spent so much money on that ditty". I have seen beautifully dressed women in a $60 outfit from JC Penny's and they look terrific because it fits; the fabric is lightly draping over their body and the hem and shoulders are properly placed. It seems ever since fashion went to the very relaxed grunge (and all of the in between) very few people know what "fitting clothes" means. To bad, because it really make or breaks all of those the finished look no matter how casual. Anita http://www.imagetutorme.com
