Grandpa Chic? It’s Back!

Let’s get real.
Suspenders aren’t especially groundbreaking or shocking, and they’re definitely not new, but it seems some of Hollywood’s most fashion forward stars beg to differ.
The trend started way back in late 2005 or early 2006 and looked to be picking up some speed; places like H&M and Forever 21 carried suspender dresses and shorts for us ladies looking to be budget trendsetters. Then, as quickly as it came, the idea seemed to just – drop off.
Don’t worry! Thanks to Lindsay, Fergie, and the like, the look is back and going strong.
Paired with shorts – and the ubiquitous RayBan Wayfarers — the look can be super stylized and (some argue) cool, but matched with ill-fitting jeans or a cardigan and you’ll end up looking a bit…geriatric, which is a risk I’m not willing to take.
If you ask me, the entire idea smacks of irony gone wrong. Just wait ten years and I will bet you suspenders will top your list of things you wish you didn’t wear back in 2007.
Not to mention, wearing suspenders while you’re out on the town is one thing, but suspenders on a lazy summer day with your friends just makes no sense. Never underestimate the power of a well-fitted t-shirt – and leave the elastic to grandpa.
