Who Wears Short Shorts?

July 30, 2007     Posted in Style

mens short shortsIf your supply of Cucumber Melon Nair suspiciously starts going missing, blame your boyfriend. If designers like Prada have their way, men will soon take fashion cues from the runways and start wearing shorts that look like they came out of your closet.

I’m all for personal style and taking fashion risks, but short shorts on men make a fashion statement that, frankly, I don’t want to see. From easter-colored to formal, this new trend of thigh-skimming shorts just looks inappropriate—more suitable for the bedroom than strutting down the street. Besides, how many men do you know that could actually pull off this shorter length with their board-short tan lines and carpet of leg hair?

Fashion forward? Maybe. But looking through Prada’s collection, each short-shorts look more nauseating than the last, I can’t help but think fashion is playing a big joke on us all—-as evidenced by the pairing of formal shorts, sandals, and what suspiciously looks like a pair of slouchy wool socks.

Until I see this fashion nightmare in person, I’ll just hold on to the hope that this eyesore will stay confined to the runway and away from my line of vision.

What's wrong with men wearing short shorts…. I am 150lbs with beautiful biker legs. Why is it ok for a women to show her legs but not for a man? Do agree, that legs should be shaved but other than that nothing wrong…. It is funny how women have been able to gain a complete fashion freedom thru the years, but men have been going backward with very rigid rules. It is time for men to regain their fashion freedom!

i see no problem with shorts that are above the knee. actually, living in a country like australia (or any other warmer clime), i am incredibly grateful that fashion in shorts is now above the knee – i.e. much cooler! and i don't understand why it is appropriate for women to wear shorts that reveal almost everything, but inapproproate for men to wear shorter shorts.

granted, they aren't really amenable to being dressed up as more formal wear, but as for casual, and smart casual in warmer climates, shorts above the knee are fine with me!

I think that men have been scared away from short shorts and its been made politically incorrect for them to wear. But speaking on my behalf I wish men could have as much fashion freedom as women. And I would like, some day, to be able wear short shorts in public.

I am accustomed to wearing shorts that have an inseam of no longer than three inches. Where I grew up that was the norm. So were mens bikini bathing suits. I have also grown accustomed to seeing women in shorts/bathing suits that do not shave their legs. So, I really don't understand what you folks are so hung up on. BTW, I have never shaved my super hairy legs! Also, I grew up in the really south part of Miami.

when I was younger mens/boys shorts had inseams form 5 to 6 inches and pants that went to the knee were called capis and reserved for women, today mens shorts are knee lenght baggy "capris" and in my opinion to long and to hot in the summer this year I am cutting of my old jeans to about 5 or so inches maby less.

Back in the seventies there were a few males, like myself, who wore bum high, crotch high cutoff shorts just like women were wearing. I think it was a logical reaction to feminism as well as part of the anti war movement, and an attempt to say that men should have the same social freedoms that women have. Unfortunately most women, despite their vaunted beliefs in equality, were quite offended by beauty boys showing off their thighs in public, be it in hot pants or flowery speedoes, so now, despite all the equal rights talk over the past forty years, men are back to being straight-jacketed into a rigid sex role–below the knee shorts, below the knee swimming suits, and any male who tries to violate that role is subjected to derision, gay bashing, sexist bullying, and sometimes even arrest from the police state. Perhaps the right wing needed to reprogram young males to a more rigid sex role so that they would be more willing to fight imminent wars. Hip hop has served the police state quite well. Once again men are stupidly doing the bulk of dying in war, only this time there is no anti war movement–no feminists saying, "Hey, look at what monsters men have become.".

I am from the 60's & 70's era and I like shorts that are 3" to 3 1/2" inseam. What they are wearing today (men & boys) are just long pants that are to short. The reason most people wear shorts is to stay cooler. The more skin out ,the cooler you stay.Good rule of thumb "let your arms hang down straight and at the end of the fingers cut the shorts)In most cases it will be 3' to 4' inseam.

First,a 3" or longer is NOT a short short. It is dumb & stupid that men are told by the "fashion police" and others that they have to wear those baggy, sloppy looking oversize cargo shorts. I live in Florida so during the tropical summer so called "short shorts" are the only way to be comfy outdoors. If it bothers you stop staring !

I'm sick of those cargo baggies. They're vile to use on the playing field and ghastly when swimming- flapping about. Short shorts are not only inherently logical but much pleasanter in use. However the fashion industry regards male thighs a as a faux pas- very wrong thankyou v much. This doesn't apply to female fashion. The predominant view is extraordinarily sexist and time that people lightened up. If it's an issue of sex appeal then short shorts can also be sexy on men too; it's just about application and overcoming prejudice and narrow mindedness.

I agree. When I was a kid/adolescent in the 80's, men and women both wore shorts that were 3-4 inch inseams. It could be a "carry-over" from the 70's or what not, but I CLEARLY remember those shorts on guys ALL OVER THE PLACE! Not just on guys that had a nice body, no, guys with beer guts, thin guys, etc. I agree that shorts with a 3" inseam or longer are NOT short-shorts, they are just shorts, so QUIT CALLING THEM SHORT-SHORTS!!! To me short-shorts are the "hot pants" style that have about a 1" inseam or less! Look at most women's shorts, they have about a 3-4 inch inseam. Quite a few of those women would argue that they're just shorts, not short-shorts.

I'm a 23 year old straight male. I love wearing short shorts (2" or less inseam). I have a bubble butt and tanned, smooth, and muscular legs, which I love showing off. I get compliments all the time from men and women. I have a girlfriend and she likes grabbing my butt when I wear these shorts. They're also very practical for running and other physical activities.

I don't consider shorts that are 2" or longer to be "short shorts". They're just shorts. I think if a guy looks good, he should wear shorts that are truly shorts, not some baggy short cargo pants.

Does anyone know where to buy these Prada (or other good quality) shorts? I would like to get some. Because if we don't support the trend by pulling out our wallets, it will probably go away.

I still remember the 80's fondly, when all of the hot guys were wearing 2" cotton Adidas shorts!

I had just bought a pair of "dressy" shorts, actually 4" inseam, I wore them once and folks stared at me, or maybe it was me feeling like they were, I am not sure, but I did feel awkward. I keep my legs shaved, I think the shorts look better on hairless legs. But living in upstate NY I guess is not the place to wear them…back to the fugly baggy long ones. I really think short down to knees are really not shorts mid thigh are what I call shorts.

I'm a straight guy who remembers the eighties. I'm not sure I want to wear 2" inseam tight shorts in public, but I am looking for shorter — 5-6" inseam — shorts because I'm sick and tired of the "little boy-baggy-down-to-your-calves" look which is propagated by are increasingly obese population who like to hide underneath the "baggy look." Yo, I'm not down with urban chique no mo', you feel me?"

I'm short, slender, and though not a stud by any means, somewhat athletic. I'm moving towards clothes with more fit because I look better in them, and I'm proud of the fact that at 40+ I still sport a waist — a rarity nowadays.

Besides shorts, I think men's swim suits, the board shorts, are way too long. I don't want to drag so much fabric when I swim, nor do I want to cover so much skin when the point is to be in the sun. I'm not a knarly surfer or rad skateboarder and don't want to dress like one.

I wear shorts as much as possible, only problem is I do not have a job wear I can wear shorts. If I had my way, it would be a law for men to be in shorts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.

It's so bizarre when people say non-baggy shorts look gay. Do you think straight guys design fashions? Who do you think decreed back in the 90s that from now on only calf-length, super-baggy anti-shorts would be the style?

Seems to me young women who think bloomers on men are sexy have been spending way too much time reading fashion mags and not near enough time looking at real men.

Thigh-length shorts and swimming trunks for men aren't just a 70s or 80s thing. From the 1920s on, men's shorts were just… shorts. Practical, comfortable, and (incidentally) sexy. Look at Sean Connery's James Bond, Jack Kennedy, Cary Grant. Look at prize fighters and basketball players anytime before 1990. Men shaved their faces, not their legs.

In the 90's, mostly gay fashion designers, desperate for something outrageous for their Paris collections, latched onto the street gang look and pushed it to absurd(er) lengths. Buyers for chain stores stocked up on baggy shorts (and also those ridiculous pleated trousers) as a planned-obsolescence gimmick, forcing everyone to empty their closets and buy new stuff. Suddenly there was nothing else available but baggy, pleated, synthetic, logo-ed, overpriced clown pants.

Now Americans are convinced there's something vulgar about men showing their knees!

Americans, you've been had. Sure, gross hairy men don't look good in shorts. They don't look good in anything. But why should average men have to cover themselves up in nylon tents to avoid offending girls in string bikinis?

people are only jealous. short shorts rock on the right body type. trouble is those that sit around and complain about things like this all the time are the fat asses that know they'd look awful in anything revealing. plus i think discretion should be used. for instance, you don't want to see an overly hairy guy in short shorts or a really fat chick in a mini skirt. so if you got it, flaunt it. otherwise, all you boring middle-class cattle, stick to your daily uniforms of cargo shorts and polo's and leave the fabulous clothes to all of us who have the right to show off :-D

I don't wait for fashion to change. I run outside regularly in ample, 1" inseam running shorts and I pull them up as high as decency allows. That is how I make sure that my stride isn't hindered by the shorts, which don't touch my thighs at all. It makes running efficient and keeps me cool, but I also dress like that because it feels sexy. I channel that energy into running and keeping in shape. I pity those who don't experience that simple pleasure.

I've noticed recently just how much disrespect I've been getting from Generation Y (30 and under) lately when wearing shorts with a 3-4" inseam. They pull out their camera phones, snap my picture, then I see them texting after that.

I even had this totally disrespectful teenager going on and on and on about my shorts like I was naked or something! I mean these kids REALLY need their faces slapped, because when I was a teenager in the late 80's/early 90's, if we did that to our elders, WOW would we get it from them! A good smack in the jaw usually!

Stupid laws now won't let you slap a kids face without getting jail time, or community service, but GOD we've let these brats get away practically with murder! Not sure how to handle it, do I scream and yell at these brats, ignore it, or what? I've already seen one picture of me on an online blog, and I just can't believe how disrespectful these punk brats are!

To Jim… I go wear "short" shorts (4" or 3" inseam) quite often, and I am often looked at a bit oddly. However, if a kid (or anyone) wants to snap a picture and put it on a blog and poke fun of me, I say — go for it — because I like how I look and I am quite comfortable with the extra publicity, lol. Many women and men have told me I have nice legs, so I don't really care if some thoughtless kid thinks it's funny. :p

I used to just wear them around the house but I find myself starting to venture out. If more guys just starting wearing them, public opinion will change.

It’s been like this for a long time. Girls with skimpy bikinis and guys with big baggy pants that get passed off as shorts or swimwear by the sheep that run the department stores. I can’t believe where men’s fashions on shorts and swimwear are today. What’s next, how much longer are they going to ram this stupid covering up thing. From reading the blogs about this I certainly feel the trend is changing a bit. I am starting to see more super short running short being advertized on the web. Incedentally, I own about 6 pair of what I call my mini-shorts, there actually running shorts from 1″ to 2″ inseam. Now for regular shorts it’s even worse. It is impossible to find men’s shorts with a 3″ or 4″ inseam. I don’t really like to cutoff jeans because the hem gets wrecked.

There are four types of shorts that men can wear.

Above the knee length (+/-10" inseam), called Bermuda; When cut as in dress pants, can be worn anywhere, even combined with a summer blazer. Bermuda, as its namesake, use to be part of a formal attire, worn with a safari jacket. Best source: Rag and Bone, Odine Shops in New York,

Between Bermuda's length and a man's crotch (+/- 5" inseam), called Jamaican; Suitable only for sporting activity (sailing, rowing, etc.). They are meant to be worn with sport shoes, t-shirt and casual sweater or hoodie. Best source: Patagonia

Between Jamaica's length and Bermuda's length (+/- 7.5" inseam), called Boy Scout or Hiking Shorts. When they are cut as dress pants, they can be dress up like Bermuda. When they are cut as in sport pants they should be worn with either t-shirt or polo shirt. Footwear? Whatever the occasion calls. Best source: Rag and Bone, Bastian, Reed, Fred Perry

Between Jamaican's length and the crotch (+/- 2.5"), called Tennis. It's meant for, what else, playing tennis! Super Dandy men still can pull this off outside the tennis court as long as water is visible. Or when running a Marathon. Best source: Your closest sporting gear stores.

Anything shorter than the above should be considered as bathing suit…….

As a guy that stays in shape, I wear pretty much any kind of shorts that I feel like wearing without worrying about what others might think.

It's called being free to be myself, happy with my own choices, not living my life according to the wishes of others.

I keep my legs shaved because I simply like it and the way it looks.

People can look at me oddly, make any comments they wish and it won't ever change the fact that I'm comfortable enough with myself to wear what I want.

Whether that's wearing running short shorts, capri length more formal shorts (can't stand the baggies), spandex short shorts, to me I have a body that looks good in just about anything, any color. You might think just the opposite and that's cool, but you know what, it doesn't matter.

I think instead of looking for the industry to make a change, everyone should just wear what they like.

    Who cares what society thinks.

I have great legs and will not bow to any stupid kids wishes that I not wear my short shorts. Funny how kids want attention these days when they snap photos and text message. F*ck 'em…snap away, and text till your thumbs fall off. I hear comments every now and then to, ironically though, it's comments made by the fat and ugly kids who have to act like this because they themselves are shunned and/or picked on by school mates.

So, in effect these stupid outcasts need an avenue to vent (find anything wrong with someone else, so that they can gain popularity).

Normally, the ones making comments are the ones who are psychologically limited and require their peers (in the same mindset) for support.

I keep the stupid kids on their toes…

One day, when they are alone I wear my short shorts. When I see a group together I wear my cargos. Then at other times, I wear my mediocre shorts (mid thigh). I keep them guessing all the time.

Let them do as they please, as you are doing as you please. If they don't like it, what are they going to do about it???…NOT A DAMN THING!

Next time a comment is made, bend over and show them your crack, and pat your ass, as you are telling them to KISS IT!

Yes finally, It’s about time that the trend has started to change. I am actually relieved.

It’s so difficult to find a decent pair of nice men’s shorts. When will this rapper trend, along with this surf board trend. Is is absolutely laughable to see ads showing girls with skimpy bikinis and then the guys wearing big baggy pants to the beach or pool. it’s so laughable. What is it with these mens styles that cover up the thighs. It’s like, have been so buttoned down. I’m a guy, heterosexual, and I also like to show off my legs, athletic legs, I wear shorts at every opportunity, where it fits the occasion. I wear short with a 2-3″ inseam, exposing my thighs and sometimes reveal a bit of my ass. And the ladies get a kick out of it and I like it.

There is no sense of fashion in men’s shorts choises. Women have far more of a greater choise and freedom. I’m so happy to see the trend in the big baggy look starting to END for heaven’s sake. It’s as if it was taboo for a guy to show his thighs. What a shame. Well just today I went out in very short shorts. I’m active and have athletic legs.

I think society is jaded when everyone thinks they have wear long pants, albeit in hot weather even, cover themselves up in order to conform to some mass societal norm.

You have the girls being quite cute in their mini shorts and I enjoy those on women too. I’m happy to see for men that it is quite acceptable for one to show their legs, when they posses fine form. Women have a lot more freedom to do so. And it is among the most attractive part of the anatomy.

I prefer wearing womens shorts. As you know it’s still difficult to find proper men’s shorts in the stores nowadays. They always make them too long. For my athletic legs I like the womens shorts as they provide more room in the upper thighs. Sometimes you get lucky and find ones that do have enough room in the crotch. You have to look for the ones with the longer zipper. The hip hugger kind.

Let’s finally put an end to the laughable shorts styles for men that have plagued us since the 90′s. It’s about time we see and end to those big, ugly, long and baggy garbage.

Right now, I see much greater choises for lengths and styles in the womens shorts departments.

Short shorts for guys are not only a good choice in their own right, but they are inherently a right choice for any guy who is in fairly fit condition. The arms and legs were always meant to be free on both girls and guys alike. Short shorts for guys must be styled specifically for guys with respect to their frontal development, so that they're not too form-fitting frontally. Otherwise, along as our butts are completely enclosed by the garment, the shorter the shorts so much the better. Shorts that are perfectly short will be as short as possible while completely enclosing the pelvic area and smoothing over our frontal genitalia. I will enthusiastically welcome the trend toward the social acceptance of short — even very short — shorts for guys. Wearing the speedo-type swimsuit, both in the vicinity of swimming pools and at the seashore, will help accelerate this trend. As it is, I wear only speedo-type swimsuits.
