I am going to be a freshman in college next year and me and my boyfriend of two years are trying to make it work. i love him with all my heart, and when trying to find something to do for him on valentine's i come across this load of shit. I am issed and almost hurt by the fact that someone could say something like this, in fact i truly feel sorry for you. maybe you need a special someone or were hurt in the past but spilling out your anger and bitterness on the rest of the world is completely uncalled for. I plan on having an amazing night skyping my boyfriend watching him open up his care package and talking about how amazing the last two year, eight months and four days of our life has been. and praying for people like you who contribute to the hurt and shallow-mess of this society. I hope you find peace one day, and in a few weeks i will celebrate mine. This is sad and quite upsetting!

Wow this article is literally so ignorant. I don't even know where to begin with for WRONG you are. Obviously your bitter, whored around during your freshman year, or are just plain stupid.
I'm a freshman and have been with my boyfriend for over a year and what your saying is plain ridiculous. I love him with all my heart but just that doesn't mean i will sacrifice my future career. He lives an hour and a half away and we make it a point to see each other every weekend. You can still study, go out, and have fun.
If two people love each other it will work... i don't know if your trying to make people feel bad about their long distance relationships and if you are thats just wrong
look for that "hot older guy" ? your literally sound like a plain slut who's obviously never been in love...
and for everyone who is in a long distance relationship thats working keep it that way and if its mean to be it will be.

I was browsing the internet for LDR advice, because I just spent the last hour crying over my situation. Instead of helpful advice, I read this article. I am not one to be offended by written work, but this article truly angered and offended me. It seems to me like you haven't even experienced a long distance relationship, or if you did, you were hurt by it, using your writing to vent. My reasoning for choosing a different school was simply because I didn't like the school my boyfriend is attending. You suggest that students should choose the school their signifigant other is attending, just because they are a couple? That is the absolute worst reason to choose a college. I don't think you should be allowed to write articles about situations that you have no idea about. Obviously, you don't have a clue about choosing colleges, relationships in general and long distance relationships.

I wouldn't agree that "if you were that much in love, you would move". Why should I give up a better university to put me in a better position for my career, and why should he do the same? Careers and love are not mutually exclusive, especially in this day and age - an age where we are diving headfirst into globalization and technology. Don't make it sound as if a woman who is in love should just give up her high heels and get back in the kitchen, ready to follow her man at a moment's notice. You can still go out and get sloshed and silly with your girlfriends and have fun - again, that isn't mutually exclusive with having a relationship. It's all about trust and frankly, being honest. My boyfriend doesn't whine and cry when I want to go out and have a drink because he deals with it, just like I deal with him *gasp* being around other people! God forbid people be social.

Painting adolescents with extreme stereotypes and choices just gives more and more growing children the impression that those are the only labels that can define us. Life is beautiful, full of color and wonder and growth, and college will show you the best and the worst of life. It has punches, though - roll with them and clink your glasses.

haha damn! most of these comments were so hateful. andrew i think your article rocked. i especially liked that you said at least you are eliciting some sort of response. way to stay postive! haha
i would ignore all the girls who got all defensive.
going into my freshmen year of college i moved six hours away from home and cut off my 2 year high school relationship and i don't regret it at all - freshmen year was full of lots of new experiences and crazy times and being tied down to a ldr would have definitely made me miss out on all that. and now sophomore year i have been able to learn what im really looking for in a relationship - you made me laugh when you said we will get tired of going home with the best lookin drunkie at last call haha! ya hit the nail on the head! i've done that and now i found someone i care about this summer but he's going to school 10 hours away. we've been sort of having a long distance open relationship but i think we realize how much we want to be together so i'm looking to transfer schools. because like you said if you really care that much about someone you would learn to be geographically close too.
sorry for the long post but i just really wanted to say i totally related and agreed with this article even though i am a girl and am in a semi ldr situation.
so keep up the good work andrew!!! seriously great great article.
