Thank What Yo Momma Gave Ya
May 3, 2008 Posted in Cool Stuff
Um. Why didn’t anyone tell me Mother’s Day was right around the corner? I thought I had at least a month to find something cute, thoughtful and cheap for my mom. Now I find out I have a few short days. Days. Uh oh?
Flowers used to be enough for Mama’s Day, but giving her something that will most definitely die (and cause her the pain of having to clean yet another vase) just isn’t right. My mother is the most generous and caring person around, so she deserves the best. She washed my laundry every time I came home from school to visit…even that going-out shirt I puked on the night before. She picks me up toilet paper at Costco when I am on my last roll and am this close to using newspaper. She sends me home with enough food for a month every time I stop by her house. And then she offers to come over and help me cook it.
I’m pretty sure your moms are the same.
Even though they may call too early on a Saturday morning, or say some ridiculous things via email, our moms really do deserve major appreciation. And if we can’t give it to them every other day of the year, then it is our duty to make Mother’s Day special. So, even though we are down to the wire on time, here are a few unique and special gift ideas for yo momma:
Spoil Her: Moms don’t spend nearly enough times on themselves, so give her some “me” time worth taking with some Bliss Spa Products. This stuff is luxurious and smells amazing. They have everything from anti-aging to anti-cellulite (though, we do not recommend the latter as it may offend more than flatter).
Relax Her: Nothing says “I appreciate you” like a massage. And since you are away at school and your mom most certainly misses you (hence the hourly calls/emails…), why not make it a mother/daughter massage package? Most spas offer it – especially this time of year – and it will definitely be a day your mom will remember and brag about to her friends.
Enlighten Her: One of my favorite gifts to give (and receive) is a pile of books. I love seeing the books others enjoy, and sharing some of my own favorites. Head to the bookstore and pick up a few of your favorites and share them with mom. It will allow her to connect with you on a new level and give you something to talk about over brunch.
Teach Her: Whether it be computer lessons, golf lessons, or those gourmet cooking classes she’s been talking about taking for years, sign her up. Moms always come up with a million reasons not to take the time, so give it to her.
Honor Her: Your mother’s favorite saying has always been, “It is better to give than to receive,” so show her you’ve been listening. Make a donation on her behalf to her charity of choice. You can sponsor a polar bear, feed a child, help rebuild a home in New Orleans…the charity options are endless, and the world will thank her.

My boyfriends birthday is the same day as mothers day this year. It's his first birthday that we've been together for and I'm having a hard enough time coming up with the money for a present for him, let alone getting something for my mom. This has been the most stressful month with finals, finances, and gift giving ideas. Ugh! when will it all be over!?
