CC Reviews Prince Caspian, I’m Not There, and Speed Racer
May 17, 2008 Posted in Buzz
The CollegeCandy Movie Review showcases three newly released Movies and/or DVDs—one for each of our three classifications:
“Best Date Movie”— A great date movie shouldn’t be too much of any one thing. (unless of course you and your date already know of a mutual interest in a certain genre, in which case this classification isn’t really for you). Rest assured that a movie with this classification will not be embarrassingly sexual, overly gory, stupidly juvenile, etc.
“If You Must…”—Most of us have obsessions with something movie-related—movies that we “Must” see. Categories include, marvel comics’, action, eye candy, zombie, horror, chick-flicks, Muppets (my vice), Disney, samurai, Will Farrell, Jack Black, etc.
A movie with an “If You Must…” classification will give you an idea of how much you will suffer (through bad acting, terrible soundtrack, etc) by giving into this “need”.
“Best Movie Ever! Go Watch/Rent It NOW!”— It’s the movie that you want to see over and over, the one you recommend to everyone you know, and can’t wait to get on DVD.
Best Date Movie (predicted)
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (May 16, 2008)
Okay so I know what you’re thinking and before you totally write me off hear me out!
Chances are you or your date read the Chronicles of Narnia or some similar story when you were little. → Great conversation topic starter
The movie is about a Prince seeking to regain his lost kingdom and in the process learning how to be a true king. –> Sappy-sounding perhaps but also very sweet in its simplicity and as such a nice mellow note to end/ start the evening on.
It’s got a talking mouse named Reepicheep voiced by the one and only Eddie Izzard!!!
Like its’ predecessor, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian combines actors and CGI to create the fantastical world of Narnia—a place where animals talk, tree spirits and water nymphs come out to play, and adventure lurks just around the bend. One year after their adventure in the wardrobe, the British siblings Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie are on their way back to school when they find themselves magically transported back to Narnia. They find that in Narnia its actually been 1300 years since their departure and the land has fallen under the hand of evil King Miraz. The four children join the fight to overthrow his forces and install the lands’ rightful young heir–Prince Caspian.
If You Must…
Speed Racer (May 9, 2008)
The Wachowski brothers bring their Matrix magic to the adaptation of Tatsuo Yoshida’s classic anime TV show. Speed Racer, Emile Hirsch, uncovers an elaborate scam to fix races and corrupt the sport he loves. In an effort to reverse the tide Speed Racer decides to compete in the same race that claimed the life of his beloved older brother.
Cheesy? Yes. Overly simplistic? Perhaps. But it’s debatable whether it deserves the horrible reception it seems to have received.
Best Movie Ever! Go Rent It NOW!
New DVD Release: “I’m Not There”
An amazing experience of acting and cinematography, this movie is a perfect accompaniment to all of your end-of-semester “Big Picture” contemplations (What is Life? What will I do after all of this? Should I become a nun? etc.)
Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Leger and Ben Whishaw all portray Bob Dylan—yet no one in the movie is actually named Bob Dylan.
The six different actors portray six different sides of Dylan—from a young runaway kid to a young folksinger, a strung-out celebrity to a young rebel, and from a frustrated divorce to an old cowboy.
It’s a brilliant exploration of a soul fragmented by artistic purity, head-turning popularity, and human fragility. In an age of celebrity meltdowns and every-expanding opportunities to give in to the temptation of pseudo-identities (i.e. Second Life), this movie is a must-see.
