Top 5 Reasons Why I Am Giving Up Makeup

marie_claire.jpgI have a love/hate relationship with makeup.

On the one hand, I go into a drugstore and guaranteed I’m making a beeline for the makeup section. I can’t resist! The bright colors, the sparkle, the textures–man, just try and keep me away.

But once I put it on, it’s always kind of a let-down. No matter how perfect the application, it always looks…well, kind of fake.

So I’ve said it before, but this time I mean it: I am giving up makeup. And it will be glorious.

Here’s why:

(5) It’s bad for your skin.

You know it, I know it. The more crap you put on your face, the more likely you are to break out, and then the more makeup you need. Fact of life. I mean, that’s how they sell the stuff, right?

(4) Guys don’t wear it.

What the flip? Why are we covering ourselves in powders and paints when the boiz iz goop free? Foroget that!

(3) I’m tired of getting carded.

Look, I’m pushing 24. I really should not be getting carded at this point. Especially, I mean, I don’t smoke but I’ve had to buy cigarettes as props for plays (really!) and gotten carded. Do I look frickin’ 18?! I think make-up is largely at fault. Who wears a lot of makeup? Teenagers. Let’s stop freezing ourselves at 19, ladies! Off with the blush!

(2) It’s the summer.

And I HATE sweating with makeup on. Liquid eyeliner gets in your eyes and stings like a b*tch. Bronzer melts down your cheek like you’re a burn victim. Not a pretty sight. So what the frick is the point?!

(1) Hey, I look better without it!

Ultimately, I think most people do.

So f*ck off, makeup! I’m showin’ some skin!

Do stick with a sunscreened moisturizer!!!

I used a tinted one from Benefit, called YouRebel. Its really light and just evens me out a tiny bit, just what I need for summer alos with keeping my skin smooth. It also has spf 15, which ALL of us should be wearing every day! *cough cough*.

I cant give up blush though, mine is a natural pale pink, Dandelion, also from Benefit. I just look bland without a little.

I totally agree with you thinking alot of people wear too much makeup though, its ironic that we use it the most when we are at our most youthful.

I wear makeup only to even out my skintone and to make it so my eyes don't look naked. With blonde eyelashes my eyes look weird with blonde eyelashes. I can't just not wear makeup, mostly because my skin is so many different colors and I have so many acne scars. It's a comfort to me when I can make my skin look nearly flawless, compared to what it really is.

I was never big on make-up when i was little cause like you said it always looked fake to me (on me). But i've recently in the past 4 years started wearing more. But I only wear a sheer poweder to even me out, a tiny bit of blush to give me color, a dab of bronzer on my nose and mascara and eyeliner on my lower rim. besides the eyeliner (which makes me look more awake since i'm always dead tired) it all looks completely natural (people always tell me they love the fact that i'm so pretty without wearing any makeup, little do they know). But I have no problem going bare, infact when i go bare i get hit on much more often. That may be why i wear makeup in the first place lol.

You get carded everywhere you go if you're under 40 years old for cigarettes. It doesn't have to do with looking a certain age with or without makeup, they're going to card you regardless.

i love how you complain about getting carded, and in like 20 yrs you will complain about not getting carded anymore, so don't take it for granted. and i'm glad that you're getting carded, because it shows that stores are actually trying to abide by the law and not sell to minors.

Sarah, I applaud you for going makeup free.

    If I did that…well, let's just say it wouldn't be very pretty…

Your first problem – going to the drug store. That stuff is rather junky in my opinion. I'm a sephora girl myself. I always wear makeup but people are always shocked when I tell them I am wearing it. Its all about creating that just noticeable difference. When you pick the right products applied in just the right way, everyone thinks you look great but no thinks you are wearing makeup. I used to have a problem with wearing it (how shallow!) but I found that people actually treat me differently when I have it on. Its lame I know but sadly the way the world works!

Makeup is not to hide or mask, but to accentuate. Tell me your eyes don't look better with a bit of mascara on or your lips with a little chapstick or gloss. Cover-up is to even out skin tones and blush is to add that natural red to your cheeks that should be there and is thought to be beautiful.

I personally just wear a little eye liner, mascara, and chapstick. Maybe some cover up under my eyes when I'm tired or something.

Always remember this line, people should be able to tell when you're wearing makeup, but not be able to tell when you're not…does that make any sense?

Tell us what you're thinking...
