With the economy in a serious downturn (thanks to the Wall Street Hangover, apparently), smart college women like ourselves know better than to hit the malls and stock up on the latest fashion. We have to save! We have to buy gas! We have to invest in our futures!
But, there are just some things out there that are worth a little splurge. Sure, you may not be able to buy corn products next week, but who cares? You have yourself one of these babies:
1. An iPod.
I’m sure half of you already have iPods, but I’m also sure there are a few of you out there who are like me… unwilling to fork over the dough because you’re cheap and/or poor. Well, let me tell you, investing in an iPod is the way to go. After forking over the dough for something REALLY huge (a new computer), I got a free iPod touch, and wow. Just wow. The future is here. I can’t even fathom getting to access the Internet for free on a device that also plays music and lets me take notes, get the weather, and watch movies… it’s so awesome.
2. A new computer.
After eight years (serious) of lugging around an outdated Mac laptop, I took a deep breath and hit the “purchase” button last week for a new MacBook Pro. My old computer was still working… it was like a tortoise in terms of speed, though, and it wasn’t really capable of streaming video. Oh, yeah, and the total hard drive capacity was 9 GB. My new computer, I am already convinced, is the best investment I’ve ever made. I can Skype! I can load Web pages in under the amount of time it takes me to make a sandwich! I can listen to podcasts! With my old Mac, podcasts were something strange and exotic that I had heard about but never experienced. If you too are toiling away on an ancient computer, GET A NEW ONE! It is sooooo worth it!
3. A really nice, romantic dinner.
If you have a sugar sugar, treat that person to dinner at an unbearably fancy restaurant. If you’re rocking the single life, get your friends to go out for an amazing dinner with you. It can be painful to look at the tab after you’ve gone all out with appetizers, drinks, main course, and dessert—but if you go to a super-nice place, you’ll later remember how much fun it was rather than how much it cost.
4. An excellent haircut.
For poor college and grad school ladies, the temptation to trim the locks at Master Cuts (or, even classier, over your bathroom sink) is strong—believe me, I feel you. But if you haven’t indulged in a while by having your hair cut and styled (!!!) at a place that’s a little more upscale than your bathtub, you really should treat yourself and go for it. Unless your friend with the scissors is a professional stylist, the difference is unbelievable, and you’ll get the kind of cut that you want to stare at and play with in the mirror for hours.
5. Organics!
I am talking organic clothes and other products as well as food here. Not only are they high-quality, but they’re good for the Earth and good for YOU! You don’t want to chow down on pesticides every time you take a bite of an apple, so spring for the organics. In many places, they’re equally priced or just a little more expensive than the non-organics, and your body will thank you for eating and wearing such lovely things.

Gotta agree about the new computer thing- I recently bought a new laptop, and although it killed me to spend the money, I realized how much time I spent using it every day!

Splurge on a good esthetician, don’t save.
The one time I tried saving, and off she waxed my entire eyebrow.

MacBook is a fashion item like any other piece of clothing, you just pay for the name and the looks and that you can show it to friends.
You could have bought any other laptop and done everything you want to do for half price.

I disagree with Engineer, the Macbook’s more than just a fashion, it’s a great problem free product. I’m a happy owner of one and I’ve had practically no problems with it… a far cry from people I know who have skimped on laptops.

Engineer, Macs are not just for fashion and show. You don’t have to buy anti-virus software for them, you don’t have to worry about spyware, you don’t have to figure out how much memory you’re going to need to run a huge, buggy operating system… seriously, what’s not to love. I’ve had an HP laptop for years, when I finally decided to make the switch, it blew my mind away! I could care less that it’s pretty, and I don’t go around to my friends and say ‘hey look how much better my computer is than yours.’ What I do love about it is that my computer starts up quickly, I don’t have to wait for it to scan for viruses every day, and it’s amazingly fast with only 1 GB of RAM.
Engineer says:
Tue, 29th Jul 20083:25 pm
Yes, my bother has one of those cant stop promoting it.
Mind you, the viruses will come in time
But you cant play games with a mac so there you go(a fact that you people appreciate alot, I think)

Love my Macbook, but totally agree about the iPod/mp3 player. I work 40 hours/week this summer, and I listen to books on CD and podcasts all day long. Saves me from sooo much boredom.

I don’t care what anyone says – I spent tons of money on every other kind of mp3 player and every other kind of laptop – and after ALL THE OTHERS broke or stopped working in one way or another – I finally spent the money on Mac products & they have worked flawlessly. If I would’ve just shelled out the extra cash to begin with I would have spent a lot less money in the long run.

You’ve been found out, Engineer! You are a silly little gamer who wants to rag on a good product because you haven’t taken the time to learn about it. Have you been to a gaming store lately? Do you have eyes? There are just as many games out there for Macs as there are for PC’s. And if you’re talking about graphics capability or processing speed, it still doesn’t matter, like someone said up there, Macs run really smooth and fast. Give up already, you’re making yourself look dumb.
Christine says:
Tue, 29th Jul 20087:44 pm
Actually, based on Amazon there are 14,917 games for PCs and only 2,378 for Macs. So, there are more games for PCs than there are for Macs based on Amazon. (Also note that I didn’t go through every single page so there could be things on there that aren’t PC games/Mac games)
Not to mention that sometimes in order to get a Mac version of a game, you have to wait 6 months to a year after the PC version is released. Some are being released at the same time (like Spore!) though. The speed at which Mac games are being released has sped up, which is a plus for Mac users.
When it comes down to it, it’s all about preference. Both Macs and PCs have their benefits. If you want a pretty device that gets the job done, go Mac. If you want a beast of a machine that pwns in the gaming department, you would probably go Alienware.

I own a Dell laptop and desktop and I’ve used a PowerMac G5 for two years to produce yearbooks. I really don’t see what the huge deal with Macs are.
I’ve never had to buy anti-virus software or worry about my 512 MB of RAM running everything smoothly. I rarely scan for spyware and this baby has been going for 6 years now with little to no problems.
If you want the full “my computer sucks because I’m a poor user” experience, try not turning on your Windows provided firewall and go download some “free” file sharing software. Then in the midst of everything breaking just go ahead and forget that there is a help file and an internet full of millions of users who have likely already experienced your bug and solved it.
And if you don’t believe that Macs are infallible go ahead and look for the Apple Support Forums — full of ignorant people or those who simply own broken iThings.

Actually, Christine and Engineer…..
I run both windows and leopard on my macbook pro… which means i get to play whichever game i want. (not that I ever need to, Warcraft runs on Mac just fine thank you.)
… and I also would never go back to a PC.

The iPod is the greatest thing to ever happen to my life. With an auxiliary jack in my car I never have to worry about having to have a hundred different CDs in there to fit my mood. Sometimes on a roadtrip you just want to rock out to “MmmBop”…ya know?
Christine says:
Tue, 29th Jul 200810:27 pm
Well yes, if you use the Windows OS on a Mac then you can play whatever you want. But that’s not what the other person meant. For Macs and the Mac OS, there are fewer games than for a regular PC.
I’ve heard of a lot of people who get Macs and then use the Windows OS or Linux. Probably a good idea for gamers that are interested in Macs.
And OMG MmmBop! I just listened to that the other day and remembered how ridiculously wonderful that song is. Now it’s stuck in my head. Damn.

Sure you can play with a mac, if you are ready to comprimise. Same problem with a laptop, even if you pay for the top model it still is a year behind what you could by as a tabletop. Plus you can choose your own parts and assemble the whole thing yourself so you get exactly what you want. You just cant say no to liquid cooling.

Go organic food!
(I say this because I just started working in an organic foodstore, and man, their food tastes much better than other normal foodstores. Chocolate + Beetroot + Cranberry + Cake = SO GOOD)

OMG you guys, I looovvvve “MMMBop” and Hanson. I went to see them in concert last fall and they were INCREDIBLE! Soooo amazing.
And Mac/PC… it’s a personal choice, but in my experience, the problems I have had with PCs number in the dozen times more than the number of problems I have had with Macs. Also, I simply do not like the user interface or controls of a PC, and it’s really hard to slam someone for that since it’s honestly just a matter of preference. I like what I like. You can tell me all day that I shelled out months of pay for a beautiful piece of mechanical junk, but the replies to this post have echoed my sentiment that the quality is there in a big way.

I have both a MAC and a PC and I totally hate to wait for 5 minutes until my toshiba ( 150 hard drive, 2gb of RAm) decides to load. I have many pictures on both machines and my MAC still wins in the speed department besides my toshiba is more fashionable, it weights less and I have it on a customized skin so I’m just pro MAC all the way, besides The Sims runs ok in MAC

For the best of both worlds just go linux. Many different versions all with different purposes waayyy more customizable than any windows or mac os, i have a mac with leopard and an Hp dual-booting windows and linux and linux is always my OS of choice sooo much faster and more secure than windows and a decent PC will cost half the price of a mac with the same specs.
