Hello, Young Voters — 5 Ways To Motivate The Immovable

sex-booth.JPG5. Put YouTube terminals in the voting booths

You wanna know something? Us college kids are really just big magnets. If you open a dumb video of an overweight thirteen year-old kid singing a pop song from the Falkland Islands, every single student within a mile will be chuckling over your shoulder within fifteen seconds.

If our presidential candidates really want to get the 18-24 crowd out and voting, they should start making films of themselves running drunk and naked across the interstate. Right now, candidates are mostly remembered for being a bunch of lumpy old guys who still haven’t lowered the drinking age. They can do so much better: the McCain/Romney version of “Daft Bodies”, for example, would totally steal the election. I’d vote for them.

4. “Reframe the debate”

This year, the American people are concerned with economic something and whatever with foreclosure blah blah drilling offshore and climate change, very important to something Iraq timetable mumble mumble. Man! The issues are tiring! I need a nap!

So it’s not surprising that college students don’t get out to rep their favorite pols. All they talk about is boring crap that sucks! You know what college kids like? Movies. It’s what we care about. “Iraq” is far away and hard to pronounce properly. All those cutthroat late-night debates need to be centered around the real questions — the tough questions, the ones that will get students waving big posters and burning their underwear.

“I understand that Christian Bale’s a great Batman, Senator Obama, but what’s up with that police run-in? In light of his creepy bevhavior, have you reconsidered your recent “pro-shirtless Bale” position?” “Senator McCain, what’s your stance on Pierce Brosnan singing ABBA? Awful enough to be funny, or just awful enough to suck?” “If elected, what measures do the candidates plan to take to ensure that George Lucas doesn’t ruin another franchise, ever?”

3. Hand out textbook vouchers at the polling place

College students aren’t always very driven people, but damn, we will go through lengths to save money on textbooks. A quick trip down the street and a bit of decision-making is nothing if we can score a discount on that $400 Statistics set that comes with two hardcover books, a study guide we’ll never open, a Miley Cyrus DVD and a custom Yorkshire Terrier, all of which are required. Hell, you can probably put some barbed wire and a few pungee pits on the way, too; we’ll still make the trek. We already try to save money by going through crazy, only semi-English speaking online vendors that may sell you your textbook and may simply sell you a bomb with AIDS.

2. Create a voting drinking game.

What’s voting, anyway? A waste of expensive gas and time better spent surfing Wikipedia. There needs to be an incentive! Of course, polling places could always just put Keystone on tap, but even then, so what? Drunk with a bunch of creaky old people? And they probably won’t let you set up a pong table; some of those voting booths are kinda small.

But think along simpler, more portable lines — like a movie drinking game, you know, “drink every time Garden State sucks and you hate it” or whatever. Start with simple stuff, like “drink every time a chad gets dimpled”. “Drink every time they have to kick someone’s cute little kid out of the voting booth”. Watch out for the splashier events: “drink twice every time someone’s voter registration is screwed up and they get accused of being an illegal immigrant from Turkemenistan” Or “chug every time you’re voting in Florida — it’ll probably improve things overall”.

Of course, when everyone staggers to the TV the next morning, fuzzy and hung over, you discover that somehow “my nuts” has become the next leader of the free world, by write-in vote. Democracy! All right!

1. Have an inspirational, intelligent, charismatic and refreshing candidate on the ballot

I know, it’s a long shot, but just imagine it: millions of Americans rushing out of their homes, lining up to see one man — a candidate who offers something new, something great, who offers a friendly, feel-good kind of politics but still stands firm on principle. A candidate whom you wouldn’t mind having a beer with but whom you also wouldn’t mind trying to balance the national budget. A candidate who probably won’t need triple bypass surgery during his presidency and a candidate who has a charming smile. A candidate you’d want to vote for, and then you’d want to hug.

Yes, it’d be a beautiful thing, wouldn’t it? Masses of bright-eyed youngsters, driven by a new-found political passion like nothing before. Perhaps a false hope, but maybe one day… hey, wait a minute!

Obama

Biased? Me? Never! But seriously, get out and vote this election season! Vote for someone you care about, whoever that may be! And don’t drink and vote, folks. Practice responsible democracy.

Shocking. Taking a jab at McCain’s age..and praising Obama. Pretty much par for the course as far as this website goes.

Par for the course- thank goodness!

With all of the incredibly biased and insanely ridiculous conservative media outlets out there, it’s nice to see a website I enjoy showing a bit of bias the other way.

Let’s just point out, you don’t see allegedly “liberal” media sources openly attacking McCain, however, Fox News openly runs attacks against Obama.

Obama ‘08! The best way to inspire hope is with a fresh take for our generation. Watch out America, young adult idealism is about to make a comeback… and we might even be able to fix this country.

No matter who you’re voting for, just go do it. It doesn’t take that long, unless your voting location is packed, but even so I think it’s worth the wait to take part in something so important. Plus you get a trendy sticker saying you voted :)

It’s amazing to me how people can sit there and say that the mainstream media isn’t biased. Fox actually shows conservatives…God forbid! Because they show both sides, and have more shows with conservatives doesn’t mean that they are a conservative station.

Can you give me actual examples of how FOX is openly attacking Obama. A conservative host on Fox on an opinion show is not the station attacking Obama.

Other stations just sit there and worship Obama like he’s the second coming. Where are the tough questions? They’re too busy having a love affair with Obama to ask him what he actually stands for besides “change.”

I agree with Amanda, except that Fox isn’t conservative. It pretty much is without saying so.

I can’t say I know anything about Obama’s campaign except for that tons of celebrities love him (not really a good reason for me to vote for him?) and that he likes hope and change.

These are fun ways to motivate college students though! I’d jump through flaming hoops to get a discount on textbooks!

Um. This article isn’t about McCain or Obama. It is about motivating our generation to vote. FOR ANYONE. Stop taking life so seriously and just laugh once in awhile. Sheesh.

when it comes to politics, this site fails hard

anyone who says FOX isn’t biased is dumb as hell

Lauren, the number one reason was pretty much “vote because Obama is on the ballot” There’s no denying that this site is biased, so don’t try to.

But yeah I agree with Amanda, I don’t know a single thing Obama is about, he doesn’t really state his stances he just puts down mccains and says they wont work and that fixing this country is going to be hard, but he’s got hope and wants change. At least Mccain is out there trying to think of things we can do to fix the mess we’re in.

It’s not about party it’s about who’s going to do a better job and our decision is between mr. “I have idea after idea after idea about what we can do to get this country back up and running” and mr. “I haven’t a clue what we could do to change the way the country runs, I just know his ideas wont work. But I like change! Duh”

If Obama does have some actual substantial ideas, can they please mainstream them? I’m sick of hearing “he’s a god and he’s going to do so much for this country because he, hmmm, what is hes gonna do again? Oh who cares! Obama rules!”

Oh and Fox is a conservative station, basically the ONLY conservative station, most media is liberal, so get over it.

Casey, I think you need some chocolate cake or something. It is Summer, it is beautiful out and everyone else seems to be in a jolly good mood. Join us!

Lauren….apparently people with conservative viewpoints need chocolate cake because we’re pointing out something that is blantantly biased?

I’m in a great mood, and I agree with Casey and Amanda, so I don’t know what to tell you!

  11. Casey says:
    Mon, 4th Aug 20086:01 pm

thank you Lisa. And actually I’m in quite a good mood, thanks.

    Yikes!

One slightly negative comment about a conservative news bias and… sheesh. Chill.

Amanda and Casey, if you don’t know about Obama’s actual stances, frankly, it’s because you just haven’t been paying attention. His stances are very clear, he doesn’t “just put down McCain” (someone’s been watching Fox news…), he has very specific plans. All you would need to do is check out the New York Times website, any other reliable news source, and/or *gasp* go to Obama’s website, where his stances are VERY clearly stated.

Want to know something else? I know what McCain’s stances are, because I’ve gone to his website, read and listened to his speeches, and I disagree with him on some key issues.

So before you start criticizing Obama, do your homework and back up your statements.

  13. Amanda says:
    Tue, 5th Aug 20088:21 am

    Caroline,

What I was trying to say wasn’t that Obama’s website, etc. didn’t have his stances or his ideas. I was trying to make the point that when he’s interviewed or gives speeches he barely touches the surface. He is praised so much that he almost doesn’t have to.

And when someone disagrees with Obama it doesn’t mean they’ve been watching Fox News. It IS possible for people to disagree with Obama. I don’t care if people don’t agree with John McCain…they’re entitled to their opinions. But I’m allowed to disagree with Obama and not like him either. I know people that I went to college with that were voting for Obama because he was for “change” and when I asked them what he was going to change..I got blank stares. I’m not lumping Obama supporters into that category but there are plenty of people who think that way.

I think that, yes, Fox is conservative, and I also agree that other stations are liberally biased, like CNN. However, I find that Fox’s “attacks” on liberal ideas/politicians are often not intelligent, like when they altered photos of NY Times writers. “The journalists’ teeth had been yellowed, their facial features exaggerated…” (Media Matters, http://mediamatters.org/items/200807020002)

Gosh. *Some* people don’t know what saracasm is…

Apparently some readers here don’t get your great sense of humor Lauren! :D

    haha.

    To others:

It does not matter *who* gets the vote, what is important is that (to each their own) each person *actually* votes.

Cripes, people actually fought for our right to vote! Come on really, if you don’t vote those people fought in vain just because you are too lazy to think for *yourself* and use your *own* personal opinions to choose who *you* think would be the best candidate.

Anyhoo, I think the point of this article is to get people to realize that Everyone should vote because we are lucky enough to have the luxury of being a Democracy.

  16. Caroline says:
    Tue, 5th Aug 20087:35 pm

I do understand the message of the article, and I agree!

    Young people, go vote!

The issue that I have is Casey’s apparent attack because of her lack of appreciation for Lauren’s sarcasm. Because it became political, I jumped in!

    Amanda,

I fully understand that it is possible to disagree with Obama, I do on some points!

However I’m confused, because it seems you don’t like him because some of the people who plan on voting for him don’t understand his message? Or because the media pays attention to him? I don’t dislike McCain because some people who will vote for him don’t understand his plans for the White House. Heck, I don’t even dislike him! I just want to see Obama in office. As for the media’s relationship with McCain, he’s been the Republican media darling for the past few primary seasons. He has an excellent relationship with the media.

  17. Dina says:

You people that complain about not knowing Obama’s stance, you’re on the internet, how about use it constructively! For that matter, I doubt you know anything about Mccain’s stance either genius except that he isn’t loved by celebs

  18. snarktastic says:
    Tue, 5th Aug 200810:02 pm

    bitch fest 08.

the only comment this bitchy one has is, if people don’t want to vote, then don’t encourage them. if people don’t care, they’re probably not informed, and why the hell does this country want more uninformed morons voting?

huffington post offers better liberal coverage and washington times editorial offers better conservative coverage than this site. take it for what it is, people: college candy, not “site for informing the youth about important issues”. [that's for you, j-nyu]. :D

  19. Casey says:
    Wed, 6th Aug 20087:29 pm

Ok you must have missed my point. Of course you can go LOOK and find out what Obamas stances are, that wasn’t my point, my point was that they aren’t MAINSTREAMED (like I said, you people need to read!) like McCain’s are. The general population doesn’t research and frankly doesn’t care. So they are basing their votes on what they see without actually looking (TV news, and the media) If all the media is saying about Obama is that he’s “the second coming” and “Gods gift to the world” Well that can either go one of two ways, people will vote for him because he’s popular or people won’t vote for him because they have no idea what he’s about.

Obviously you can do research, but lets be honest, Americans are lazy, they’re not going to research shit. So why don’t the news stations play fair and publicize both candidates opinions and stop hyping Obama up as a “god”, that’s completely irrelevant to the election.

And it’s ignorant to try and get uninformed people to vote. I don’t want someone who has no idea who either candidate are or what they stand for voting for my future president. For all they know they could be voting for Satin, just because they were told to “Make sure you go vote!” That’s part of this counties problem, Ignorance.

And sarcasm has nothing to do with it. She was trying to say the article wasn’t biased when clearly it was. That was my problem.

  20. Casey says:
    Wed, 6th Aug 20087:34 pm

oh and one more thing, Caroline, I never critsized Obama I critisized the fact that the media glorifies him without even stating his stances, so to people who don’t do the research (and I’m not talking about me) they don’t understand why he’s being glorified, especially when McCain’s stances are stated loud and clear. So it’s not that people aren’t paying attention it’s that his stances aren’t mainstreamed.

Tell us what you're thinking...
