I appreciated reading this. I am in the process of applying to grad school for my m.a. in english and you hit on a few good points. I have not closed the door on the possibility of getting my PhD but for now, I want to go to grad school because I want to learn more about literature — which perhaps is selfish. May I ask where you went to grad school? I'm sorry you had a fairly bad experience but I hope you find some way to apply it down the road.
