If you’re in college, chances are you’ve run across those infamous peach pills at some point. I’m talking about Adderall. These little orange suckers are everywhere, from the library to the lecture hall…to your local sketchy party.
Adderall is designed to be used as study tool for students diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, but you don’t need to have either diagnosis to feel the desired effects of this drug. It’s an amphetamine, so it enhances your attention span and wakes you up, thus helping you pull all-nighters during finals week and just have more stamina for academia in general.
Basically, it’s like Red Bull. On cocaine. With five iced lattes.
But, Adderall is not always used for it’s intended medical purpose (shocker!). These pills can also aid in weight loss, making it popular with girls looking for an easy way to shed the pounds. Not only that, but it’s used to help people party more effectively. Adderall keeps you awake and sharpens your mind, both allowing you to keep that party goin’ a little longer.
As a prescribed user of Adderall, I have used the drug for all of the above reasons. I’ve taken Adderall to help me write twenty pagers, to drop some of my winter weight, and to party.
My Adderall partying usage has ranged from popping half a pill to invigorate bar-hopping to snorting mass quantities of the stuff with a small group of friends. (The latter is not so fun. Putting anything up your nose is foolish, and Adderall is no exception.) At first it was exciting; your heart beats a million miles a minute and you can’t stop talking. Anyone you’re having a conversation with instantly becomes your best friend. You get them; they get you. Best of all: it doesn’t give you the munchies, and due to the sharpening of the mind, you can drink like a sailor and still keep your composure.
However, four hours later, you start to become sick to your stomach. The happy high wears off and all you want to do is hide for days. After a particularly intense binge I remember my crash more distinctly than the high because it was that terrible. Not to mention, this binge did some serious damage on my immune system and didn’t help my mono. Even worse, the people I did it with that time just talked about Seinfeld. All night. At a lightning fast pace. Then we ended up watching Fight Club, and I couldn’t even appreciate Brad Pitt’s hotness because you know what else Adderall does? Takes all the blood away from your downtown area and rushes it to your brain.
No sex drive, yippee!
Even after the lame experiences of partying with it, I still take Adderall for classes and my studies. I’ve learned to use it in moderation and only when necessary. Most importantly, I refuse to give it to people, especially friends. When people know you have it, it’s difficult to know whether they want to see you for you, or for your orange bottle.
What are your thoughts? Any experiences with the peach stuff, good or bad?

I was diagnosed with ADD when I was 7, and was on ritalin for 7 years until i switched to Adderall. I have had a great experience with it. I dont know what to say about abusing it, It doesnt seem like a very smart thing to do. If you play with fire, you might get burned.
You said you were prescribed Adderall, but do you really have ADD/ADHD? I dont think you’d get that weird crash affect if you really needed the pills.
Soph says:
Wed, 13th Aug 20085:56 pm
the crash was probably a result of snorting waaaay more than an intended dose, and the fact that the actual act of snorting it causes it to be much more potent than if taken orally. your digestive system allows for much slower absorption of the active ingredients; coating your lungs with the stuff causes almost instantaneous and far more extreme effects.

I’m with Bri. I actually was diagnosed with ADHD only a few months ago. I am a perfectionist so I did well in school, so I was under the radar, even though I had a horrible time concentrating and went through bouts of depression, etc. I think that it is a good fix for finals, hard tests, whatever, and most likely you will not get hurt. But, personally, I would never want to take a prescription that is not mine, not that it’s going to kill me, but taking too high of a dose causes addictive tendencies and can trigger depression or anxiety. The crash effect comes from taking/getting used to too high of a dose. While I was guilty of trying before I got a prescription (good/bad.. I realized it helped, but I took to high of a dose and it screwed things up) and I can’t discourage anyone from using it, all I can say is be careful. It can consume you.

I wouldn’t suggest abusing Adderall to someone who doesn’t already use it. But if you’re going to use it help you study (which WORKS)… if it’s in a time-released capsule: don’t break it open and let it sit on your tongue. Don’t take it on an empty stomach. Be prepared to pee… A LOT. And make yourself eat even though you won’t be hungry for hours. Last finals week, I passed out in the lecture hall during my last exam from lack of sleep and not eating enough (thanks to Adderall)…BUT I got an A. Bottom line: just know how you personally react to it before you make a last-minute decision to stay up all night before a huge exam or a paper is due.

Okay, as a college student and former drug user, I must say if you’re looking to “party,” adderall is NOT the drug to go for here people… that’s just stupid.
I’ve done all KINDS of recreational drugs in excess(cocaine, ecstasy, lsd, etc. etc), and adderall does not give you the positive effects that most attribute to balancing out the risk to your health and welbeing, its just dumb. It makes you sit and pick at your fingernails or other super-absorbing activity for 3 or 4 hours, and then makes you hurl. I mean, I can personally handle coke and acid better than adderall, it just makes me sick, clammy and miserable every time I take it.
It’s very useful as a studying tool during finals, I think we can all agree with that, when you have something you WANT to sit an dfocus on for that long. But if you’re looking to just get f*cked up and party, you might as well go for the real stuff. (Cocaine might not be any better for you, but at least it’ll numb that nose after a few seconds, adderall will just burn you to hell and back while you’re sitting there sniffling and wiping your nose… tisk – tisk)
I’m not suggesting anyone USE drugs or trying to glorify them in any way, let’s make that very clear, just that it’s quite naive (and counter-productive) to abuse adderall in that fashion.
So if you want to be/look stupid, go ahead and snort a bunch of adderall, have a painful, bleeding nose, clammy hands and sweaty feet for 6-8 hours, and not be able to carry on a decent convo with anyone… you’ll look very attractive and will have a super time, I promise.
…Just dont forget the bottle of Pepto for later on.
Geez.

i was prescribed adderall at school which was rather easy to get my hands on. yes, i have trouble keeping focus or remembering things but i have to admit i don’t think i have ADD…or if i do, nothing severe AT ALL.
anyway, at first i would take it every morning so i could get a nice workout at the gym (i mean, HARDCORE. i also didn’t hve much of an appetite) then go to class and be alert. but when i stopped taking it? um, i wanted to die. i was miserable. i was depressed. indifferent about everything including my bf, family, and friends. like another poster said it should definitely be used in moderation unless you truly NEED it to function. now i only use it when i need that extra boost to concentrate but for any other reason–NO THANKS!!

With all the trouble that this country has been going through with the abuse of prescription drugs, this post really disappoints me. It shows taking prescription drugs that you don’t need as an okay thing, and it’s not. There is a reason that this drug is not on grocery shelves. Remember that.

It’s not on grocery store shelves but it is prescribed to 10 year old kids. This stuff is scary, but it seriously works wonders. But it does freak me out that it’s given to children so young. I know what it does to me…and I can’t imagine what it does to their little minds/bodies.

It is actually more dangerous to snort adderall than coke becuse people don’t grind teh adderall up enough and the chunks could get lodged in your brain.
It is a horrible idea. I can’t even believe people do this.

Um, I wholeheartedly agree that snorting adderall is stupid, but NOTHING that you snort goes into your brain!? (at least, directly..) It goes into your sinus system, and down your throat…
Into your blood stream, and then into your brain, sure… But the only thing ‘chucks’ of adderall will do is become lodged at the top of your sinus cavity in your nose and burn like hell.
at least coke will numb the pain… lol

i found out recently that people in college in the 60s and 70s used to do pills called black beauties or white crosses. after hearing the adults talking about it, i looked up the chemical composition on the internet. it was hard to find exact ingredients, but i found two ingredients that were thought to have compose them (these pills were black market versions of once prescribed pills for dieting and depression). the ingredients thought to be in these pills are now in adderal, along with some others, and they faded off the market as adderal took its place. the nicknames stayed, becoming nicknames for different amphetamines, but the actual pills done in the 60s and 70s seem to have gone away… along with the yellow jackets and the christmas trees apparently.
in other words, people have been doing this same stuff in college before adderal was even around.

I’ve had ADD since the I was very young, and continue to suffer from it to this day. I used to take Adderall (however I am now on a different, patch-form medication), and I doubt that the way you’re using it is admirable. Blogging about it is a bit questionable, too.
And if you crash from it, that means it probably isn’t for you.

Why were you given an Rx anyway? You clearly are only using it for the social value. People like you cause so many problems for the people who actually need this medication such as social stigma, having to go to the doctor in person every month to get a new Rx because refills aren’t allowed (because of ABUSERS), among so many other things. I dont know why you bothered writing this article. It makes you look pathetic.

I just want to say that I used to abuse prescription painkillers and now take adderall in replacement. When I take my adderall (as prescribed), I don’t even think about the pain pills which is a very big deal for me because i was up to almost 30 pills a day of a really strong narcotic painkiller. Adderall has helped give me the energy I need to get thru the day and relieves my depression associated with my withdrawls. I think it’s an amazing drug and I plan on taking it forever!!

For all those who want to be all “im to good for drugs and the people who use” and “If you ever use drugs illegally you are a horrible person”….. I myself am not a huge supporter of drug abuse (i have lost a couple of friends from it)…BUT i have also had my share of experience with them… I believe that if you are a strong enough individual to not take over advantage of the drug then using it isn’t so horrible…I have tried a few drugs some that i enjoyed others i did not but i was able to control myself and not take them extensively….As for Finals and procrastinated essay papers Adderall has helped me out quite a bit. And yet again i dont use them habitually….as for coming off of them…eating is a big problem (for me anyways) I once took a 30mg adderall (mind you im only 110 lbs.) at 9 am. with two pieces of toast. 3 final exams, 1 essay, and a job interview later it was 9pm. and i realized that toast was all i had eaten for that 12 hour period (I had also taken a low dose caffein pill after the adderall started to lose its affect). needless to say i pigged out once it wore off. As far as the affects while on it…I don’t necessaraly talk all the time but when i do i talk super fast. I’m jittery when sitting still but not to where it keeps me from focusing(quite the contrary). One bad affect that i seem to have from it (and this could just be me) is that i chain smoke like CRAZY…now i dont know if that is because when i take it its usually during a high stress period of time anyways(AKA FINALS) or if i just crave the calming affects of nicotine to conteract the speed of the amphetamine…..BUT any ways I am not just some lame hardcore drug head..I am a B average Nursing major (thats right im a nursing major and have used drugs) And i don’t cheat for my grades….To me illegal drugs for the purpose of studying is okay as long as you dont have any addictive traits…As far as those who let illegal drugs control their life i have no respect.

PFFT do what ya want, like life matters in general and there will be argument on that last phrase but give me a reason for a reason for a reason for a reason and it becomes a shortlived figmented phenomenon, you people that say that drugs are bad and if you are addicted then you should be admitted to a rehab are why people feel so bad about themselves. They believe that they are horrible, when instead you should just be like, well does it make you happy? if it does then so be it, if it doesn’t then you can get off of it if ya want, i know ya can, but its no big deal. If you make anything a big deal, it is, and drug abuse is not a big deal just like everything else in this world, including murder.

This article gives a very accurate explanation of the effects and the uses of Adderall. It is also very ironic, because I possess the polar opposition of these stories of prescribed individuals using it for its designated reasons. I am a college student in a very competitive school. I rather enjoy the high that is obtained from snorting the drug, and on many occasions I have obtained personal experience in the field of all nighters during finals season, as well as papers. It began as a tool I used in which “helped” me to study on a more focused level as well as comprehend at a higher level. I have taken all major tests while on the drug and strangely but awesomely I have received high A’s and A’s in general in classes such as biomedical engineering lab, advanced physics of sound and light, Lab based calculus, and most of all it helped a great deal with the preparation and actual taking of my MCAT’s and soon my dissertation. I do not consider myself an addict. Maybe mentally dependent on the effects…or perhaps the outcome? It only makes sense that college students use the drug. Even if the contents of a capsule are replaced with orange sugar, the mere fact is placebo-esque and empowering that something as convenient as a pill or capsule can increase your scores on a test. What is expected? How many drug addicts enter rehab with the excuse that they were only attempting to improve their status in the educational population? Let’s please focus on or worry about something that has a heavier effect on college kids these days in age, kills daily, and now almost completely inevitable. What about teen violence, marijuana, or alcohol consumption? Leave the healthy scholars who dont mind shaving a few years off of their lives in order to achieve a lifelong goal and perhaps their Constitutional right of pursuit of happiness. Leave us alone and worry about what really matters. You have a unified government to worry about for the next 2 years, at least, and quite possibly the take over of a single faction in government. Be careful out there, politicians are human too.

I do not have ADD and neither does my friends. However the use adderall like it was their best friend. I personally have taken adderall to study for my exams but the side affects were horrible so i never enjoyed taking adderall. But my friends on other hand… They snort it just to snort it, for no reason at all, sitting at home at 10 at night, just for the hell of it. or snorting two pills during parties and getting other people to do it with them. They become freaking strung out and weird and their personalities change for the worse. I am hurting because my friends were still doing this all night long even after our own close friend died and was found that day because of overdosing on pills the night before.

Well personally speaking, adderall is a great tool to help you concentrate and study for those big exams. It makes your brain work more effectively and for longer periods of time at once. I find that if you break up a pill and split it up into thirds or fourths and take them a few hours apart from each other you don’t really have a comedown, your simply tired after the last dose wears off. I have used it for almost every exam so far and I have not taken it in between semesters and don’t craze to either. It isn’t addictive if your careful about it. And if you want to take a drug for the high there are so many others out there that are better like even just weed. Be careful about it and no problems will occur.

I would just like to say that I now understand why the curve was set SO MUCH HIGHER than I could reach in all my college classes. I’ve heard of quite a few people here taking Adderall, and I guess I hadn’t realized until recently just how effective and prevalent it is. No wonder my grades were fucked every semester, damn curved classes! I should’ve taken some too, maybe I wouldn’t have been on academic probation so often. >.<

Adderall is good for “waking up” and being able to focus. I consider it like mental “lube”. And because it is a stimulant, like so many other drugs including cocaine and meth, it should definitely be a point enveloped with responsibility and moderation.
Keep in mind your brain is your personal oasis; it achieves balance and well being naturally (especially in healthy people). Once you start using any type of drugs, weed, alchy, adderall, meth, your natural balance will be thrown off to a certain degree and you will have to recover. That is not to say moderative use (NOT abuse!) of drugs can enhance your perceptions and improve your abilities. If you use Adderall in moderation, recovery time back to your natural balance is minimal. If you abuse it, you can fuck yourself up and feel mad withdrawal + personality changes (due to imbalance) but those will over time recover too.
It’s all about moderation and being responsible with any substance. It is a give and a take. Be good to your mind, you only have one (1).
