Adderall: Not Just for ADD Anymore
[Disclaimer: The information presented in this post is the opinion of the author and CC does not promote the use of the drug without a prescription and for anything other than its prescribed use. You've been through DARE. You're old enough to make mature decisions regarding your health]
If you’re in college, chances are you’ve run across those infamous peach pills at some point. I’m talking about Adderall. These little orange suckers are everywhere, from the library to the lecture hall…to your local sketchy party.
Adderall is designed to be used as study tool for students diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, but you don’t need to have either diagnosis to feel the desired effects of this drug. It’s an amphetamine, so it enhances your attention span and wakes you up, thus helping you pull all-nighters during finals week and just have more stamina for academia in general.
Basically, it’s like Red Bull. On cocaine. With five iced lattes.
But, Adderall is not always used for it’s intended medical purpose (shocker!). These pills can also aid in weight loss, making it popular with girls looking for an easy way to shed the pounds. Not only that, but it’s used to help people party more effectively. Adderall keeps you awake and sharpens your mind, both allowing you to keep that party goin’ a little longer.
As a prescribed user of Adderall, I have used the drug for all of the above reasons. I’ve taken Adderall to help me write twenty pagers, to drop some of my winter weight, and to party.
My Adderall partying usage has ranged from popping half a pill to invigorate bar-hopping to snorting mass quantities of the stuff with a small group of friends. (The latter is not so fun. Putting anything up your nose is foolish, and Adderall is no exception.) At first it was exciting; your heart beats a million miles a minute and you can’t stop talking. Anyone you’re having a conversation with instantly becomes your best friend. You get them; they get you. Best of all: it doesn’t give you the munchies, and due to the sharpening of the mind, you can drink like a sailor and still keep your composure.
However, four hours later, you start to become sick to your stomach. The happy high wears off and all you want to do is hide for days. After a particularly intense binge I remember my crash more distinctly than the high because it was that terrible. Not to mention, this binge did some serious damage on my immune system and didn’t help my mono. Even worse, the people I did it with that time just talked about Seinfeld. All night. At a lightning fast pace. Then we ended up watching Fight Club, and I couldn’t even appreciate Brad Pitt’s hotness because you know what else Adderall does? Takes all the blood away from your downtown area and rushes it to your brain.
No sex drive, yippee!
Even after the lame experiences of partying with it, I still take Adderall for classes and my studies. I’ve learned to use it in moderation and only when necessary. Most importantly, I refuse to give it to people, especially friends. When people know you have it, it’s difficult to know whether they want to see you for you, or for your orange bottle.
What are your thoughts? Any experiences with the peach stuff, good or bad?
Tell us what you're thinking...

I was diagnosed with ADD when I was 7, and was on ritalin for 7 years until i switched to Adderall. I have had a great experience with it. I dont know what to say about abusing it, It doesnt seem like a very smart thing to do. If you play with fire, you might get burned.
You said you were prescribed Adderall, but do you really have ADD/ADHD? I dont think you'd get that weird crash affect if you really needed the pills.
Soph says:
Wed, 13th Aug 200812:56 pm
the crash was probably a result of snorting waaaay more than an intended dose, and the fact that the actual act of snorting it causes it to be much more potent than if taken orally. your digestive system allows for much slower absorption of the active ingredients; coating your lungs with the stuff causes almost instantaneous and far more extreme effects.

I'm with Bri. I actually was diagnosed with ADHD only a few months ago. I am a perfectionist so I did well in school, so I was under the radar, even though I had a horrible time concentrating and went through bouts of depression, etc. I think that it is a good fix for finals, hard tests, whatever, and most likely you will not get hurt. But, personally, I would never want to take a prescription that is not mine, not that it's going to kill me, but taking too high of a dose causes addictive tendencies and can trigger depression or anxiety. The crash effect comes from taking/getting used to too high of a dose. While I was guilty of trying before I got a prescription (good/bad.. I realized it helped, but I took to high of a dose and it screwed things up) and I can't discourage anyone from using it, all I can say is be careful. It can consume you.

I wouldn't suggest abusing Adderall to someone who doesn't already use it. But if you're going to use it help you study (which WORKS)… if it's in a time-released capsule: don't break it open and let it sit on your tongue. Don't take it on an empty stomach. Be prepared to pee… A LOT. And make yourself eat even though you won't be hungry for hours. Last finals week, I passed out in the lecture hall during my last exam from lack of sleep and not eating enough (thanks to Adderall)…BUT I got an A. Bottom line: just know how you personally react to it before you make a last-minute decision to stay up all night before a huge exam or a paper is due.

Okay, as a college student and former drug user, I must say if you're looking to "party," adderall is NOT the drug to go for here people… that's just stupid.
I've done all KINDS of recreational drugs in excess(cocaine, ecstasy, lsd, etc. etc), and adderall does not give you the positive effects that most attribute to balancing out the risk to your health and welbeing, its just dumb. It makes you sit and pick at your fingernails or other super-absorbing activity for 3 or 4 hours, and then makes you hurl. I mean, I can personally handle coke and acid better than adderall, it just makes me sick, clammy and miserable every time I take it.
It's very useful as a studying tool during finals, I think we can all agree with that, when you have something you WANT to sit an dfocus on for that long. But if you're looking to just get f*cked up and party, you might as well go for the real stuff. (Cocaine might not be any better for you, but at least it'll numb that nose after a few seconds, adderall will just burn you to hell and back while you're sitting there sniffling and wiping your nose… tisk – tisk)
I'm not suggesting anyone USE drugs or trying to glorify them in any way, let's make that very clear, just that it's quite naive (and counter-productive) to abuse adderall in that fashion.
So if you want to be/look stupid, go ahead and snort a bunch of adderall, have a painful, bleeding nose, clammy hands and sweaty feet for 6-8 hours, and not be able to carry on a decent convo with anyone… you'll look very attractive and will have a super time, I promise.
…Just dont forget the bottle of Pepto for later on.
Geez.

i was prescribed adderall at school which was rather easy to get my hands on. yes, i have trouble keeping focus or remembering things but i have to admit i don't think i have ADD…or if i do, nothing severe AT ALL.
anyway, at first i would take it every morning so i could get a nice workout at the gym (i mean, HARDCORE. i also didn't hve much of an appetite) then go to class and be alert. but when i stopped taking it? um, i wanted to die. i was miserable. i was depressed. indifferent about everything including my bf, family, and friends. like another poster said it should definitely be used in moderation unless you truly NEED it to function. now i only use it when i need that extra boost to concentrate but for any other reason–NO THANKS!!

With all the trouble that this country has been going through with the abuse of prescription drugs, this post really disappoints me. It shows taking prescription drugs that you don't need as an okay thing, and it's not. There is a reason that this drug is not on grocery shelves. Remember that.
girlinOH says:

It's not on grocery store shelves but it is prescribed to 10 year old kids. This stuff is scary, but it seriously works wonders. But it does freak me out that it's given to children so young. I know what it does to me…and I can't imagine what it does to their little minds/bodies.

It is actually more dangerous to snort adderall than coke becuse people don't grind teh adderall up enough and the chunks could get lodged in your brain.
It is a horrible idea. I can't even believe people do this.

Um, I wholeheartedly agree that snorting adderall is stupid, but NOTHING that you snort goes into your brain!? (at least, directly..) It goes into your sinus system, and down your throat…
Into your blood stream, and then into your brain, sure… But the only thing 'chucks' of adderall will do is become lodged at the top of your sinus cavity in your nose and burn like hell.
at least coke will numb the pain… lol

i found out recently that people in college in the 60s and 70s used to do pills called black beauties or white crosses. after hearing the adults talking about it, i looked up the chemical composition on the internet. it was hard to find exact ingredients, but i found two ingredients that were thought to have compose them (these pills were black market versions of once prescribed pills for dieting and depression). the ingredients thought to be in these pills are now in adderal, along with some others, and they faded off the market as adderal took its place. the nicknames stayed, becoming nicknames for different amphetamines, but the actual pills done in the 60s and 70s seem to have gone away… along with the yellow jackets and the christmas trees apparently.
in other words, people have been doing this same stuff in college before adderal was even around.

I've had ADD since the I was very young, and continue to suffer from it to this day. I used to take Adderall (however I am now on a different, patch-form medication), and I doubt that the way you're using it is admirable. Blogging about it is a bit questionable, too.
And if you crash from it, that means it probably isn't for you.

Why were you given an Rx anyway? You clearly are only using it for the social value. People like you cause so many problems for the people who actually need this medication such as social stigma, having to go to the doctor in person every month to get a new Rx because refills aren't allowed (because of ABUSERS), among so many other things. I dont know why you bothered writing this article. It makes you look pathetic.

I just want to say that I used to abuse prescription painkillers and now take adderall in replacement. When I take my adderall (as prescribed), I don't even think about the pain pills which is a very big deal for me because i was up to almost 30 pills a day of a really strong narcotic painkiller. Adderall has helped give me the energy I need to get thru the day and relieves my depression associated with my withdrawls. I think it's an amazing drug and I plan on taking it forever!!

For all those who want to be all "im to good for drugs and the people who use" and "If you ever use drugs illegally you are a horrible person"….. I myself am not a huge supporter of drug abuse (i have lost a couple of friends from it)…BUT i have also had my share of experience with them… I believe that if you are a strong enough individual to not take over advantage of the drug then using it isn't so horrible…I have tried a few drugs some that i enjoyed others i did not but i was able to control myself and not take them extensively….As for Finals and procrastinated essay papers Adderall has helped me out quite a bit. And yet again i dont use them habitually….as for coming off of them…eating is a big problem (for me anyways) I once took a 30mg adderall (mind you im only 110 lbs.) at 9 am. with two pieces of toast. 3 final exams, 1 essay, and a job interview later it was 9pm. and i realized that toast was all i had eaten for that 12 hour period (I had also taken a low dose caffein pill after the adderall started to lose its affect). needless to say i pigged out once it wore off. As far as the affects while on it…I don't necessaraly talk all the time but when i do i talk super fast. I'm jittery when sitting still but not to where it keeps me from focusing(quite the contrary). One bad affect that i seem to have from it (and this could just be me) is that i chain smoke like CRAZY…now i dont know if that is because when i take it its usually during a high stress period of time anyways(AKA FINALS) or if i just crave the calming affects of nicotine to conteract the speed of the amphetamine…..BUT any ways I am not just some lame hardcore drug head..I am a B average Nursing major (thats right im a nursing major and have used drugs) And i don't cheat for my grades….To me illegal drugs for the purpose of studying is okay as long as you dont have any addictive traits…As far as those who let illegal drugs control their life i have no respect.

PFFT do what ya want, like life matters in general and there will be argument on that last phrase but give me a reason for a reason for a reason for a reason and it becomes a shortlived figmented phenomenon, you people that say that drugs are bad and if you are addicted then you should be admitted to a rehab are why people feel so bad about themselves. They believe that they are horrible, when instead you should just be like, well does it make you happy? if it does then so be it, if it doesn't then you can get off of it if ya want, i know ya can, but its no big deal. If you make anything a big deal, it is, and drug abuse is not a big deal just like everything else in this world, including murder.

This article gives a very accurate explanation of the effects and the uses of Adderall. It is also very ironic, because I possess the polar opposition of these stories of prescribed individuals using it for its designated reasons. I am a college student in a very competitive school. I rather enjoy the high that is obtained from snorting the drug, and on many occasions I have obtained personal experience in the field of all nighters during finals season, as well as papers. It began as a tool I used in which "helped" me to study on a more focused level as well as comprehend at a higher level. I have taken all major tests while on the drug and strangely but awesomely I have received high A's and A's in general in classes such as biomedical engineering lab, advanced physics of sound and light, Lab based calculus, and most of all it helped a great deal with the preparation and actual taking of my MCAT's and soon my dissertation. I do not consider myself an addict. Maybe mentally dependent on the effects…or perhaps the outcome? It only makes sense that college students use the drug. Even if the contents of a capsule are replaced with orange sugar, the mere fact is placebo-esque and empowering that something as convenient as a pill or capsule can increase your scores on a test. What is expected? How many drug addicts enter rehab with the excuse that they were only attempting to improve their status in the educational population? Let's please focus on or worry about something that has a heavier effect on college kids these days in age, kills daily, and now almost completely inevitable. What about teen violence, marijuana, or alcohol consumption? Leave the healthy scholars who dont mind shaving a few years off of their lives in order to achieve a lifelong goal and perhaps their Constitutional right of pursuit of happiness. Leave us alone and worry about what really matters. You have a unified government to worry about for the next 2 years, at least, and quite possibly the take over of a single faction in government. Be careful out there, politicians are human too.

I personally have taken adderall to study for my exams but the side affects were horrible so i never enjoyed taking adderall. But my friends on other hand… They snort it just to snort it, for no reason at all, sitting at home at 10 at night, just for the hell of it. or snorting two pills during parties and getting other people to do it with them. They become freaking strung out and weird and their personalities change for the worse. I am hurting because my friends were still doing this all night long even after our own close friend died and was found that day because of overdosing on pills the night before.

Well personally speaking, adderall is a great tool to help you concentrate and study for those big exams. It makes your brain work more effectively and for longer periods of time at once. I find that if you break up a pill and split it up into thirds or fourths and take them a few hours apart from each other you don't really have a comedown, your simply tired after the last dose wears off. I have used it for almost every exam so far and I have not taken it in between semesters and don't craze to either. It isn't addictive if your careful about it. And if you want to take a drug for the high there are so many others out there that are better like even just weed. Be careful about it and no problems will occur.

I've heard of quite a few people here taking Adderall, and I guess I hadn't realized until recently just how effective and prevalent it is. No wonder my grades were fucked every semester, damn curved classes! I should've taken some too, maybe I wouldn't have been on academic probation so often. >.<

Adderall is good for "waking up" and being able to focus. I consider it like mental "lube". And because it is a stimulant, like so many other drugs including cocaine and meth, it should definitely be a point enveloped with responsibility and moderation.
Keep in mind your brain is your personal oasis; it achieves balance and well being naturally (especially in healthy people). Once you start using any type of drugs, weed, alchy, adderall, meth, your natural balance will be thrown off to a certain degree and you will have to recover. That is not to say moderative use (NOT abuse!) of drugs can enhance your perceptions and improve your abilities. If you use Adderall in moderation, recovery time back to your natural balance is minimal. If you abuse it, you can fuck yourself up and feel mad withdrawal + personality changes (due to imbalance) but those will over time recover too.
It's all about moderation and being responsible with any substance. It is a give and a take. Be good to your mind, you only have one (1).

I am in high school and my friend had ADD/ADHD. It was finals week and she had mentioned how she would actually take her medicine this week because she needed to concentrate. I was like oh thats what I need! She asked me if I wanted any, and I was like sure. I wasnt really going to take it until my other friend had told me she had taken it before and it didnt do anything really to her. So i thought what the hey, and i took it right before school (First mistake) During that day of school, it hit me about the middle of 1st period. I felt calm and cool and I also felt really concentrated. We were working on our projects for art and i got mine done in one day and it took almost everyone else 3 days. I got all my final review packets done that day, and i worked really hard. I also felt like all i wanted to do is talk peoples heads off.. The bad thing about it was when I would stand up or walk around I felt kind of dizzy and that everyone was walking 10 times faster than me. Other than that, it had all good side affects. The next day I had one final so i decided to take another one. It didnt make me feel as good as it did the day before, but it helped. The next day (Today) I had 3 finals and i planned on taking it again but when I woke up this morning I started vommiting up vile..absoultly nothing. Because this adderall made me lose my appetite for anything. I seriously didnt eat more than 500 calories for those 2 days. So I had to miss school and finals today all because the adderall started showing its side-affects. For anybody who thinks this is cool to take, yea it is, but the side affects are way worse and I would never want to experience this morning again.

My best friend gets prescribed 60mg Adderall, and she only takes her two pills in the morning when she has school. So the extra pills like if we have snowdays or its the weekend, or even christmas break like it is now. We have 2 weeks off of school so she has 20 extra pills. So like last two nights all we have done is pop pills, take the beeds and swollow them, and snort. I have been seeing things since 4am this morning. And its hard to talk. They say adderall is suposed to help you stay awake, and it sure dose. In the past 2 1/2 days I have taken over 210mg of Adderall. Not only is my mind wide awake, but my body is saying "fuck you" and I feel like my body has shut down on me, and when I try moving it just takes so much energry. So to get rid of the lazyness we smoked a blunt. As soon as I was high and took 2 more pills, it was like I just woke up from a 12 hour nap. Not only was I still seeing things, but I started trippin balls, I just felt like I had to talk, but the carpet, walls, and ceiling kept coming in on me.
Then I went home and took a 5 hour nap. I woke up and I couldn't belive that just this morning at like 4am I was seeing things.
Everytime I take a huge amount of Adderall, right after the effects kick in till the time where it starts wearing off I dont remember anything. I feel as if I blacked out, So this time me and my friend kept a note book by us and a pen and just every once in a while just quick sum up on paper how we feel.
When I read how I felt last night, I was suprized.

Hi, Are any of you physicians? Some of the advice you're giving doesn't sound professional at all. to be honest, everyone is different and reacts differently on different days. These are dangerous drugs and if you're using D-amphetamines (adderall) in large doses for recreational use you could easily have heart failure. It's just that simple. And the longer you abuse it in large doses the more damage you do on your heart valves. Your heart valvles are like washers and o-rings. The more pressure you put on them the faster you wear them out. Although excersizing alone actually strengthens them because they're apart of a muscle, having your heart rate sped up without excersize is going to do some serious damage. Please take it for what it was prescribed for.

I've had ADHA since I was a young girl. I was on meds but once I got old enough to choose (14yr old, and back then at that age taking medication WAS NOT cool) I quit takin them bcuz I thought I didnt need them. I dropped outta skool at 15, 1st semester of 19 and began a long journey through my teenage years of constant partying. It led to nothing, emptiness, night after night of mindless chatter.Well then I started to get into trouble….um bad trouble. At age 21 I got sentenced to 3yr prison. I now know I was trying to 'self medicate' with other things and it all led to disater. I have been out of prison now for almost 2 years. I am back on Adderall, in my 2nd yr of college, and work for an awesome company. I have no problem eating on Adderall, I'm just normal. Blah. Although when Im finished with school I do want to stop taking it. And I not only wouldnt give it to my friends, but I dont even tell them. When ppl know u take Adderall, all of a sudden everybodies ADHD….Leave it alone if you dont need it.

I take adderall and it makes my balls hurt like a mother fucker sometimes… anyone else experience this? Also, don't use meth. If you want a drug to use recreationally, smoke pot. It won't kill you, and contrary to popular belief it does not make you stupid (kill all your brain cells). In fact, it's been proven that alcohol kills more brain cells than weed, and studies are being done to see if THC even kills brain cells at all (it's been hypothesized that it actually stimulates brain cell growth).

I got a script for it about 6 months ago. I was extremely surprised at how easy it was to get in and out of the doctors office with a script in my hands. I basically just told her the truth, that I am in college, and I have always found that I have trouble focusing; that I wanted to use it as a study aid. She administered a survey, that of which I had already answered most of the questions for through internet surveys, asked a few questions and that was it.
I had taken adderall a few times before this, so I thought I knew what I was getting myself into. I soon started to build up a tolerance. Not long after, I started snorting it, because the effects were increased while the amount I had to take decreased. After my first script ran out, the withdraws started. All I wanted to do was sleep. Every time I tried to open a book and get some work done my head would start to pound, and I would give up immediately. This lasted for the better part of a week. Maybe after the 3rd day or so, the symptoms started to go away, and I returned to my usual lazy state of mind. Of course, I told my doctor none of this.
After another month or so, I realized that I needed to start taking it as it’s intended to, and stop abusing it. I found that when you sniff it, it provides a much different effect, in that it make your brain not function right for doing class work, like its going through an information overload. After taking it correctly, although still not at the intended dosage, it started to work better for me. Usually I try to designate days to “cool down”, and take a break from it, but on big study days I might still end up taking twice the recommended dosage for a day. After this run, the first several days after not having it were not as bad, but I still found that I wanted to sleep more often. However, I think my unhealthy diet and lack of exercise might contribute. This must still be causing some negative side effects though.
I enjoy the drug, but I realize that its dangerous. After this semester I am going to take a long hiatus from it, and try to get into a normal exorcise routine to gain some perspective about my natural mindset after taking it for six months. I think that if it is treated responsibly, the benefits definitely out way the side effects. But the temptations for abuse are strong, especially when you have a strong workload and have it in the back of your mind that taking just a little more will make it that much easier to complete.

To the author of this article:
You have been perscribed. You know that it is not used as simply a “study tool” for those diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. Period. Passing it off as a casual, no-big-deal, drug in your introduction makes you look irresponsible and part of the disease that is abuse of perscription medication…. regardless of the fact you claim to have not passed it out to friends. Case in point: You’ve partaken in “partying” with your medication and stated other around you were on it as well. Glad you had a fun night with Seinfeld.
You’re article is less than insightful. It’s more of an anecdotal “How-To” for the recreational use of a neurological drug.
Nice touch with the “Your thoughts??” at the end. It is people like you and your friends that make a laughing stock of ADD/ADHD diagnoses and the people who REALLY NEED these drugs to function at least half way normally.
To Anonymous: “..I am a B average Nursing major (thats right im a nursing major and have used drugs) And i don’t cheat for my grades….To me illegal drugs for the purpose of studying is okay as long as you dont have any addictive traits…As far as those who let illegal drugs control their life i have no respect”
um…. wtf? As a NURSING STUDENT, when you graduate, you will be dedicating your LIFE to the betterment and overall HEALTH of the population and you should be ashamed of your above statement. First of all, Adderal is a perscription. It is not an illegal drug; OBTAINING without perscription/SELLING without permission is illegal. Second, as long as you don’t have addictive traits?? That statement makes NO sense. Think of the classes you’re taking! Somewhere in there you’d be or have already covered ADDICTION. Anyone can get “addicted” to anything at anytime regardless of if they “show addictive traits”. That was a stupid thing to say. It’s a neurological thing that effects both the brain AND body. It is not anything you can consciously or otherwise control. And finally: you have no respect for those who “let” illegal drugs control their lives? Honey, you’re going to see that EVERYDAY in your clinic, hospital, or wherever you provide health services. You will be caring for these people either directly or indirectly. You recite that promise at your nightengale ceremony.
Seriously, you should know better…
To Johnny: “I do not consider myself an addict. Maybe mentally dependent on the effects…or perhaps the outcome?”
Sooooo not a clever comment…You’ve taken MCATs supposedly.. k fine. Then you’ve done the MED SCHOOL mess. I’d think you’d know that being mentally DEPENDENT on and being ADDICTED to something has a reaaaaaaal fine line. I would argue there IS no difference. You can’t have one without the other. Ha ha “addicted to the outcome….” If people could be addicted/mentally dependent on an outcome then we’d all be addicted to orgasms, wouldn’t you think? Wtf kind of a statement were you trying to make? Splitting hairs like that doesn’t make you sound clever, it makes you sound stupid.
To PT Cal:
Thank you for bringing THAT up so I didn’t have to.
I am in your pocket.
To the rest of the readers etc:
ADD/ADHD (attention deficit disorder) is diagnosed according to lists of symptoms that medical professionals evaluate. It is a NEUROBIOLOGICAL problem, with well-researched frontal lobe and executive functioning implications. Go look it up.
The following link is general info and most ADDer’s know all this… it’s how we got diagnosed.
http://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/guide/attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder-adhd
Those who think it helps us just “study” therefore it can be used by those WITHOUT ADD/ADHD, are completely misinformed and ignorant.
It is disgusting to me that people without the affliction and even those WITH it have NO idea WHAT ADD/ADHD is, how it functions and what it means for your brain chemistry. Most believe it’s an inability to just pay atteniton…. K then everyone on the planet has ADD/ADHD of someform.
This link provides more in depth info touching on the neuroscience of ADD/ADHD.
https://www.neurorelief.com/files/add&adhd.pdf
Brain chemistry differs with each ailment, each “normal” individual and each “un-normal” individual. I’m not being insensitive when I say “un-normal”, I am speaking purely on a biological basis. This is why we have MULTIPLE drugs for the same ailment: some won’t work with your head or body like others will.
You get diagnosed, then Doc finds the right drug for you.
Drugs used to treat neurological ailments preform different according to the specific disorder: whether that means to inhibit the release of neurotransmitters (which btw, control EVERYTHING you do) or activate their release.
That being said, drugs MADE to control the neurological chaos that is ADD/ADHD were simply that. MADE FOR ADD/ADHD. They are amphetemines (not to be confused with METH, speed etc… there are different kinds of amphetemines just like there are different kinds of antihysthemines and anti-depressants) made specifically for those with that diagnoses, that chemical imbalance, and that degree of severity.
My point to those who use Adderal and other ADD meds without having the neurobiological problem:
Why take this drug? You don’t have it. You are putting your brain and body at risk. As PT Cal stated above, you’re at risk for heart faliure… That is just ONE risk. You are also creating a situation in your head that you may not be able to CHEMICALLY support. Go look it up if you don’t believe me. Find a credited source and read. Like I said. YOU DON’T HAVE IT. Taking Adderal et. al when you have not be diagnosed is stupid no matter if it helps you study better…
Honestly, would you take an anti-psychotic drug made for those with schizophrenia cuz it’s supposed to make you, ahem… (to the naked eye) “zone out”, if you had no idea WHAT the drug actually does in a schizopheric brain and could do to your NORMAL brain?? (To avoid any unnecessary “you don’t know what you’re talking about” comments, I’m inserting a disclaimer: I am being facetious in my reference to the effects of that drug. I know perfectly well what it is and what it does.)
Do you REALLY think taking a drug NOT meant for you will have the exact same effects on you as it does for the one afflicted and you will be entirely safe from any negative effects?
If you do then I hope nature takes it course and you don’t make it to reproduce and pass on your utter stupidity.
Those without the NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEM who take the drug thinking it is fun or keeps them focused for school etc. are not only doing something without self-education, but are selfishly using our problem for their benefit.
And those who ARE afflicted and SELLING? WTF…. really? you should have better self-respect…
Disgustingly unethical.

I've taken Adderall, dextroamphetamine, and various salt combos (Ritalin, etc) recreational and as a study aid for at least a decade – I'm currently pushing 30 and a grad student in an PhD/MD program. On top of this, I've used a ton of other drugs since childhood…
As an experienced AND educated user, I have to say – for most people who are not into seriously messing with their mind, Adderall (or Dex, et al) is like using a sledgehammer to etch glass. That is, it's a potent drug – NO different from meth in any appreciable way – that has serious, long term consequences for users (including those who use it on-label for ADD). It is neurotoxic (kills yer brain) and will rapidly desensitize neurotransmitter receptors (leading to a tolerance for your own, naturally released neurotransmitters). Crashing sucks, and breaking a habit sucks more.
After a regular habit, plan on about seven (7) years for your brain to fully regenerate / regulate itself. However, anyone on amphetamines will perform some tasks better (math, white-collar grinding, repetitive physical tasks) in the short term.
For a more sustainable and healthy brain-enhancement regimen, try Piracetam (or another -racetam) along with Bacopa extract and a choline source like choline citrate or DMAE (there are many). There's no crash or noteworthy side-effects, you become significantly more sensitized to other drugs (hallucinogens and stimulants in particular), and these drugs actually act as neuroprotectives KEEPING YOUR BRAIN HEALTHY instead of burning it out in a short fit of mechanical productivity.
Of course, the usual things for brain health apply too – get sleep, eat well, excessive, have fulfilling sex, take a fish-oil supplement, and so on.
Miss Hoodoo says:

Also, isn't it funny that all the "imz high on addy right nowz" people don't use line breaks. Judging by writing style, I presume 1) they're not doing too well in school despite their enhancement, and 2) that's probably because they get sidetracked when doing work and spend 6 or 7 hours rewriting the same paragraph before they get sidetracked and start obsessively cleaning a single shelf. I have experience with this, let me tell you…
Be healthy, people, and use drugs for enhancement NOT as an ultimately counterproductive shortcut. If you're half-braindead (or just kinda stupid and/or dismotivated) no drug is going to fix you. Get some discipline. Value your education. Actually TRY, rather than partying and trying to play a crappy colelge-town version of MTV Spring Break the night before finals.
Then, when you can function on your own, start taking enhancement drugs in a mindful and informed program. Success will be yours.
Oh – one last thing – for those who feel that chemical enhancement is some kind of "cheating", please look at the moron advocates posting here… Yeah, they're failing their classes. The bar in American universities is set so low it's hilarious & shameful at once, especially at the undergraduate level; given that fact, these kids are clearly NOT competition for a reasonably motivated person of average-or-better intelligence.
Bacon says:

Claire, you write a lot for someone who knows not-that-much.
Adderall is quite similar to meth, and has the same on-label use. One can be legitimately prescribed methamphetamine for ADD/ADHD, as well as all the other on-label uses for amphetamines, like narcolepsy.
Second, your blind and silly equation of law=ethics is mind boggling. Just because the law says X does not mean that X is ethical; there is vibrant and ongoing public discourse on the ethics of enhancement on the Web and in academic journals. there is more than one way to interpret Hippocrates. Please add some depth here…
I agree with you about addiction, though – amphetamines desensitize your brain in very specific ways that can lead to tolerance, or at least reduced function that can be covered-up by continued application of the drug.
Drop the puritanical / schoolmarmy lecturing about right and wrong, and we'll be square.

I'm just saying; i've taken adderoll, which was in fact perscribed to me & I did excel in my school work, cleaned my apartment daily, cooked (althought i didnt keep a strong appetite) i'd make myself eat, and heck I even did charity work for the nursing home. I was always focused and alert and was quite impressed and happy with myself. I slept at night and had no problems what so ever.
But heres the funny part…
Two months later, the doctor informs us he misdiagnosed me. I was then put on xanex for a mood stabalizer, & failed 3 classes, slept constantly, and was at one point suicidal; so he put me on adavant which helps for the most part and i mean, im doing better in school too simply because ill also drink a five hour energy.
I just think its funny how a drug, I wasnt perscribed to, helped me?
either the doctors aren't being trained as well as they should, or adderol's not such a bad thing afterall in my opinion.

to the author, you really arent well informed, adderall is an amphetamine…. ever heard of meth, this is precursor to that. You shouldnt be abusing it if you do not have add, i do and people who abuse it make doctors more skeptic to prescribe it to people who actually benefit from it, adderall doesnt speed up your heart rate neccesarily if your add, it controls your dopamine levels as well as many other chemicals in your brain, add and adhd is due to a chemical imbalance, this imbalance also means people like me are susceptible to clinical depression as dopamine is the happy chemical, some people acutally use the drug to FOCUS and try to be normal and catch up to the people abusing it to write twenty page college essays. without it our attention spans are minimal and we do extremely poorly at school regardless of how hard we try or understand the subject because we physically cannot sit stll long enough to study, seriously stop abusing this and dont promote the unprescribed use of this, this is used to treat a NEUROLOGICAL CHEMICAL IMBALANCE THIS CAN KILL YOU IF YOU ABUSE IT.
Tim says:

I agree, I'm prescribed it. I snorted in once, but won't again. It doesn't make me speed or high, even when abused, it helps me focus. I feel like I should feel, but I guess can't without it. I have been diagnosed with ADD, but I also have a type of depression called dysthymia, I'm on my first week of taking aderall, I was on concerta(methylphenidate) before, and I like aderall alot more, but it doesn't seem quite as potent. I don't recommend abusing this drug, or any drug. As someone who was once cannabis dependent, has tried coke, shrooms and has drank volumes of liquor that would have killed many other people, take my word for it, being sober is way more fun. Do you have clinical depression? I have a type of it and it sucks. What milligram are you prescribed?

I Iike weed, and funny thing is it's never killed anyone, has been shown to kill cancer cells and is considered safest drug known to man. However it's a scheduel I drug, whereas cocaine and methanphetamines are Scheduel II. I would be happy and enjoy life more if the retards making these classifications and laws could figure out this basic shit. Product A is highly addictive, contains rat poison and arsenic, kills a half million Americans every year, can cause heart problems, lung cancer, mouth cancer, skin cancer, breast cancer, bowel cancer, emphasema, and if you use it for a long period of time it is 99.8% sure to kill you. (oh and it's legal) Product B has never been attributed to a single death in recorded history, Is therapeutic to those with glaucoma, cancer, MS, migranes, asthma sufferers, anorexic, bulemic; is considered by British surgeon general to be safer than tylenol, provides a feeling of euphoria, creates a deeper sense of appreciation for life and surroundings, has been proven in studies that are banned from being revealed to the mass public, to kill cancer cells, prevent cancer growth and leaves healthy cells unaltered. ( and oh yeah is Illegal!) Which would you choose?
Unfortunately, most chose A. Corporations take in billions in revenue every year from the death of Americans, while other Americans are arrested every 38 seconds for violating the cannabis laws, providing the court system with hundreds of billion in revanue, profiting from Americans being incarcerated. Tell me, do you still trust and love your government? Unless you are in the judicial business, you are being fucked as hard as the government can without drawing blood, and creating uproar. The British don't take shit like this lying down like Americans do, look in the news, they are revolting. When are you mindless pussy Americans going put down your motherfucking iphones that are so briliantly distracting you, and realize there's a huge institution pounding you up the ass? The banks are bailed out by your money, Schools across the country are facing enormous budget cuts and prison populations are growing faster than than the national debt. Guess who's paying for a ceo's bonus, taking out high interest loans for school and being handcuffed and thrown in jail? It's middle class people like you, and you know what? you only have a matter of time until it's you. Belive me, or don't, you'll see soon enough. Oh and at the mean time Mexicans cross the boarder, grow weed on our national parks and sell it to you, and you get arrested for it, while Mexico takes in over a half trillion dollars a year from drugs you want that were grown on our soil and guess what? they have enough money to own their government… versus visa versa. Dear Bacon,
Might I gently suggest that if you are going to take a position so highly critical of someone's writing you reread your own comments with punctuation and capitalization in mind? You do lose credibility when replacing the word 'and' with a mathematical symbol in prose. Failing to begin a sentence with a capital letter is egregious. I won't even begin to discuss the emdash situation.
You see, dear writer, pride goeth before the fall. Try to be a little nicer to your fellow authors. If you think the article could be written better, then write your own article on the topic.
Personally, I thought the author did a fine job with her article on her blog.

It would seem he feels he needs to inform the author of the fact that meth too falls into the amphetamine category, as she must not be aware of this. But I'm quite sure the author well aware of this fact. Do us a favor Ronnie, feel free to share your opinion with as many people as you'd like, but please do so in the form of an opinion. The manner in which you assert your thoughts would suggest you are an expert, and though I can tell you are not, many people out there may not have that same ability to scrutinize your comments. And while you may have your own opinion regarding this particular substance, perhaps there can be such a thing as the responsible use of Adderall outside the realm of ADD and ADHD.
