Disney is far better than the incest promoting Ben 10 that is all the rage and on TV after school. Nickelodeon isn't much better either. People forget that.

I think all you guys are right. Disney is NOT the pink fairy fuzzy happy times image that they put out on the market (which parents are more often than not quick to gobble up). They have put out some movies that have implications that are really kind of horrible (The Little Mermaid with its blatant segregation and racism (speciesism?), or Beauty and the Beast with the abusive relationship).

But some of the stuff kids are watching now is just atrocious. I've been watching TV with my little cousins over the past few weeks, and it's really mindboggling. I'm not saying that all the Nicktoons I grew up on (I love you, Ren and Stimpy!) were wonderful enlightening educational quality children's programing.

But as a kid, when I watched WHATEVER I was watching, my mom watched it with me. We would talk about the movie or show and giggle and laugh and cry. And when it was done, we'd talk about it some more. I KNEW this stuff was fiction, I KNEW that wasn't how the real world worked, because my mother told me. Heck, I still have difficulty holding up my suspension of disbelief NOW, at twenty years of age.

I'm not saying that Disney doesn't have a lot of work to do. But you can't just dump a kid infront of a movie and leave them. Maybe parents need to do a little work of their own.

Really? Disney movies are 'exactly what every little girl and boy wants to watch'? How about what their empowered, enlightened mothers want them to watch? How about films with strong female role models, whose sole aspiration isn't finding prince charming? What about more diverse and less bigoted characters? What about a lead female that doesn't need to be rescued by a strong, aggressive male?

Oh please, Disney cartoons aren't half as bad, and damaging as some of the crap out there. Their movies are works of art, and frankly exactly what every little girl (and boy) wants to watch. The few messed up things don't even equate to the amounts of garbage kids watch daily now a days.

Love it, you're absolutely right. Disney as a company is a far cry from their fuzzy image.

I agree, the racism and sexism in their cartoons is awe-inducing. Its all warm and fuzzy watching Ariel when you're five, but then you grow up and realize how backwards all of their cartoons are- the helpless, stereotyped female searching for her prince to make her life complete. Please.
