While you may be tempted to fill that dormroom mini fridge with beer and only beer, there are going to be times in college (like breakfast) when Miller Lite just won’t suffice. So, you may want to stock that fridge with other necessities to get you through the day. You don’t have much room in that shoebox they call a fridge so you must choose your items wisely.
Below is my list of the five MUST HAVES that got me through those hungry, fun and crazy college days. And don’t worry; there is still plenty of room for the beer.
1. Ramen noodles. While not the best food for your figure (sodium overload and absolutely no nutritional value), it’s great on a budget (you can get something like 10 boxes for $1.99). Throw in some veggies and you can have a quick and cheap stir-fry.
2. Salsa. This condiment spices up casseroles, nachos (which are a PERFECT drunk time/late night snack) and even omelets and eggs.
3. Velveeta. Great for sandwiches, mac & cheese (an essential college meal) and melting into a bowl for dipping animal crackers (You think I’m nuts, but just TRY it!).
4. Brita. I never thought this was necessary until I got to college and realized that natural tap water is filled with some seriously nasty gunk. Nothin’ that’ll kill ya or anything, but still, not the best stuff to put into your body (as I’m currently slugging back a vodka/seltzer – ha!). You can get an easy maintenance one at Target, Walmart and other similar stores.
5. Red Bull. Everyone has those nights where they need to pump up and rally. Red Bull, otherwise known as speed in a can, will do the trick. Chug one of these guys for a night at the library, or a night on the town; it will get you through and leave you feeling fantastic.
Those are my five little must-haves. What are yours?

Mine was fruit and tv dinners. Other things that didn’t need refrigeration was tea and oatmeal.

RANCH DRESSING. it’s good on pizza, good with veggies..it plays many roles.
TUNA. it’s awesome bc it’s filling, yums, and full of important stuff like proteins. get those tuna cups and store them in the fridge…i think cold tuna tastes way better than warm cabinet tuna.

pesto sauce. all you do is mix it with olive oil and you have a great healthy sauce for some pasta.
my rice and rice steamer – rice steamers are 20 dollars. rice is 99 cents a pound. pays for itself. plus, rice steamers shut themselves off when they are done, which means you put the rice in and come back later and its cooked itself (easier than minute rice, great when you have work to do).
popcorn seeds and air-popper popcorn maker – once again a good investment. popcorn seeds are 1.99 for a good-sized bag. popcorn comes out in about a minute, and since its homemade, is a healthier snack than the ones that come loaded with sodium and calories (even adding butter and salt like i do, its still less than what it would normally come with).
bisquick. good for everything, need it for my pancakes and waffles (i brought my belgian waffle maker too lol but thats also only like 20 bucks and saves you money over time).
mountain dew. i need it to live.
the cheap espresso maker. i know ill need that, and that way im not buying coffe, so saving money again.
that pasta thats tri-colored and has more nutrients in it.
nutritional yeast – thats for making my vegan cheese, but ive made it for non-vegan friends in the past who liked it and its really high in protein and vitamins, so its a good college ingredient.
silk mocha – ive only been able to find it in whole foods, but most health food stores will get it for you if you ask. its a coffee-chocolate drink made with soymilk, and tastes better cold, is absolutely delicious, packs in the protein and calcium, and is like having starbucks ready to drink in your refridgerator. (to the person on college candy who writes the articles where they try vegan food – i suggest writing about this drink next).
pudding mix
gotta have the tea – for both a hot cup in winter or a southern-like cold brew
this isnt food, but you need all the medicines – excedrin, naproxen, cold medicine whatever – its good to be prepared for all ailments especially when going away

Red bull is bad for your heart. I stay away from that stuff.
I have water. I alway stick a few in my backpack if I am going to be on campus for a while.
I always keep popsicles in the freezer as it’s a good sugar pick me up and it’s not too bad for you. I also have mini rice cakes with the chocolate or caramel drizzle on them; they’re a great snack!

Yeah, I agree Red Bull isn’t the greatest, but the sugarfree is a lot less harmful than a lot of other drinks and pick-me-ups.

This isn’t for eating but for odor purposes-a box of baking soda.
Trust me please. My roommate and I found out the hard way. Not even 6 washings could take the smell out of her fridge.

Well i definitely agree about the ramen and brita parts; tap water isn’t really clean while buying lots of bottled water is quite a no-no on your income, brita filtered water is pretty decent and you just have to replace the filter every couple of months; i like to eat ramen for the breakfast or whatever meal that i really don’t want to walk to dining halls or outside campus to eat.
Red Bull however is not a good choice for me; while i drink it; its not my first or second choice for an energy drink as the taste isn’t that great(for me); i prefer Nos or Bawls for my energy drinks, they are actually the only two energy drinks that work for me and their taste is pretty decent; Nos is kinda orange-flavored while Bawls tastes like fruity sprite.

Bread really fills me up an I can freeze for as long as I need. There are some excellent bakeries that have fresh bread for 99 cents or day olds for 50.

I always have peanut butter. Great for quick protein, or awesome on crackers or rice cakes for a midnight snack.
Poptarts, ramen, applesauce with Flat Earth berry fruit chips (trust me, it’s amazing for breakfast), lunchables. . .

My dorm food/fridge staples? Hmmm…
-First off, I agree with the baking soda comment. Nothing is worse than opening your fridge at the end of the semester and smelling the funk of left-over casserole your roommate put in there. (It happened…)
-Red Bull. It doesn’t really work as an energy drink for me, but I like the taste of it. I like to sip on one every few days or so.
-Water! Whether bottled or tap…just have it.
-Some Crystal Light to add to that water to make it a bit less bland. (I recommend the rasberry lemonade flavor.)
-Ramen.
-Poptarts (the whole wheat kind)
-Tea.
-Coffee (It’s my liquid Jesus.)
-And last, but certainly not least, I love having a jar of mangos and some mandarin oranges. Those are so awesome to snack on.
