I cooked a lot at my dorm (which was apartment-styled with a kitchen) freshman year, and will again sophomore year. Here's what I used most:

Pasta and pasta sauce - spaghetti is super easy and good

canned soups - but test some out first. not all are created equal.

eggs - easy to boil or make scrambled eggs in the morning, only takes a few minutes

bread for toast - if you have a toaster, sandwich maker or oven. otherwise, bread for sandwiches in general. (depending where you are, sometimes you need to get it in the fridge. my school is in such a humid place that everything, even cereal, goes stale really soon.)

cheese like said above

Juice (either 100% or veggie) - If you really don't have time to eat in the morning, at least have some juice to keep you going through the morning. But avoid juice drinks, which are full of sugar

a bar of chocolate - for, well, you know.

agreed with Brita filter pitcher

fruits (i put mine in the fridge, it was too humid not to. bananas would only last a day out of the fridge) - as snacks instead of junk food. also good for after night classes when you're hungry but shouldn't eat something fattening.

milk for cereal

ready meals - i bought those sometimes, like if it's already seasoned pasta or rice, or potato wedges, or chicken patties or something. good for when you're either too lazy to walk two blocks to the caf (as was in my situation) or too busy with work.

my parents would also send me like frozen dumplings and stuff, which I couldn't find in the stores near my school. All you have to do is pack them vacuum-sealed and they can be sent in a box in the mail.

I took every opportunity I got to cook for myself and ended up losing 15-20 lbs freshman year.

My dorm food/fridge staples? Hmmm...

-First off, I agree with the baking soda comment. Nothing is worse than opening your fridge at the end of the semester and smelling the funk of left-over casserole your roommate put in there. (It happened...)

-Red Bull. It doesn't really work as an energy drink for me, but I like the taste of it. I like to sip on one every few days or so.

-Water! Whether bottled or tap...just have it.

-Some Crystal Light to add to that water to make it a bit less bland. (I recommend the rasberry lemonade flavor.)

-Ramen.

-Poptarts (the whole wheat kind)

-Tea.

-Coffee (It's my liquid Jesus.)

-And last, but certainly not least, I love having a jar of mangos and some mandarin oranges. Those are so awesome to snack on.

Well i definitely agree about the ramen and brita parts; tap water isn't really clean while buying lots of bottled water is quite a no-no on your income, brita filtered water is pretty decent and you just have to replace the filter every couple of months; i like to eat ramen for the breakfast or whatever meal that i really don't want to walk to dining halls or outside campus to eat.

Red Bull however is not a good choice for me; while i drink it; its not my first or second choice for an energy drink as the taste isn't that great(for me); i prefer Nos or Bawls for my energy drinks, they are actually the only two energy drinks that work for me and their taste is pretty decent; Nos is kinda orange-flavored while Bawls tastes like fruity sprite.

This isn't for eating but for odor purposes-a box of baking soda.

Trust me please. My roommate and I found out the hard way. Not even 6 washings could take the smell out of her fridge.
