When whoever went and invented cheerleaders, they deemed that the outfits would be cute, most likely revealing, and bouncy. Cheerleaders are athletes, no doubt, but anyone who’s watched them jump and dance around has also noted that most cheerleaders are hot. That’s their appeal. Hot girls who flip around in short skirts and give people something to get “excited” about.
Seems like a school in Idaho missed that memo.
The Idaho Vandals cheerleaders from the University of Idaho were recently forced to dip into their “spirit squad fund” and buy new outfits — because their previous game time attire (crop tops and tiny skirts) was deemed too revealing.
From the Herald Tribune: “A number of fans were concerned that the uniforms were inappropriate,” said Bruce Pitman, dean of students. “To be fair, there were a number of fans who liked them.”
Of course there were a number of fans who liked them! Who doesn’t enjoy half-naked girls? Most likely, the “number of concerned fans” who weren’t so happy about the outfits were either intimidated or totally at a loss with their own sexuality.
Unless those Idaho cheerleaders were forced into dressing provocatively, there was no reason to go after them. These girls are college students — adults. If Ms. Uptight Mom or Mr. Nervous Dad didn’t want their younger children being exposed to bare midrifts…they should probably consider shutting off the television and computer forever. They should also keep their children away from beaches. And pools. Better yet, why not just blindfold them until they’re ready to get married?
That’ll solve it.

I think they have a point. I mean yeah, like you say, they are going to see it somewhere else for sure. But that doesn’t mean the school has to be the place they see it.
I for one, am ready to see America return to a more modest time. I think things are getting a little too…. revealing.

How are these outfits any worse than what other cheerleaders are wearing? If we are going to bring this up as an issue, maybe we should modify what ALL cheerleaders are wearing. America views cheerleaders as sex objects and always have. We need to make bigger changes than just this school if we want to change that.

are you guys familiar with idaho? there are TONS of mormons there who draw exception with improper dress.

But Idaho University isn’t Mormon, is it? I doubt an influx of Mormons were given the power to overturn something like this…
What do these people who have such a problem with the outfits do when they go to the beach, put a hand over their eyes and sit miserably in the sun??

I was predisposed, frankly, to rule on the conservative side, but those uniforms are fine. I would have no problem for my daughter to wear something like that, and I’m an Evangelical Christian who has a meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ. I don’t speak for Him, but I just can’t imagine Jesus having a problem with that uniform. (Then again, he created people who wear penisgourds, so there…)

Ironic because this is coming from Idaho, the most conservative state in the union. It’s the religious right battling sexism/patriarchy for control.
I say go whole hog and call them prostitutes instead of cheerleaders: http://tinyurl.com/5c7d5c

I just don’t see it…I want to think they are slutty but I just don’t see WTF the problem is…it looks like every other cheerleader/dance outfit I have seen.

The article also says that some of the girls felt the outfits were unflattering and uncomfortable. It doesn’t sound like they were forced into dressing provocatively OR changing the uniform, but it does sound like there was a general agreement that less skimpy uniforms were better.
It looks kind of like the girl on the far left is trying to keep her skirt from riding up, for example.

I don’t understand society today. A bikini at the pool or beach is fine. But this is worse? This is worse than school violence? North America needs to get over its fear with skin and the human body. I hardly see where it comes from from religious views either since clothes are literally the work of the devil. (Adam and Eve are naked until the devil comes along).
Just seems that when you allow people more freedoms there is less associated crime.
In Europe, more lenient drinking laws, less drinking problems. More relaxed nudity laws, less problems with pedophiles and the like.

What are cheerleaders supposed to wear? They need freedom of movement.
Their clothes should allow them to complete their ‘goals’. Which are; 1) Perform athletics, 2) look good. They’re pretty much wearing the same or more than sprinters. What’s next, sprinters are forced to wear full body suits? And then they’ll have to deal with any crotch bulges, so perhaps some sort of device to eliminate that ‘grossness’ and ‘afront to human decency’ as any tight fitting swimwear would be judged at a beach.

I am still a little stunned by this – all these girls are 18 – I can understand why there is concern about skimpy outfits for high school cheerleaders, but they just need to get with the program for college cheer.

I am a student here at the University of Idaho and I’m pretty pissed that the uni’s were pulled! I agree with Tyler in saying that they are no different than female sprinters wearing a sports bra and little spandex shorts! I mean if our team isn’t going to win any games at least lets us have some girls running around half naked to look at! Cuz besides that there’s really not any reason to go to the games…lol
And this whole mormon thing is irrelevant! The skankiest girls in my hs were mormon and of the 3 that got prego, 2 WERE MORMON!! WTF!!!

I’m like several others–I don’t see what the big deal is. The funny thing is that about six or seven years ago when I was a sophomore in high school, the cheerleaders uniforms were very similar to those the Idaho girls are wearing. Really the only difference was the tops were slightly longer (and I do mean, VERY slightly) and they were different colors. Yep, that’s about it. And nobody had a problem then with a bunch of sixteen and seventeen year old girls wearing them.

Before you all go making obnoxious stereotypes, please understand that Latah County is one of the two LIBERAL counties in Idaho. And Idaho is not the most conservative state in the union, Oklahoma is. And if you’re going to make stereotypes about Idaho based on mormon population, take a look at Utah.

If it was indecent to show skin and sexuality then why are we not covered in fur like any other animal? Humans are Beautiful sexual creature’s and we like to show it. That’s just the way we’re made…Human nature…that is all.
