Not so simple. Ivanka conversion will not be easy. The rabbi that they selected is an orthodox rabbi and she will have to prove that she actually believes in Judaism for her to convert. The real problem is going to be that actually in orthodox Judaism conversion for love is very problematic to be diplomatic (for precisely the reasons mentioned above) so this high-profile conversion is going to be interesting.

However, I do know of many cases of a person converting to Judaism in order to marry someone and they remained committed and observant Jews for their entire life (well so far anyway )

There is a difference between the Islam/Christian example though. Certain streams of Islam consider the rest of the world as infidels. If your fiance believed this, then it would be unacceptable for you to be Christian, married or now. In Judaism, we have no problem with other religions. There is nothing wrong with being Christian, Muslim etc. We do have a technical problem with marrying another faith, but this is about keeping the religion alive rather than belittling other religious beliefs.

A person should NEVER be forced to follow a particular religion just to get married!!! I’m Christian, and my now-ex boyfriend turned abusive when I repeatedly refused to convert to Islam just to marry him. He thought that since some of his friends got their weak-willed women to sell their souls to have a man in their bed, that he could break me down too. (That’s nothing against Islam. I’d feel just as strongly about someone being forced into Christianity or any other religion for that matter. Selling out your religion like that seems to me like selling your soul to the devil.)

Point is, your religious beliefs, or lack of, are YOUR OWN, and should not be used as a bargaining point for marriage. Everyone deserves a partner who will love and accept them as is, and never force them to give up something that is such a fundamental part of their lives!

Now, if you yourself choose to study your partner’s faith and decide on your own to convert, then that’s your business.

According to a friend of the Kushner family Ivanka’s refusal at first to convert was the reason that she and Jared broke-up in April.

This makes it’s obvious that the only reason Ivanka is converting is because of Jared and his family. And Ivanka’s in love so she will do anything to please her man. It’s sickening. If Jared wanted a Jewish woman he should have only dated within his religion. It’s so ridicoulous and what happens if they get a divorce? Will Ivanka go back to being a Gentile?

…Maybe she actually believes in it and wasn’t introduced to the religion in any depth till she met Jared? I can understand converting for a man if you actually believe it, but if not, its stupid.

Militant agnostic: I don’t know and you don’t either. No way I’d convert to something I don’t believe in. If religion’s your thing, you sure as fck better be taking it seriously.
