Another thing to keep in mind is whether your State prohibits or restricts pepper spray. Michigan, for example, only allows pepper spray to be up to a 2% concentration, which is pretty diluted. Likewise, stun guns are an excellent self-defense weapon, but they are illegal in a few States.

An alternative to pepper spray and stun guns are personal alarms. Like pepper spray they are available in keychain form and often come with a combined light/flashlight. I agree that women need to carry some sort of personal protection-pepper spray at a minimum. At a very minimum, carry a pepper spray at all times. Practice with it, become familiar with it and USE IT when needed.

My father always said that if you get attacked, dig your nails in deep, and use your teeth. Bite out flesh if you can.

That way, if you wind up dead, they can track the DNA.

Carrying your car/house keys spread btw your fingers makes a good clawing weapon.
