Fashionably Techy: Five Video Games Girls Can Play

files.jpg[Like a magpie, you gravitate towards things that are shiny: cell phones, TVs, anything that allows you to play Rock Band. But just because you love ‘em doesn’t mean you know much about ‘em. That’s where we come in. Every week we will be highlighting the best, coolest and shiniest in technology. Consider us your personal Geek Squad.

And let us tell ya; with CC on your side, geek has never looked so chic.]

So your sig other is totally geeked about Punch Out coming to the Wii because it was like his favorite game ever when he was five. And while he’s standing there showing you screen shots you’re thinking “WTF?”

If the only game character you can readily recognize is Mario ( I will also take Sonic as an acceptable substitute), or if the one and only time you played a video game you quit because you “just didn’t get it,” then I have a list for you.

So what if you’re trapped in the eighties of video games , I’ve got five games for you to play that will catapult you into the 21st century.

1) Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii)

You’re a little intimidated by all the new buttons and the lack of wires on the controllers. Freaking out already? It’s ok, calm down. Who’s that? Oh, why it’s your old friend Mario! And who’s with him? Sonic! It’s like 1992 all over again and you’re in charge of this video game war.

The Wii’s installment into the Smash Bros family is an accessible game even to those that don’t play games. The premise is simple and addictive: just knock all others off the screen by any means necessary. Whether it be with your own special innate talents or the random poke ball. A fun and easy way to waste some time.

2) Bioshock (X-Box 360)

This was one of the most anticipated games for the 360. It’s a first person shooter with an engaging storyline that will keep you coming back for more. If that’s not enough, the game itself is a beauty to look at with great graphics. The weapon system is varied and innovative.

And the best part for you noobies: there’s no multiplayer function. This is usually seen as a downside, but in your case it means that you don’t have to worry about getting fragged by your boyfriend.

3) Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, Xbox 360)

I like to do bad things sometimes. GTA lets me do them without the fear of legal repercussions. Which is good because jail scares me. Steal cars, beat people up, run drugs – whatever you want. Rise up the ranks until you’re biggest, baddest MF out there.

In this game you don’t have to worry about wasting time or messing up too much. There are a million missions and things to complete, or you can just drive around and cause havoc until you get the swing of things. No pressure.

The game play is pretty much comparable to the others in the series. It’s easy to learn but may take some getting used to for those who don’t normally play games. Of course I’m still waiting for the GTA game that features a female main character. . .

4) Little Big Planet (PS3)

When you’re tired of smacking ho’s around and stealing fast cars then you can take a vacation in the playground that is Little Big Planet. It’s no Katimari or Pikmen but as far as cute ‘n quirky goes, it’s a win.

In this game you control little people and help them build their world, or just explore the one already around you.

The game starts off small limiting your options to only three types of game play, but as you go along you will unlock new things and will become able to use the multiplayer sharing features.

The game is very user-friendly and there is a tutorial level to help you get aquatinted with the game play and the world that you’ll be inhabiting. A fun and possibly addictive little game.

5) Eternal Sonata (Xbox 360, PS3)

RPGs are addictive because it’s like living a story through your controller and TV. Maybe interactive movie is a better way to describe it. Eternal Sonata is no different. This is a visually stunning RPG with engaging characters. And bonus if you enjoy music because it plays a huge role in this game.

The fighting system is a combination of action and turn based fighting. Meaning you wait for your turn to attack. It’s very flashy and keeps what can become an otherwise monotonous aspect of the game fun and exciting.

The story is simple to follow but well worth it. It’s a beautiful way to break into RPGing for someone who has never played or just hasn’t in a long time.

*Extra Bonus!* You should also try a fighting game like Soul Caliber IV. Fighting games are fun even when you’re not feeling aggressive (and especially fun when you are). I suggest you practice while your boy isn’t around and get really good. Next time he ticks you off, play against him in front of his friends. He’ll never live down the shame.

Don’t ever let anybody say girls aren’t good at video games. We’re good at everything.

I would like to add Mortal Kombat for Wii… you dont need to know how to do anything other than shake the controls and you can beat your opponent!

Any girl can play video games, there’s never a need for androcentricism.

Anyway, Wario Smooth Moves is the funnest game ever for the Wii. You sometimes look like a fool doing some of the moves, but you’ll laugh the entire time. And you get such a workout, damn!

And Call of Duty 4 on the 360 is probably one of the best games, ever. It’s insanely fun online, I can’t get enough. The story mode is kinda weak though. One of the funniest things to do is to play on the Containment map w/ a couple of friends on muliplayer, with knives only-it gets intense lol. I’m so excited COD5 comes out in a few weeks!

And I’d like to see anybody play Bioshock and not piss themselves from fear.

Bioshock is definitely a delicious game. Just don’t play it at 2 a.m. while you’re by yourself. It’s like watching a horror movie but all the scary stuff is happening to you. I’ve definitely scored some bonus points with my guy friends for having played it, though.

Some other games I would add to the list are The Orange Box, a steal at $60 because it comes with 5 amazing games; Oblivion, because the world is HUGE and if killing people isn’t your thing, you can at least ride around on a unicorn; Viva Pinata, an adorable, happy, and at times slightly twisted game that saved me from my Bioshock-induced terror; and for those who enjoy oldies-but-goodies there’s Shadow of the Colossus and Star Wars: Battlefront.

I bought my 360 because I knew that one day GTA IV would come out and I preordered that badboy, it is one of the funnest games ever. My roommate won’t play anything with me but she’ll watch me play GTA and she loves the story.

    Bioshock, scary ass game.

Obvi awesome game, Mario Kart Wii or DS, nothing difficult about it but so much fun.

And FFXIII anyone? Seriously, that game will blow your MIND when it comes out.

And a big hells yeah to SC2, RA3, and Diablo 3. I’m also excited for GW2 and The Sims 3.

Oh and I adore Fable 2. It’s so awesome. Halo was fun. WoW I could NOT get into. Force Unleashed was also fun while it lasted.

I would most certainly recommend Oblivion for the Xbox or PC! It is my favorite game ever! The world is huge and the possibilities for what you can do are practically endless. So much fun!

I also can’t wait to play Bioshock. I’ve wanted that game since it came out and I hope to get it soon.

Final Fantasy fan to the end.

Though I am quite partial to a bit of GTA3/San Andreas, WoW, Diablo 2, Starcraft, and Deus Ex. It’s either PC or Playstation for me, personally (but yes, I do judge any and all who use any other console).

But at heart, I’m a vintage gamer gal. Point Blank (PS1), Monkey Hero (PS1), Pharaoh (PC)…that mostly 2D sort of thing. Damn I love that stuff. Go on, I /dare/ you to make fun of that.

I’m surprised (and happy) that this list actually has GAMES! The last article I read (and it was an actual, serious article) about games for girls included a bunch of stupid dress-up, cooking games. I was like “WTF?”

I’m impressed! I see more and more women playing video games – young *and* old. Keep it up, girls!

    Oh God. Half-Life 2.

Actually, anything in the Orange Box.

    EVIDENCE:

You want women portrayed well in video games? Chell and Alyx are both kickass AND wear real clothes.

Looking for an adrenaline rush that will set your hair on fire? We Don’t Go To Ravenholm, folks.

Not quite in the mood for zombie fare? Portal is your delicious cake.

Want to trash your friends, but so sick of Halo you could puke? Team Fortress 2.

Really, really into hot nerd boys with guns? GORDON EFFIN’ FREEMAN, LADIES. God he sets my panties ablaze. XD

(Oh, and I may have a horrifying addiction to Guild Wars that I just can’t shake. My poor li’l monk has worn tracks in the rock of the Fissure of Woe.)

imo there need to be more girls out there for first person shooters that -AREN’T- part of an all-girl clan. Being a former all-girl clan co-leader, I can say that girls who get raised in those clans get pretty sheltered and get the wrong impression about other guy gamers. Oh, and also…I’m sick of seeing the cult that follows one singular girl gamer as well. I’ve seen enough of it on Xbox Live. But hey, this is just a random rant :p

But good for girls for playing more video games. I approve of this post, for sure.

I am totally hooked on World of Warcraft :P I stared playing it actually because my boyfriend played it so much that I was ready to make him choose between the computer and me, but as a last resort to find some middle ground, I picked up the game too. It’s awesome. 2 years later and I’m still playing (with the boy AND the game, LOL)

college and gaming are very synonymous, when it applies to video gaming even more so. women that play beerpong, etc., rock. women playing video games, is however very attractive.

HL2 rocks so bad but I can never compete with the top. Of all games I’ve played, WoW and Perfect World International has the most girl players I’ve seen.

to each your own really, everyone has their own different tastes, even us guys. Some of us like guitar hero, and some of us don’t.

Speaking of video games, I know guitar hero is old, but why hasn’t anyone mentioned that? It’s the funnest game to play!
