Welcome to the White House, President Obama!

t1wideobama01cnn.jpg

It is one hell of an evening. It does not matter which candidate you supported today, we should all be proud of our country and ourselves. Not only did we elect the first black president in American history, but we came out in record numbers to do so.

Our demographic – the “apathetic young people” – stood up and made a choice. We campaigned, we were engaged like never before, and today we voted.

This country is in serious need of a change, and while both candidates were more than capable of bringing that change, Barack Obama has been elected the 44th President of the United States. I know I am not the only one who is excited for him to take office. And I know that his daughters, who are definitely stoked about getting that new puppy, aren’t the only ones excited for him to take office. This country as a whole is ready for Barack Obama.

I could feel it when I was watching the returns. I could feel it when the bar I was in erupted in cheers. I could feel it as I drove back to my house and heard people screaming on the streets.

Today was an awesome day and the next four years promise to be the same.

I’ve never seen the kind of celebrating I saw tonight as the numbers came in. Hundreds of people (and I go to a small university) flooded the campus coffee shop for the student-organized poll watching party. Every time Obama won another state, the room shook with the screams and cheers of joy, and when they announced that Barack Obama would be the new president of the United States of America, the cheering in the room was deafening. There were tears of joy, dancing and chanting.

We canvassed. We phonebanked. We flyered. We voted. We became the change we wanted to see. I’ve never been so proud to be an American, and moreover a young American, than I am tonight.

I live in Canada, and I was in class when the win was announced. We were having campus parties to watch the polls and I could hear people running down the halls outside my classroom screaming and celebrating that Obama had won!

It’s amazing how a country’s election could have such a major effect on so many other countries an peoples.

Yeah, it’s the COMPLETE opposite down here in South Alabama.

I’ve never heard the kind of racism and hatred coming out of educated college students’ mouths (along with some of my my family and co-workers) that I’ve heard since last night.

It breaks my hear that people are actually hoping he gets assassinated. The deep south is STILL assbackwards and I cannot WAIT to moev the fuck back out of here.

    (Only 6 more months!! whoo!)

But they ALMOST ruined last night for me, until everyone left and I got to sit and listen to his speech by myself. I have never been so proud as an American and I just hope to god that all these “Christians” down here either learn something soon or fall off the face of the earth.

Their hate and flat out ignorance is crippling to our country and it’s really, really hard to be around these types of people.

I truly pray that nothing bad happens to our president because there are many out there who would do something so terrible. :(

Ok…I am so sick of hearing people talk about how bitter the Republicans are and how hateful and bigoted we are. Those people do NOT represent what people like me stand for. I voted for McCain and to be honest, I’m not happy that Obama won, but he’s our president, so I’m just going to deal with it. Race, religion…those had nothing to do with why I didn’t vote for Obama. Plain and simple I don’t agree with his policies and plans for this country. I can see why people did vote for him and why people like him, but that doesn’t mean I have to be one of them

So please stop generalizing and saying that only McCain supporters are saying those horrible things. There are ignorant people on both sides.

  17. jes -USouthAL says:
    Wed, 5th Nov 20084:30 pm

Um, excuse me.. but I think you just lumped yourself into that category on your own, miss.

  18. Holly says:
    Wed, 5th Nov 20084:48 pm

Listen to yourself, telling HER to chill out? Give me a break. You got what you wanted, and Obama won. But people should be entitled to have an opinion. God forbid people didn’t vote for Obama..the horror. My god. After Bush won in 2004 people bitched and bitched and went on and on…but I’m sure you couldn’t have cared less then.

People called George Bush a terrorist and have endlessly mocked him and ridiculed him for the last 8 years. I’m not saying people aren’t allowed to disagree with him or even dislike him but people have said horrible things about hoping he got killed, etc.

I’m not saying it’s the same as being a racist, but you can’t pick and choose who you defend when it comes to hateful comments. No one deserves to have those things said about them.

  19. jes -USouthAL says:
    Wed, 5th Nov 20085:36 pm

Did anyone ever say it was okay for anyone to say those thigns abotu anyone else?

And yes, I can say they are being racist where I live because I live in fking ALABAMA. They’ve said the word nigg*r about 20 times today, so yes, I think I can call that, thank you.

I could care less about people who are upset that Obama won- thats their prerogative, I’m ONLY talking abut the racist assholes in my city/state who have saying he needs to get assassinated by the KKK all morning. Jesus.

Please dont defend these people by saying things were said about George Bush, because while people have said awful things about him as well, that absolutely does not excuse their behavior, NOR make it normal.

People must really not have a clue what kind of crazy people live down here.

Maybe you guys have never been down here, but it seems like you need to make a trip.

  20. jes -USouthAL says:
    Wed, 5th Nov 20085:40 pm

and as I just re-read your comment-

Who ever said we’re picking and choosing who to defend when it comes to hateful comments? How on earth can you suppose that I wouldn’t speak out against the same things about George Bush? (Although, I must admit, I’ve never once have heard that kind of talk about him where I live, as I’ve heard about Obama…)

The point is- I’m talking about MY school, my city, my backwoods ass state… I’m not generalizing or lumping you into any of these groups unless you’ve said the same things about any person.

    So yes, chill.

Did anyone catch the footage of the interview with the woman coming out of the polling booths in south florida? she said,

“I was der fo Obama and he gonna be der fo me so I don have to wok”

This is why I didn’t vote for Obama (well one of many reasons) Not because he’s black, not because he’s (an admitted) muslim, but because he is NOT the change we need. We don’t need to make America more poor by forcing the hardworking people of this country GIVE their money to people who want to SIT ON THE F**KING ASSES.

And Obama’s speech last night? I’m sorry but it was pathetic. Did anyone even listen to McCains? I felt the emotion in McCains speech, I felt his pride as an American. And I could see how hurt he was that he had lost.

Obama’s speech had no emotion, he showed no real pride as an American, and not sure if anyone else realized it, but he was not speaking to all of America, he was speaking to the African American’s ONLY. I’m not being racist by saying that, but he should have been speaking to ALL Americans, not just a certain group. And I guarantee you that’s how the next 4 years will go.

  22. Casey says:
    Thu, 6th Nov 200812:51 am

Oh and another thing I don’t get, how could anyone vote for someone who’s past is so shaddy. His records are sealed, no one knows how he 1 got into Harvard with the grades he made at Columbia and 2. paid for his education. The presidents life should be an open book, and it scares me that we know so little about this man.

  23. Thomas says:
    Thu, 6th Nov 200811:29 am

It is great the country has come to place where we can elect a, half, black man to the White House. Obama was elected, people cheered and those that lost didn’t take to the streets and riot. We are very lucky to live in a country were this kind of ‘change’ in power and occur without a big uprising. We as Americans should all be proud of that.

Now having said that, Obama has a VERY thin record on CHANGE anything. His voting record in the IL state Senate (present 130+) won’t work in his new role. Seniors this year will graduate after Obama has had about 6 months to work his magic and should take a critical eye to how much he has made things better for them. Sure that is short period of time, but he was elect to “Change”, not “will TRY and Change”. This years Juniors will head out into a world where he has 18 months to ‘Change’. Be sure, when the time comes, to look back and see if it is half of what you ‘hoped’ for.

  24. renee says:
    Thu, 6th Nov 20081:29 pm

Oh man, Jes. The bigotry you speak of that’s rampant on your campus kinda makes me want the South to fall into the ocean. Or something.

    But not you. You’re cool.

And Casey, you are an idiot.

“And Obama’s speech last night? I’m sorry but it was pathetic. Did anyone even listen to McCains? I felt the emotion in McCains speech, I felt his pride as an American. And I could see how hurt he was that he had lost. I’m not being racist by saying that, but he should have been speaking to ALL Americans, not just a certain group. And I guarantee you that’s how the next 4 years will go.” Okay, let me start by saying that I was brought to tears by McCain’s speech. He was incredibly gracious in lieu of his loss. HOWEVER, Obama’s speech was far from pathetic. Did you ever think he was stoic because his GRANDMA DIED??!! Have a little heart, man. And as a middle class, twenty-one-year old WHITE GIRL, I felt so connected to Obama during his speech that it almost felt like he was talking to me. How dare you make such a spiteful comment, saying that he was only talking to blacks, and then go back on it and say that you aren’t racist!! Do you have any idea how hypocritical and stupid you sound??

“Oh and another thing I don’t get, how could anyone vote for someone who’s past is so shaddy.” McCain wanted to overturn Martin Luther King Day! How shady is that! McCain personally chose Palin to pick up Hillary supporters, presumably because he assumed liberal women are stupid enough to be swayed (to the dark side) just because his VP pick is a female! Stop deifying McCain and wallowing in your loss. Your poor sportsmanship and abhorrence to president-elect Obama is petty, childish, and is a piss poor representation of the Republican Party.

    YESSSSS!!!!! YESSSSSS!!!!! YESSSSS!!!!!!

That’s how I feel. And I’m going to feel that way for the next four years. The Election of Obama… will be placed among the happiest days of my life.

  27. Casey says:
    Fri, 7th Nov 200812:38 pm

That comment was in no way racist. I realize that it is a great achievement for the African American population but I felt, and many others that I have talked to, felt no connection to Obamas speech. He should have been addressing the entire nation, and frankly, he wasn’t. If you read something into it or got something out of it great, but you are one of the few (obviously not on such a liberal website as this). I’m not wallowing in a loss, or showing poor sportsmanship, I’m simply pointing out the obvious. Well, obvious to anyone who isn’t enchanted by an image the media created.

And no, McCain was in no way shaddy. He has some opinions you may not agree with but he was 100% out in the open about every one of them. The same can definitely not be said for Obama, who contradicted himself numerous times.

I’m interested to see how the next four years will go, from what I’ve heard and seen of Obama I feel like it will be filled with a lot of mistakes and broken promises. (and a lot of people getting something for nothing, and a poorer America as a result). But I could be wrong. No one knows for sure. But I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and hopefully I’ll be wrong.

  28. Melanie says:
    Fri, 7th Nov 20081:47 pm

Well Casey, I’m glad that you’re either so intelligent, omnipotent or psychic that you KNOW why any single person voted for Obama.

You’re showing your ignorance by assuming you know about everyone else. Get over yourself.

“I’m simply pointing out the obvious. Well, obvious to anyone who isn’t enchanted by an image the media created.”

  29. renee says:

Yeah, Casey must either be a political genius or Ms. Cleo to be predicting the apocalypse even though Obama hasn’t even been sworn in yet.

  30. Casey says:
    Fri, 7th Nov 200811:10 pm

“Well Casey, I’m glad that you’re either so intelligent, omnipotent or psychic that you KNOW why any single person voted for Obama.”

Where did I say that I “KNOW” why anyone voted for him? I can’t even fathom why anyone would have voted for him, I said I don’t understand how anyone could, given what little we know about him, but that’s just using common sense. You don’t elect just any weirdo off the street to run your country. Of well I guess the people of this country do. Maybe you should take a step back re-read what I said, and stop making personal attacks against someone simply because they have a different of opinion. I didn’t call anyone names, or make personal attacks on anyone’s intellect simply because they have a different opinion than me.

And renee, you can’t predict that he will make any miraculous changes, if any at all, because the short time he served on the senate he made absolutely no decisions what so ever. And trying to call someone out on spelling while making a personal attack. You must feel real big right now.

  31. Lily says:
    Fri, 7th Nov 200811:37 pm

I see this quite a bit on this site, and not only with Casey, but anyone who has a different opinion then the liberal majority on this site. When ever someone has a different opinion everyone jumps on them with personal attacks. Why can’t anyone just have a civil debate instead of immediately calling someone an “idiot” or “moron” or insulting their intelligence simply because they believe something different. People in this country are supposed to be free to have their own opinions no matter how wrong someone else thinks it may be. You “liberals” are not representing your party very well by going against the American constitution and persecuting someone else for their difference of opinion.

From what I see, Casey made no personal attacks. She stated a different opinion and offered the view of someone who see’s things in a different light. How is anyone to learn anything if no one listens to each other?

  32. Katie says:

I remember the day Bush got elected. I remember sitting in class and getting mocked by my own teacher (IN WASHINGTON STATE) for not wanting Bush in office. I remember thinking, “For the next four years… No way.”

You know what, the Earth is still turning. Horrible things have happened since Bush was in office, and I’m not saying its him to blame. I actually wanted Obama to win. Just to see what it may be like with a competent President in office (vs. Bush). But I do know that McCain was far more worthy of the place than Bush ever was.

Any who, forget politics. Learn to think for your selves.

“You ‘liberals’ are not representing your party very well by going against the American constitution and persecuting someone else for their difference of opinion.”

How do you think Obama supporters felt throughout this online discussion and the national election when they were constantly called “misinformed,” “uneducated,” “ignorant,” and my personal favorite, “brainwashed by the media”? As a woman who EDUCATED herself before ultimately voting for Obama, how am I NOT supposed to be personally offended by such insults? I guess it’s okay for Republicans to name-call, generalize, and accuse, but not Democrats? I suppose I’m not to fight back when people say that our President-elect is going to destroy the country? Or that he only cares about Blacks? (You guys DO KNOW that he wants to incorporate poor Caucasians into affirmative action, right?) Or that he’s the anti-Christ for allegedly having a different faith than others? Talk about persecution, huh Lily?

It pains me that you guys can dish it out, but you sure can’t take it. You must realize that in order to garner the respect you so desire, you actually need to earn it.

    Nicely said… :)

I was actually in the shower the other night when this thought struck my mind:

(Local) Republicans have been bitching about Obama wanting to help the lower classes, calling him a socialist and saying they dont want the Government telling them how to spend their money.

I guess the Democrats don’t take it so brashly because we’ve had the Republicans telling us what we can do with our own bodies and who we’re allowed to love & marry for so long we’re used to people enforcing their ideas and beliefs on us… hmmm.

    Food for thought…

  36. Casey says:

Ok Renee maybe you should get that stick out of your ass and stop being a typical democrat and playing the victim. I did not attack anyone, or their beliefs, (until now) I simply stated my opinion. If you can’t deal with people having an opinion that differs from yours then too bad, you’re going to be a miserable hateful person all your life. I’m not making any apologies to you or anyone else for stating my opinions. Good for you for educating yourself, you don’t fall into the MAJORITY that everyone is talking about being “misinformed” “uneducated”, etc., so stop taking offense because no one is talking about you or putting you down. I don’t know what Obama will do with our country, no one does, and I also never said he only liked black, or that he was the anti-christ, so I really have no idea what you’re talking about. And republicans can’t take it? Sweetie we’ve been taking it for 8 years. It’s you guy’s turn to endure the criticism’s.

And Lily never said anything about what party she affiliates herself with, or anything to put one or the other down so you just sound like a complete bitch for attacking her.

  37. renee says:
    Wed, 12th Nov 200812:05 pm

Oh GOD. Casey, DUDE, I thought we were done!!! Maybe the reason why “you have no idea what I was talking about” in the last post is because it WASN’T ADDRESSED TO YOU AND YOU ALONE! It was a generalized statement about the grave misinterpretation and maltreatment of Obama supporters. That post was essentially my concession from this thread. Yet the fact that you have reignited our war of words based on a statement not even aimed at you speaks measures of YOUR anger and even that poor sportsmanship we talked about. Remember that? Sweetie?

How can you call me a “typical democrat” and then say that I “don’t fall into the majority” the next? What does that even mean? And how in the HELL am I putting Lily down by posing a (hypothetical) question based on something she said? (In case I need to clarify it for you, those were all hypothetical questions, so you don’t need to answer them. Okay? Sweetie?)

You don’t have to make any apologies for what you said, man! I have NO remorse for anything I’ve said to you. At all. Not even when I made fun of your spelling or when I called you a loon. If anything Casey, you have served as a fine punching bag and I have greatly enjoyed this debate. And isn’t that the joy of online discussion forums? Can either of us really say if we would have the time, patience, or energy to carry on a verbal siege such as this in the real world? (Doubt it.)

That said, if you do indeed wish to continue our little contention, I am all for it.

    What do you say? Sweetie?

Thanksgiving Makes For Some Great TV

If there’s one thing I love more than gorging myself on turkey (and stuffing, and cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie… mmm… wait, what was I talking about again?), it’s loafing on the living room couch before and after Thanksgiving dinner and taking in some fine Thanksgiving television.
