Breastfeeding: Get a Grip
This video is beyond disturbing. These two poor girls will never lead normal lives, they will probably die as old virgin cat ladies. Shouldn’t child protective services get in on this one? Hello?
The benefits of breastfeeding cannot be disputed. It is better for the baby and mother, both in the short and the long term. I’m all for women being able to whip out their breast and feed their baby whenever is necessary. However, there needs to be some limits on the distance women will go regarding breastfeeding.
Children should be breast feed until the age of one or two. After that it becomes a little abnormal. If your child can ask you for your boobie, you shouldn’t be letting little Tommy suck on it anymore.
This leads us to the case of famous moms and their obsession with and discussion of feeding their babes. We all love Selma, she is beautiful, smart, and does a whole lot of charity work. But, yesterday Selma Hayek was quoted as saying, “I’m like an alcoholic. It is like, I don’t care if I cry, I don’t care if I am fat, I am just going to do it for one more week, one more month, and then when I see how much good it is doing her and I can’t stop.” This quote is about Selma’s addiction to breastfeeding, which makes it a little more scary. Remember that famous pic of Angelina Jolie in W Magazine breastfeeding her new baby? And of Maggie Gyllenhaal on a park bench with her entire breast exposed?
All I’m saying is we need to get a grip on reality and not breastfeed our kids even after they have learned long division and how to play kickball. It just isn’t right.
Tell us what you're thinking...

I mean it seems really weird to us just because of our society, but I think this woman is practically a saint. Can you imagine breastfeeding for that long? Ugh. But what she's doing isn't gross or anything, and lots of cultures breastfeed a lot later into childhood than in the US.
And anyway, this post is weird because you say that you understand breastfeeding has benefits and you're "all for women being able to whip out their breast and feed their baby whenever is necessary" but then you sound so ignorant with your salma hayak/angelina jolie/maggie gyllenhaal comment! I don't understand what youre trying to say exactly

@ christie- they produce milk as long as there is something taking milk from them

I think that mothers should breastfeed much longer than most already do. But I also think that it is necessary for the mother to decide when breastfeeding is no longer okay. (Unless the child decides first) To allow the child to continue breastfeeding until the age of 8 seems potentially hazardous to the sexual and emotional growth of the child. Also, think about how this would be if the two children in question were not girls, but boys? I think that around 3 or 4 at least a child should be weened off its mothers milk. (It's also not incredibly healthy, it is loaded with fats to help newborn babies grow. Later in life, it is no longer helpful)

Oh whatever, I never read Dlisted so thanks for this post, I would never have heard it before. I think this is interesting. I agree with Laura that women should breastfeed longer then they do now but to that age is ridiculous. You should quit before the child can make up their own mind.

Sorry, that last part came out odd. I meant before the kid can actually tell you he/she wants/does not want the feeding.

Ok..I'm a nurse..and we are taught that all women should breast feed (some nurses are absolutely hardcore about it)…but the proven benefits are in INFANTS..up to 6 months…not into the toddler years. They can eat solid foods by then..there is just no reason for it physically or nutritionally.

Whatever, shutup everyone.
Just because you don't think it's normal doesn't mean you have to rag on it.
In fact, Native Americans breastfed until around the same age as these girls and apart from being massacred by Europeans, not happened to them.
I would think if anything you'd all be disturbed by the dialogue going on in the video.
"They talk to my breasts" and name them…and love them even if they have stretch marks and sag.
..wth??

ok so this is strange, for sure. But In our society breasts are really sexualized, when really their only purpose is to produce milk. So I dunno, to each his own right?

I dont care what site it was already on. I don't have the time to ready every blog or site out there every day. Thats why I love college candy, it has some of the best original stories but also picks up on other interesting or even bizzare stories out there. I also love how you keep us up on fashion and new products out there. You guys cover everything. and THANKS this was the first I saw this video and read about this story. VERY didisturbing!!

OK, ignorant or not, I'm creeped out. Seriously, those poor kids one day] have to explain that to a significant other and what person in their right mind wouldn't go running and screaming from breast milk girl? Oh, and I don't read Dlisted so thanks for the post, I'm good and creeped out now.

Great if Native Americans did it or other societies do it on the regular. But 8 year olds growing up in this society right now are probably going to have issues, due to social and cultural implications.

Yes, because the first thing they will say when they meet someone is. "Hi! I'm Sally, I'm 16 & I still drink Mommy's breastmilk!"

Actually Lisa, infancy goes up to 1 year-which is when you should truly wean a child from breastfeeding…but minor details. I'm a nurse also.
Secondly, the average age to wean a child from breastfeeding worldwide is 4 years old.
While in the U.S. and like developed countries we have access to greater amounts and types of foods, this is not the care everywhere.
Also, the nutritional benefits of breastfeeding do not just suddenly stop @ 6 months or a year. The mothers immunity continues to be past onto the child regardless of their age. For example, there are 200 stains of the flu-obviously a 1 or 2 year old hasn't been exposed to all or even many of these, especially if they are not in day care and don't have sibiling etc. Passing the immunity onto your child can decrease the chances of many types of illnesses.
While I don't agree with breastfeeding until the age of 8, I find it to be acceptable to breastfeed until 3 or 4 years-which is what the majority of the world does. The intent is what is important. It needs to be out of caring for you child's health, not purely the pleasure the mother may get from bonding with their childing during this time.
I see how many people can be grossed out by the concept, but for a lot of people it is the more nutritional, less expensive, and overall most beneficial way to feed a child, particularly in low-income and 3rd world counties.

It is odd to me personally…but thats because the culture we live in doesn't practice breastfeeding to ages upwards of 2 at the most. Does it mean its wrong to breastfeed longer? Absolutely not. When in Rome, do as the Romans…we're probably weird to other women in the world for NOT breastfeeding very long!
