Not everyone has a newer model and not everyone has the settings for power set correctly. There are options that allow power to still go through the computer even after the power button is pushed. It's just a better practice to make sure that you wait before immediately jumping to that practice. Wait for the hard drive to stop spinning and then turn it off.

Ah the blue screen of death. My laptop decided to completely crash in what I thought was hard drive failure. I knew beforehand that parts of my hard drive was dying so I just assumed that it finally had. Turns out Windows just got messed up and files got corrupted so Windows couldn't start up. So Windows was reinstalled and it's as good as new. Well as good as possible considering the hard drive is still dead in spots.

One suggestion: NEVER just push the power button on your computer if it freezes. Leave it alone for a minute or two and see if it unfreezes long enough for you to do a normal restart.

Running defrags every so often is also helpful. Remove spyware and check to see if your computer is running anything that it doesn't need to. Just look up things online if you aren't sure what it is.
