The Best and Worst Things about Winter — The California Girl Edition
December 6, 2008 Posted in HaHa
I’m going to level with you, here—I go to Stanford. It’s not snowing out here. I get pretty cold at night and in the morning, but that’s because I’m from SoCal, which makes me a big baby in the weather department, I know that.
So although it’s relatively warm here during the winter, there are definitely some changes that occur with the change of the “seasons,” and, as with everything in life, they come with their pros and cons:
Pros:
1. Cute scarves.
2. Better tea (Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride from Celestial Seasonings, anyone?)
3. Pumpkin and cinnamon flavored everything. Yesss.
4. I have an excuse for my Scandinavian chronic paleness.
5. Christmas lights in the palm trees.
6. Christina Aguilera’s “My Kind of Christmas” from 2001. I bust this out every year and it NEVER gets old.
Cons
1. The gym is packed. All the people who ran outside are now on my treadmill. Grr.
2. Flocked Christmas Trees. I don’t understand why Californians insist on this disgusting trend every year—WE LIVE IN CALIFORNIA. We don’t get snow. So buying a tree with FAKE snow on it, really? Tacky. Tacky and ungrateful. Let’s just take our 70 degree Christmas and move on; if we don’t have to deal with the cold that comes with the real stuff, we don’t deserve the fake stuff.
3. Remembering jackets. It’s just not in our nature to remember, and the nippy 58 degree weather is hard on our thin California blood!
But before I make the East Coasters too jealous, I will say that every California girl DOES occasionally pine for the hope of a snow day, a snowball fight and the ability to make snow angels.
What do you think? What are your favorite/least favorite things about winter?

dry skin/lips: soo bad in the winter.
but that just gives me a reason to drag my boy into bath and body works,
so i guess it's a pro and a con built into one.

I'm so jealous! Even though I'm Midwest born and raised, I hate winter more than anything. Walking to class on the coldest days literally brings tears to my eyes. The snow, the wind burn on my cheeks, falling on ice… I'm counting down the days until April!

Um, parts of the East Coast definitely don't get snow. Ever hear of this place called Florida? Not so cold.

I've lived on the beach in Mississippi all my life, I've never had a truly cold Winter.
I move to Kansas City Missouri in one week. I'm getting the feeling I'm going to freeze to death.

KC, MO is awesome! You'll be cold but at least you'll be in a super awesome city.
And The Plaza at Christmas time is gorgeous (and great shopping
)

I'm from Virginia. I LOVE cold weather and winter. I was born and raised in the snow. I moved to Florida when I was 15 and have absolutely HATED it here. There is not winter. There is no autumn, or spring at all! Florida sucks! There's the beach, but big whoop even that gets old. Seasons are something to be treasured and I feel bad for people who have lived in Florida all their lives (like my boyfriend) because most of my memories revolve around the seasons. When you don't have seasons you miss out on so much of life.

I live in KC!!! Aww! You'll love it. You get a taste of every season, plus everyone is friendly and living is cheap.
My mom is from Biloxi, and she hasn't left KC yet.

Pro's:
It give you a reason to spoone extra close
It gives you an excuse to eat a little extra…hey, I need extra insulation
Snow is always magical. Sounds lame but it's true. Sure the 3rd and 4th day are nasty when it turns all brown and you can't play in it anymore cause you not sure if its dirt or poop etc, but when you wake up in the morning you feel lucky because not only does it look different than the day before but it feels different too. Usually in a good way.
Cons:
I'm in Chicago, AKA the windy city. Plus, I go to school on the lake. I.e. 10 degrees cooler than the inland=you better bundle up tight cause you could easily lose a body part to the cold.
Slush=really nasty looking Ugg's. There goes $150.

I grew up in Central Texas, and now go to school in on the South Texas coast, so I know EXACTLY how you feel! 58 here during the day, and everyone's all bundled up! I went home for Thanksgiving and spent the whole time shivering in 45-50 degree night weather that everyone else was used to…we're spoiled on the coast, not going to lie.

I'm from San Diego, ULTIMATE soCal, and now I'm in Providence, RI for school. I'm sorry, maybe some of you people can't live without seasons, but you get so much crap along with it… Winterbody, seasonal depression, extra expensive gas and electric bills for heating, dry skin, weird fluctuations in humidity (at least here), wind so cold your eyes water just walking to class, no beautiful flowers anywhere, and horrendous wardrobe adjustments. I don't want to have another closet just for winter wear, and I miss wearing dresses all the time. Tights don't cut it after awhile, and it hasn't even snowed here yet!!! No, two weeks ago it was 88 degrees in San Diego. I miss THAT. I miss the beach, I miss the sunlight, and I miss the warmth. Every year my family walks down to the beach on Thanksgiving and Christmas after the big meal / opening the presents. If nothing else, that walk reminds us to be thankful.

I've never lived anywhere but Boston so I guess I have nothing to compare it to. But really, you just get used to it. It's only for a couple months.
And I don't know about snow being magical..I'd rather have it be freezing than have 2 feet of snow outside like some winters.

I'm in Blacksburg, home of the Virginia Tech Hokies (And ACC CHAMPIONS!).
Starting around Halloween, we've had at least ten or twelve snowfalls and the snow is surreal here, like someone's dropping down cotton balls. It's freezing, but at least it's pretty.

I love that Christmas cd. I play it all the time, and yeah, it never gets old.
Does anyone want my weather? It's -7F with the windchill and snowing. It actually looks like a snowglobe out there.

I never thought about how people from the south dont get seasons or snow. It just never really hit me till now. I mean, I always knew, but it never crossed my mind. I feel SOOOO bad for you southerners.

Tiffany, I agree with the Chicago comment. Would the school you go to be Loyola by any chance?

Im from Scotland. It just rains ALL THE TIME! Ok so not all the time but alot. So in the winter not only do we get soaked, but we freeze at the same time, although not enough for us to get snow!
(Having said that it does usually snow about march. When it should be getting into spring…)
