The point of the article is that, despite what people say, you shouldn't enter college with these beliefs embedded in your brain. After all, if you consistently worry about these things you may actually put yourself at greater risk for other stressors.

The dating someone my freshman year thing definitely bit me in the ass. Sleeping in with him rather than going to my 8:30 always seemed like a better option. NEVER again! It's classes over boys next quarter :)

With regard to the Freshman 15, it definitely can happen. It's not about how much you exercise, how much you drink, or how much you eat, but how your body handles stress (though all of those factors certainly can't help). You will realize in college that your body has many different ways for coping with change- weight gain, perhaps, being one of them. I gained 10 lbs during my freshman year, and I also developed lactose intolerance, which is a really common occurrence among college kids (because when you're stressed, your body stops producing lactase). The bottom line is, even though you may not be paranoid-omg-its-finals-stressed all the time, you are dealing with a lot more subconscious stress than you realize, because all of a sudden you are responsible for so much more.

However, there is hope. I lost all the weight I gained in a matter of weeks during the summer, and I've never gained it back. And I can enjoy cheese and milk once again, too. Once your body becomes accustomed to all the new stressors in your life, it becomes much easier to take care of it.

Despite being a varsity athleate, and a pretty healthy eater -- the FRESHMAN 15 was a very unwelcoming reality for me. It's not a given that it'll happen to you, but it also isn't just a myth. It can happen, trust me.

My roommate should have followed rule #4.

I thought she was a totally cool, fun girl, but two weeks into out 1st semester she starts dating this loser sophomore(who is in his 2nd sophomore year!) and she has lost touch will all of her friends, skips class constantly and never showers or changes her clothes.

Sucks for her.

i agree about the freshman 15. being in a totally new environment and adapting your behavior to a totally new schedule is uber stressful, and it made me lose weight. however, i go to a TEENY private school (just under a thousand undergrads) and #2 is not completely true. no, im not broke, but those "fabulous" options? not so. we have one cafeteria with 3 options. salad/sandwich, grill, or comfort food. most of the time, both the grill and the real food suck, and a girl gets REAL tired of salad and Ramen! lol but i guess that's a sacrifice of private school.

this is probably going to sound a bit crazy, but i found i didn't gain the freshman 15 because i didnt have time to eat. while i didnt live on campus, i did eat the food there a lot, but i found that i was rushing too much to stuff my face all day. even if i did eat fries, it was probably burned off when i ran to class during the winter months.
