Smart and Chic: The Essentials for a Night Out

goingoutessentials.jpgAs my friends know, I never leave the house without fully stocking my purse with all of the essentials. The tricky part about that, however, is being prepared without looking like a bag lady.

In other words, you gotta make sure that you have what you need in the most miniature form possible. Here are some of my personal favorites to keep me prepared without ruining my outfit (or sweet dance moves) with a massive purse.

A wristlet: The right bag is step one to making sure you’re fully stocked with what you need for a night out. I prefer to use a wristlet because I can throw it around my wrist and not worry about it slipping off. Plus, they’re small enough to hold onto all night without crampin’ your style. Try to get one with a zipper – I once lost my ID and debit card due to a faulty clasp.

Lip gloss: But not any lip gloss. Be sure that you buy a shade that you can wear with almost any make up style. That way, you can just keep it in your purse without having to remember to switch it out every night. Also, try to get one that will moisurize your lips as well so you don’t have to take up precious purse space with an additional lip balm. I like MAC lip gloss in Spalicious.

Gum or Mints: I prefer to use mints because you don’t have to deal with wrappers or have to spit anything out. My freshman year of high school, I discovered Certs Powerful Mints for prom. The package has 60 powerful yet yummy mints in a package the size of a credit card. Perfectttt. Read More »

The Freshman Experience: Undeclared and Unsure

test-prep-use-this-one.jpgI have no idea what I want to do with the rest of my life. And yes, I know there are others in the same boat. I know I don’t have to declare a major for another year, and I know there’s time. I’ve heard it all. But it doesn’t leave me any less nervous.

In some ways, I like the unclear path. I am taking classes because they sound interesting, not because they will help me complete a major. I am learning just because I want to, and my grades are just because I want to try my best, not because I know I am looking for a certain grad school or want to impress future employees. For all I know, I could be studying subjects which will be completely irrelevant to my future. So I have no pressure.

Except, I still have pressure. In some ways, it’s even more than I had in high school. Sure, it’s not like I know I have to get a certain GPA and do certain activities to get into college. But now that I’m here, I can’t believe there’s no more plan. I am the kind of person who plans out her entire future—not minute-by-minute or a 10-year-plan, more like a general idea of what’s to come– but now I have no concept of past college. All my life, I knew I was going to go to graduate high school and go to college. Now I’m here, and I can check that off the list. Read More »

It’s On: Steelers Vs. Cardinals

steelers.jpg  leinart.jpg

We’ve said it before: we are strong believers that when it comes to football, the team with the hottest quarterback wins. We were dead on when it came to the National Championship (helloooo, Tim Tebow), so we are confident the same can be said for the Super Bowl.

We at CollegeCandy have a thing for underdogs (and really hot dudes), so our money is on Matt Leinart and the Cardinals. Which QB makes your little heart skip a beat/will take their team all the way? [Insert joke about going all the way here.]

The Love List: Super Bowl Sunday Funday Edition

chips_and_dip.jpg[Welcome to my Weekly Love List, a list on all things I love. Because if I love them, well, obviously you should love them too. As the Backstreet Boys song says (and yes, I am actually quoting them) “My Love is All I Have To Give.” So with that throwback, here are this week’s list-worthy things…]

I’ll be the first to admit it. I love Superbowl Sunday for three reasons and three reasons only:

1.The food

2. The advertisements (Remember Britney Spears’ Pepsi commercial/music vid that debuted during the Superbowl? Sigh. Those were the days)

3. The food

There used to be 4 but then Justin showed Janet’s boobs, the FCC went crazy, and the halftime shows became lamer than my past few Saturday nights, which included watching Little Einsteins with my nephew (need I say more?).

Anyways, here is my Super Bowl inspired Love List. Because with the biggest sporting event of the year comes a lot of food things to love. Read More »

Saturday Read: I’m With the Band by Pamela Des Barres

51e4hwxgbrl_sl500_.jpgAlong with books, another obsession of mine is music. I have what one would call “eclectic” taste, in that I like absolutely EVERYTHING. You’re equally as likely to hear me rapping along to Biggie Smalls, belting out a classic from Fleetwood Mac or humming a tune from some little-known indie band about to blow up.

So clearly, I love music biographies.

If you read my list of 5 modern must-reads, you’ll know I encourage everyone to read rockstar biographies. I really love getting inside the brain and life of my favorite musicians; it totally changes the way I see them and gives me a glimpse into their life as a real person.

When I found “I’m With the Band” in the music section of my local bookstore I figured it would be another typical memoir from the music world, but I soon realized it wasn’t your typical music biography.

Pamela Des Barres was a groupie. Not just any groupie – a super groupie. She had flings or relationships with Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Keith Moon and even Don Johnson (yes, Miami Vice Don Johnson) and was Frank Zappa’s babysitter! Needless to say, she had an “in” in the music world. Read More »

All Made Up: Wear Green Makeup!

plantlove-eyeshadow.jpgYou’ve heard the truth about “organic” makeup, so what’s a girl to do when she wants to be environmentally cautious and fabulous all at the same time? The world of organic makeup seems shady at best with no real standards of any kind, but that is not the same story when it comes to Green makeup. There are a couple companies that really take environmental issues to heart and actually sell products that can help mother earth.

Cargo – Plant Love

Cargo has always had great makeup products, cool eye shadows and great blushes. But they recently launched a whole line of eco- friendly products. Everything from lipsticks, powders, foundations, liners, shadows, etc., all in super-biodegradable packaging. They even created the first ever compostable lipsticks! Made completely from corn, these lipstick tubes break down in a compost pile just like apple cores and banana peels.

The whole Plant Love line is certified by ECOCERT, which is kind of like a Better Business Bureau for eco-friendliness. They monitor not just the packaging, but the whole production process to make sure that the products are made, shipped and disposed of in way that is not too harsh on the environment. The coolest thing is the boxes the products come in actually have wildflower seeds in them! If you plant them, you can grow a garden. How’s that for green? Read More »

Weekly Wrap Up: January’s Almost Over

tired_baby-whew.jpgHow is it almost February?

Wasn’t it just yesterday that I was vowing to head back to the gym and stop eating crap? Oh yeah; that was yesterday. Not gonna happen with the Super Bowl coming, unless I stick to some healthier snack options. But we all know that’s not gonna happen.

The last week of January has been quite eventful. And stressful. Too bad we didn’t have any peanut butter to get us through the hard times. On the bright side, we did get a fun snow day to break up the monotony, and we came across this gem to help us out when we can’t get our asses to class.

But besides that – stress, stress, stress.

That trip to the gyno scared the crap out of us, that story about how poorly the university treats its students frustrated us, and everyone ripping on Jessica Simpson made our blood boil.

And don’t even get us started on our latest fears of the birth control pill. Not that we need to worry about that; we scared all the boys away a long time ago.

It’s all good, though; we have the puppy bowl to look forward to this weekend, and if that’s not enough to get us out of our funk, we can always watch Grey’s Anatomy season 1 on DVD. You know, before the show got so, so bad.

G.W.W.E.: Harry “Hot for Me” Connick, Jr.

harry-connick-jr.jpg(We’re back with another weekly installment of G.W.W.E. [Guys We Wanna Eff]. It’s official: the winter doldrums have set in, and who better to cozy up in bed with than Harry Connick, Jr.?)

Very few stars these days can legitimately claim to be top-notch actors and musicians, but Harry Connick, Jr. is certainly one of them. A stylish crooner with a killer smile to boot, Harry puts the swagger in suave. His dinner-jacket-and-slacks style makes me want to slip into my best little black dress, some Chanel No. 5, recline on a velvet chaise…and eff his brains out.

Originally a professional jazz pianist, Harry got his big break arranging the soundtrack for everyone’s favorite rom-com, When Harry Met Sally. Seriously, hottie Harry’s eff-me-tender tunes made WHMS my number-one rainy-day chick flick, hands down. His work even won him his first Grammy! To date, he’s released several albums of music, from jazz to Christmas classics. Harry’s the kind of guy who will take you by the hand and sing your sweet little soul to the heavens of effable merriment, a true gent if I do say so myself.

Of course, his acting career has truly taken off over the past few years. His guest-starring stint on Will and Grace had me so glued to the television (Sexy Harry? My fave sitcom? Almost better than a good, long eff.) that I totally bought the series on DVD to relive every effable moment at my convenience.  Meanwhile, he’s broken out onto the big screen, with starring roles in Hope Floats, P.S. I Love You, and his latest release, New In Town, which opens today.

And of course, Harry wouldn’t be a great eff if he didn’t have a heart. He’s been a huge supporter of disaster relief programs in his native New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  Yes, I know he’s married with children, but I’ve gotta say, if you ever need some (effable) relief of your own, Harry, you know who to call.

The Fab 5: Best Super Bowl Commercials EVER

budweiserfrogs.jpgGuys usually watch the Superbowl for the actual football game (or in some cases *ahem, my dad* as an excuse to shove as much pizza and wings they can get down their throats). As a sports-crazy girl (go Duke basketball!) I also watch it for the action, but I can understand if some non-sporty people don’t feel as enthusiastic about a bunch of big, padded guys running into each other and chasing after a little ball. At least, that’s how my mom puts it.

But she’s found an entertaining reason to join our whole family during this epic February event: the commercials. This year, NBC Superbowl commercials will cost companies $3 MILLION dollars for 30 seconds of air time! That’s equal to $100,000 for 1 second. Aren’t we in a recession?

Anyway, to celebrate the fact that our economy is in shambles but we still have enough money for ads with talking frogs and cowboys chasing cats, here are my favorite 5 Superbowl commercials of all time: Read More »
