Patent leather stilettos! Cashmere sweaters! Wool pants! With all the clothing and accessories out there, it sure is hard to know what pieces you absolutely have to have in your closet. And with all the fabulous new items and trends each season, the weeding out becomes harder and harder. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of the five pieces you simply shouldn’t be iwthout!
THE WHITE SHIRT
It’s clean, it’s crisp, it’s absolutely flawless. Not to mention it’s designer Carolina Herrera’s number one staple! (And if it’s good enough for Carolina, it’s totally good enough for us.) The white shirt pulls together any look instantly, whether you’re wearing jeans and sneakers or a pencil skirt and heels. Button it up and you’ll be the most fabulous person in the room! Try one like the Rachel Stretch Cotton Shirt from Ralph Lauren Black Label ($298 at ralphlauren.com) — it’s designed with a hint of stretch, so it hugs your curves just right.
BLACK PUMPS
No, they won’t make you look like an old lady. At least not the ones we’re talking about! Go for ones with height — at least three inches — and a pointy toe, so you’ll look super large and in charge. Now, you don’t have to spend a fortune on these. Everywhere from Payless to Manolo Blahnik sells them. So it’s up to you how much to spend … just make sure you can walk in them, stand in them, look pretty in them all day long! And definitely make sure they peek out ever so sexily from beneath your fave pair of jeans. Our pick — the Lush Patent Pump by KORS Michael Kors ($270 at shopbop.com), which graces the vamp of the foot really elegantly.
A GREAT SATCHEL
What better way to carry your entire life around than in a fabulous bag? The perfect bag will pull together any look and make you look of-the-moment in no time. We believe in carrying a leather satchel — the straps stay on your shoulder while you’re running from class to brunch with your girlfriends, the shape is uber-chic and the offerings are massive! Try one like the Totally Turnlock Mini Quinn from Marc by Marc Jacobs ($398 at eluxury.com), which comes in a go-with-everything gunmetal hue.
THE CASHMERE CARDIGAN
Why? Because it’s just a little more grown-up than your favorite college zip-up hoodie. You can find one in every color under the sun … not to mention it’s cozy, warm and stylish all year long. Our pick this season? The Cashmere Classic Crewneck Cardigan in Heather Plum by J. Crew ($168 at jcrew.com). The of-the-moment purple hue is so royal in feel, and the Italian cashmere is super-soft.
BOOTCUT JEANS
Why? Because this is just the most flattering kind of denim out there. Bootcut jeans look good on every figure, from petite to tall, from thin to curvy. No matter what your body type, there is a pair out there to suit you. And the brand that seems to have this style down pat? It’s totally 7 For All Mankind. We LIVE in our Bootcut in Hawaii jeans ($185 at 7forallmankind.com), which just make our legs look seriously long and lean and our butt look totally amazing!

You know how Tim Gunn has his uniform? The black suit he wears when he doesn't know what to wear? Well, all of these pieces worn together is pretty much my uniform haha!

Finding cheaper alternatives would have been a nice touch to this article. Sorry, but I have bills to pay that are far more important than fashion.

I'm with Christine…
a 300 dollar white shirt? Yikes! Sorry, but there are cheaper and just as good quality alternatives out there. This is supposed to be a blog directed toward broke college students, not Hollywood celebrities.

Inspired to go buy some gap bootcut jeans to replace my favourite pair that died the other day. Didn't spend $180 though… more like $12 on eBay.
THERE'S A RECESSION ON.

for a cheaper version of a white shirt- new york and company is a great alternative to Ralph Lauren. i get all my button downs from there and they fit very well.
for black pumps, don't skimp on those. my good friend who's about 4 years older than me got a pair of Micheal Kors shoes and they still look amazing.but for those of us on a budget, target or payless has great pairs. if you have bigger feet, a round toe with a high heel is the way to go.
for a great satchel, places like ross's in florida or marshalls or tjmaxx are great. they have some of the best bags , in my opinion. they hold up well to the wear and tear of any environment.
for cardigans, old navy has some really nice ones. if you are taller or petite and know what size you wear[s,m,l,xl,xxl...], online they have sizes that better fit you. the petite sizes have shorter sleeves and a smaller shoulder width. and the tall sizes add and inch or two to the sleeve and shoulder length.
jeans are a staples.i get my jeans from charlotte russe, the refuge denim lines is amazing. the skinnys will fit any body type, you just have to try them on. old navy also has some good pants. i live in the flirt cut pants. the skinnys and bootcuts there are amazing. they hug your bum and make your legs look lean.

If there is an H&M by you, try that for all of those items. I got an excellent white button down that actually doesn't gap over my boobs for like, 19 bucks.
They have really great stuff that is classic and classy (and their jewelry is nice and chunky for CHEAP!!!)

i'm not apologetic – these prices are insane…
I agree with the others' statements regarding the fact that there is a Global recession right now. However honestly most of us would not buy a $300 shirt if we could find a basically identical shirt, in terms of quality, for a much much cheaper price.

Yeah.. You can definitely find most of these expensive pieces at Marshalls, TJ Maxx, etc., but I usually buy whatever is in my budget the first time. Old Navy always has good jeans- I like the flirt and the sweetheart cuts. And I agree with everything else Taylor said.

They were just suggestions for the actual items listed. You dont have to spend that much money to have those 5 things.

well yes these things are expensive… but i wouldnt really be promoting buying cashmere right now. purchasing cashmere is probably one of the worst things you can do for the environment. the issue is, china has taken up the bulk of cashmere production, and goats eat a ton of grass, and its basically destroyed the chinese landscape, to the point where china is experiencing dust storms, due to sand coming off the mountains that the goats wiped clean.
