Fashionably Techie: Tis the Season For TVs

superbowl-tv.jpgIt’s Superbowl season and you know what that means. Well, if you’re me it means nothing as I hate sports, but to others it’s the season of greasy snack food, beer, and two toned shirts.

And to retailers it’s the season to lower prices on TVs.

Yes, this is the season to buy a new TV.  As this is one of the largest viewing events of the year, the prices of TVs are being slashed to make purchasing that new set as easy as possible for that avid football nut. I mean, it’s far easier to convince your wife/girlfriend/sig other that it’s a good buy when it’s $500 off (after mail in rebates).

But even if you’re not really into the game, now would still be a good time to upgrade from that old tube set. Flat screen TVs are easier to fit into small spaces, provide a much better picture and are just so pretty. Below are some pretty fantastic deals happening now.

Walmart has a good deal on a 19” set. It’s not the biggest, but it’s perfect for small dorms/apartments. Or just your bedroom. You won’t be gathered around it playing Wii, but you can at least cuddle with your honey and watch a movie.

Best Buy has a few deals on 26” sets. Not a huge scree, but big enough for you and your buds to play some Gear of War 2. Depending on how much you want to spend you have a few options with this size.

I found Kmart to be a place to get a good 32”. They didn’t have many to choose from, but the ones they did have were of good quality.

Remember, it’s ok to go off brand with a TV sometimes. You may be able to get a better deal and the same quality. Try and go to the store and look at a few just to judge picture quality, actual size, etc . . . Even if you get it from somewhere else you’ll still benefit from having a look first. Or go online to a site like CNet and get reader reviews (read: people with more TV experience than you) on the sets you like.

Oh, and don’t buy a huge TV just because it’s a good deal. You will spend a ton more than you planned and it may not even work in your space.

Have fun out there!

You won't find any deals at Circuit City right now — My husband is the store director of the one here in town… the liquidators put all the prices back up at regular MSRP before taking the percentage off…you'll spend more now than you would have 2 weeks ago before the stores were liquidating and they were on sale…

Boo. this whole liquidation makes me very sad. and nervous.

Circuit City is liquidating right now. Maybe you could find good deals there, too.

girls are pretty dim when it comes to TVs. If it says sony bravia on it, and is bigger than your old widescreen, most girls coo and caw over it, happy to fork out cash for the big TV.

Talk to a guy who knows what he's talking about.

More important than the size is the resolution. Going for the best HD you can get? Make sure its 1080P (progressive) and not 1080I (interlaced) for the best viewing experience.

Even settle for 720P – although note theres a visible difference between that and 1080p.

Also, the contrast ratio means more than the size – for example, my brother in law is sporting a 40" Samsung (1080p) with a contrast ratio of 30,000:1 – thats pretty decent (it means the blacks are blacker and the whites are whiter than say a 20,000:1).

The size isn't as important – to be honest, my laptop does 720p easily – it can stream 1080p onto the TV though – and it looks amazing even on a 15.4 inch screen. So even if you can only fit a 23 incher in your room, go for the best res and contrast ratio you can find.

Also, don't take in the spiel of the shop sellers – show them you're no idiot willing to part with your cash by asking them about contrast ratio's and resolutions before showing any appreciation for the TV at all. If you and your mates all run over to the biggest branded TV in the shop and start squealing that you could maybe afford it, theyre gonna think you're another mindless idiot and subsequently take you, and your cash, for a ride.
