Hate Football? Superbowl Sunday Alternatives, Just For You!

aubaby.jpgIn the interest of full disclosure, I will probably be watching the Superbowl. Boyfriend’s orders. But in the interest of a little fantasy indulgence, I’m going to spend some time thinking about the lovely, relaxing things I could be doing instead of watching men in shiny pants run at each other for 5 seconds, followed by a 15 minute break in the action.

And none of these things have anything to do with nacho cheese or buffalo wing sauce. My fate is sealed, but I hope someone out there gets to enjoy them.

1. It’s baaaaaaack! PUPPY BOWL V. Five years ago, a tradition was born. An adorable, adorable tradition. The stars, as you may have guessed, are not Steelers, not Cardinals; just puppies. These puppies romp on a faux football field, not so much in teams but as an every-puppy-for-himself sort of gameplay. Puppies of all breeds and sizes tussle, tug at toys, and are penalized for bad behavior by referees in full black and white uniform. And the half-time show? Kitties. Not even kidding. It’s been growing in popularity every year, but after the raging public love for the Shiba Inu puppy cam, I can’t imagine it’s going to be anything but a smashing success. Read More »

He Said/She Said: Red Flags That Send Him Running

175232__howtobop_l.jpgIt was cold out. There was nothing on TV. I was PMSing. And, yes, I cried multiple times while watching How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days on DVD.

I don’t know if it was my tumultuous history with men that got me so emotional, or simply the pain of knowing that Matthew McConaughey will never be mine, but that movie gets me every time. And while I know that Kate Hudson’s character goes way over the top to push her man away, I really couldn’t stop wondering what kinds of things really send dudes running for the hills.

It is obvious I am doing something wrong – guys have been running away from me since we started playing playground tag in middle school. And now the game has long since been over, but I still can’t hold a man down…without the aid of handcuffs. But, let’s be real, that’s a whole different conversation.

I couldn’t stand the thought of sitting home alone with a chick flick for one more night so I turned to a guy to give me the answers: just what are ladies doing to send the boys packing? Read More »

PETA Proves: Vegetarians Are Hot (And Naughty)

If not eating meat will make us as hot as any of the women in this PETA ad (that was banned from the Super Bowl), we’ll empty our fridge of all animal products right now.

On second thought, our fridge only has beer and peanut butter in it, so we’re good to go. Bring on the tofu!

Rock The Look: Mixing Prints

picture-5.png

The old rule of wearing only one print at a time is boring and, thankfully, no longer applies. Mixing different patterns has become an art in fashion and is taking over the runways. It can be tricky to pair pieces with different prints together without looking mismatched or crazy like that old lady in the grocery store, but the designers who put together the clothes above (left to right: Dolce & Gabbana, Pollini, Dries Van Noten, and Prada) got it right.

Here are some easy and fun ideas for translating this trend into something you can wear every day: Read More »

The 5 Questions We Ask Everyone: Celebrity Hair Stylist, Harry Josh

Harry Josh Head ShotIf it’s one thing we’ve learned here at CC, it’s that all people are fascinating (Yes, even your econ professor). Let’s face it – people love to glimpse into the lives of other people. Disagree? Then please explain why you’re currently looking at your friend’s brother’s girlfriend’s cousin’s photos on Facebook. Or reading about the latest Lauren/Heidi dramz in this weeks’ tabloids. Yeah we thought so.

Fact is we connect to others by learning about them. And everyone has something to share (even if it is a story about that one time they had a little accident at Burger King…)

So to give you yet another reason to procrastinate, we started ‘The Five Questions We Ask Everyone’ (and five just for that one person) because we know whether we’re schmoozing with an A- list celeb or your local bartender, you’ll be equally entertained.

Last week we talked to Brody Jenner; this time College Candy spent some time talking with celebrity hair stylist and major sweetheart, Harry Josh. He’s proof in the fat-free pudding that hard work and big dreams pay off big time as he’s spends his days face to face with just about any celeb you’d want to call your BFF (or workout buddy – um hellllo Gisele Bundchen).

Harry opens up to us about how he followed his passion, his obsession with cheesy pop (I knew there were more of us out there!) and how you, dear reader, can have Gisele’s fabulous “I don’t care” hair: Read More »

Snow Day? Have Some Fun!

tray-sledding.jpgSo, most of the country is covered in about 47 feet of snow right now, which means one thing: SNOW DAY! Well, maybe for all those kids who don’t go to University of Michigan. That place doesn’t cancel classes for anything thanks to two students who sued the school for loss of tuition and ruined it for the rest of us.

Jerks.

Anyways, snow days are pretty bomb. No class? No responsibility? Lots of snow on the ground? Sweeeet.

You may see it as just another day to spend curled up on the futon with your TV and a bag of Smart Pop Kettle Korn, but I am here to tell you that it is time to throw on the snow pants (or layer 3 pairs of sweats) and get outside. Don’t treat today just like any other day off of class (by drinking Gatorade and recapping with your girls); there is much fun to be had on a college campus in the snow.

(Note: CollegeCandy does not support or condone any of the following acts. They are just things we have…heard about.)

Lunch Tray Sledding: You are gonna have to be a bit sneaky about this one, but grab a backpack and head to the caf. Grab a few lunch trays, take em back to your room and grease those suckers up with a little Pam/cooking spray. Then head out to the nearest “slope” (or some sort of hilly area on campus) and let loose. Sledding never gets old…especially when there is the thrill of breaking rules involved. Read More »

The 4 Day Diet: Taking a Look at My Eating Habits

4-day.jpgSo it’s been a week since I decided to start Dr. Ian Smith’s 4 Day Diet. I’ve completed two modules, resisted a whole lot of temptation, and successfully started the plan.

I told myself during these first two phases that I would follow the plan as strictly as I possibly could. Afterall, the beginning is the kick-start, sets the tone, and would get me into the right mindset.

The first four days (detox) consisted mostly of fruits, green veggies, brown rice, beans, legumes, and a little bit of yogurt and eggs. I never realized how great of an option (and how filling) beans were. I made a fabulous bean salad drizzled with some balsamic vinegar and lemon juice that was scrumptious and kept me full all afternoon.

The second set of four days (transition) was similar food-wise to the Detox days, but started to add back some more food. Colored veggies, proteins, even two snacks a day from a huge list in the back of the book (ranging from cottage cheese to a sweet potato to 1/2 cup fro yo etc).

I noticed the first day of detox was the hardest day all week. My body wasn’t used to no sugar (aside from the sugar in fruit) so I felt a bit sluggish, which I anticipated.

But after day one, I was bursting with energy. Read More »

We’ve teamed up with our friends at FashionPulseDaily to bring you the best of Forever 21. Every Wednesday, we’ll highlight a fabulous Forever 21 item that stands out above the rest in that over-crowded (but totally fabulous), color coordinated store. For more fashion fun, check out FashionPulseDaily.

Dresses make figuring out what to wear in the morning so much easier; especially if you’re someone like me who is always running late! I came acoss this fabulous little number, the Belted Tiered Dress, for $42 that is the perfect blend of casual, put-together chic with its knit top, elastic waist, and tiered, feather-like skirt. The black version will definitely be more appropriate for a variety of occasions, but I can’t resist the grey and purple color combination, with perhaps some thick tights underneath.

Let it Rock: The Bird, the Bee, and the Boss

warm-up-music.jpg

Another week, another new pile of CDs to sift through. I don’t know what it is about 2009, but this week’s new releases were great. Again. It didn’t matter if the artist was new, old, or really old (sorry, Billy!), they all put together some great sound that everyone should pick up and take home. Read More »
