See, I guess that's what gets to me, is that there is a "constant desire for the spotlight." That's the grain of truth here. And it can be annoying, yes. But don't then say that we're constantly craving the spotlight, and that we stick to our own, don't know how to party, and portray us as these anti-social people. I understand it comes off that way to you, from the outside, but it's the farthest thing from the truth in the world. And it doesn't even fit with the first part of your observation.

Hey, I'm Grayson, I graduated with a degree in the theatre from a very pretentious avante garde program inside of a small liberal arts school on Long Island. So while I can say that there is so much that is off about this, there is also a lot that is spot on. The classroom behavior is 100% accurate.
The social stuff... not so much. But it is certainly the way that it would appear to someone outside of a theatre department.

And yet, to anyone who knows any theatre department, this is not the stereotype at all. It's the way outsiders who have no connection their world see it. Let me clear some things up; using humor from the actual college theatre zeitfunk.

The "stick to their own" thing, is a bit ridiculous. Theatre Majors CAN NOT be antisocial creatures. Think about it- what is theatre? It's the art of people communicating. It's putting the stories of all different sorts of people on a stage and talking about them. All acting theory boils down to "Objective and Tactical Communication." ....We're trained to talk to people on a scientific level.
Theatre majors are the world's biggest exhibitionists. Hence all of the SHIRTS AND BUMPER STICKERS READING "THESPIANS- WE DO IT ON STAGE."

And because what we study is communication in the absurd and extra-daily (think about it, the events of most plays are not what happens to mundane people every day.) We are often overly DRAMATIC (WHICH DERIVES FROM "DRAMA' FOR A REASON.) AWKWARD, AND OBNOXIOUS.

We don't go to SPORTING EVENTS for two reasons: 1) JOCKS PICK ON ACTORS in High School, most of us are afraid of them. 2) WE HAVE OUR OWN sporting events, with plot lines, and conversations, and audiences who are directly engaged--- THEY'RE CALLED SHOWS. Do you go to those? Maybe you do. A lot of theatre majors do go to sporting events (usually only after freshman year, though) If you don't, stop complaining. It's a difference in tastes, not an anti-social behavior.

Also, theatre majors are BOOKED. More booked then med students, actually. Ever see one of those T-SHIRTS THAT READ "I CAN'T- I HAVE REHEARSAL." It's an honest excuse. Theatre majors in liberal arts colleges have a full 18 course load, 6 hours a day of rehearsal 6 days a week, and (depending on whether the school has a tech department or not) contract hours to be building sets and hanging lights. You get tired after 4 classes a day, how you think we felt?

And PARTIES? Do me a favor. Ask a theatre major what their parties are like. At my college- we would have the company coach give one of us the keys to the theatre, break in, get the music majors up into the sound booth to DJ, any of our friends who tended bar would serve mixed drinks all night, home brewed beer, and people would be dancing and grinding worse than a club. Jocks go to the club thinking "Maybe I'll get laid." Theatre majors go to one of our parties -knowing- "Tonight, I am going to make out with everyone. Guys, girls, maybe that piece of set that I built..." Seriously, I used to hook up with a minimum of 7 people a night. Even after public safety shut us down, the tamest party we had was a body paint party in my friend's dorm. Most college kids, unless they're from NYU and have the whole city as their playground, have these kinds of theatre parties. Ask around. Please. In fact, I once saw a PORN WHO'S OPENING LINE WAS "YOU KNOW NO ONE PARTIES LIKE A THEATRE MAJOR."

And most theatre majors... are fucking KINKY. We don't even consider handcuffs naughty, you buy a pair the same day you register for classes.

PLEASE - the author says controversial things to get hits on the page. It's a ploy and it works.

Obviously none of the stereotypes are 100% true. I think that the only thing remotely true about this one is the bit about reading out loud well. And that's not even a fault.... MOVING ON!

The part about "sticking to their own kind"--- Well, guess what, you can't tell who majors in drama at a party, and since the "biggest parties on campus" include multitudes of strangers, I'm betting you don't realize how many thespians are dancing along side you... (chances are they dance better than you do, anyways) There's nothing "chill" about drama kids. They'll be the ones singing along loudest to that Spice Girls song that the DJ plays, but they won't sound like a tone-deaf chorus, unlike you and your screaming cohorts.

My drama teacher once told me that true artists make no apology for their craft. There are certain things in life that you need to do to hone your skill. It sometimes will mean looking like a loon and going out of your comfort zone. Honestly, we have to practice lines SOMEWHERE. It's not like there is this colony out there where you can ship us to so we can all be crazy together. You can't let a few stares stop you... And sometimes it pays to be a diva, especially when fighting for what you need.

Also @ Kristina:

Maybe you need to figure out why you're so uncomfortable with the spotlight yourself before you bitch about other people not minding it. Theater people don't go around trying to be invisible. They're comfortable with themselves and they don't inhibit their actions every second of the day. Try it. Liberate yourself. Unless your heart is naturally spiteful and grouchy, leading you to begrudge people their very personalities... well, then, you're just being your perfectly resentful self. Go on hating others for being who they are without apology. See how much fulfillment that brings you.

I am so annoyed with people getting mad at these. The only reason people normally get ticked off is because they don't want to admit these profiles are accurate.
I know this is supposed to be a joke, but I think it's a bit ridiculous that one of your reasons they are annoying is "The Drama Major will read with pauses, motions, and may even add different character voices, if the passage calls for it." I would much rather everyone read this way. It's much better than the boring monotonous tone most people read with that makes you want to fall asleep and not have any interest in what the class is reading. Maybe if everyone read the way drama majors do class readings would be more interesting and we'd actually want to pay attention.
