I’m Torn: Uggs Edition
February 9, 2009 Posted in Reality
[Life isn't black and white. As much as we wish we simply loved or hated things, there is often that whole annoying gray area in the middle. Like, we hate how Walmart treats its employees...but we love the low prices! Or, we love how that boy makes us laugh....but we hate that he has no motivation in life. Damn you, gray area; you make decision-making that much more complicated!
There are so many difficult choices in life (do we love or hate tequila??), so we thought we'd sort through 'em right here. Every week we will discuss another issue we are torn up about. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section!]
You’ve heard it all before…
“Uggs are so cute and comfy!” Girl with Uggs on.
“Uggs put the ‘ug’ in ugly.” Guy giving the girl a strange look.
I can see both sides and I’m completely torn:
Love Em:
Uggs are definitely one of the most comfortable types of shoes out there. And unlike the apparantly comfy-but-ugly Crocs (gag!), they actually match your outfit, and can be a cute addition to your winter wardrobe. Uggs come in lots of different colors and patterns, and although they’re a little on the expensive side, they last FOR.E.VER. (OK, maybe not forever, but I’ve had mine for 3 years and they’re as ridiculously soft as ever.)
Loathe Em?
They are a bit clunky and awkwardly-shaped. (But it’s all for good reason, right? Why so chunky, my dear Uggs? To hold all the warm and fuzzy fur inside, of course!) They also look eerily similar to the bedroom-slipper your mom might wear, due to the sheepskin outer layer. (But that’s what makes them warm!) And, obviously, they add quite a bit of unflattering mass to the calves, making even the skinniest leg look a little chunky.
It’s a love/hate relationship between me and my (4 pairs of) Uggs, but that doesn’t seem to stop me from buying and wearing them 6 months out of the year. Still, I have to wonder if the warmth and comfiness is really worth it all….and why on earth girls wear them with mini skirts.
Tell us what you're thinking...

I loathe Uggs. Especially girls that wear the grey athletic sweatpants (you know the one with the cuffs at the bottom) with Uggs. I'm from Canada and it's cold here for a large part of the year so I realize wearing Uggs is unfortunately inevitable, but there are SOO MANY other cute boots out there. Seriously. They're also warm.

Personally, I can't stand them. I live in New England, home of terrible winters, and I have an adorable pair of boots that match my outfits and keep my feet really warm. The boots I have also cost a lot less than Uggs and I've had them for 2 years now and they still look new.

As much as I loathe the look of them, they are so comfy! They were the ONLY shoes I could wear when I strained my ankle!

I love them, I live in Canada and they are the comfiest and warmest boots out there! Yes there are better looking/cheaper boots but they don't keep you feet as warm or are they as comfortable.

Do you realize that you've probably spent $800 on four pairs of shoes? I find that ridiculous!

i like uggs even though i don't own any. they are like birkenstocks, although they're expensive it is worth it to buy the real thing. i just hate when i see some girl's poor uggs all black and dirty from stomping through water and snow. shoes like that have to be sealed with leather protectant, ladies. take care of your $100+ boots

I go to school in the Midwest (where my campus gets dumped with snow for a good 4-5 months of the year) and I've owned a pair of Uggs for about 3 years now. I do agree that they are not the most attractive shoe, but they are definitely warm and comfortable! For practicality purposes, I would say they are worth it. However, I didn't spray mine this winter with the leather protector or whatever and somehow the top of the foot just cracked and now I have a giant rip in the leather part of the boot. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?

I don't care, I don't care that they are ugly. Boston is freaking cold and I like my tootsies nice and warm. I don't wear them when there's 8 feet of snow, I have my equally hideous bean boots for that but when its freezing you can't beat uggs. My footwear is ugly and I'm proud!

I think uggs are so cute on girls, especially girls in mini skirts. I love removing a girls uggs along with the rest of her clothing when we are about to have sex and having the smell of her uggz on her feet while I suck her toes.
