I know this is an older article, but I have to disagree with Lucy and Erin. I'm a southern girl as well, and I don't think it's TOO weird to wear black to a wedding. I mean, it is a little odd, but depending on the style of wedding it is perfectly acceptable. For instance, a night time wedding or a winter wedding. Yes, I think of colors too for summer or spring time weddings, but a cute black cocktail dress works as well.

I also agree with Lucy. Then again, I'm also from Texas. I just think wearing black to a wedding is so weird. When I think of weddings, I definitely think of color. If you come down here, don't wear black to a wedding, it just looks like you're in mourning.

Hey Lucy, maybe in a Southern daytime wedding black isn't the best op- but that's kind of a given. Hot, sunny weather makes people want to wear color. I think black is perfectly acceptable at a wedding, especially if it's a cooler season and indoors. Black is classy. When in doubt, dress it up with a splash of color- I wore a sleek black dress with bright red heels to my BFF's wedding, and cleared with her first. I got a TON of compliments.

Where are you from? Don't wear black to a Southern daytime wedding, people WILL look at you funny. I think all black to a wedding is rude unless it's a very formal, night time wedding. Dresses with black patterns, like a black and white floral, are more acceptable, but daytime weddings call for something lighter.

Also, disagree on the gift-giving as well. There's plenty of things you can buy a marrying couple without a registry- no need to resort to writing a check! But again, I'm from the South and I've never seen anyone do a "money dance" at a wedding either. I cannot even imagine!
