Life After College: Preparing For the Future

packingMy past few weeks at home have been a whirlwind of doctor appointments. Since no one knows when I’ll have health insurance again, I’m cramming in all my possible doctors. It gets rough after awhile keeping track of all the different types of doctors and protocols. Before I knew it, I was sitting stark naked in the dentist chair one day and fully clothed with a paper gown on top of my outfit at the gynecologist the next day. It keeps my life exciting and, more importantly, it keeps my doctors on their toes.

However, home hasn’t been all mole checks and cholesterol tests. It’s also been a lot of cleaning. I’m moving to New York in less than a week and I’m slowly coming to the realization that I will never be home for college breaks ever again. After this it’s all long weekends and feel-sorry-for-myself unemployment weeks home. So I’m attempting to clean out my closet and keep only the things I actually want to bring with me.

But my problem is that I keep everything just-in-case. Like what if corduroy jackets come back in style? What if my legs shrink and that skirt can cover my butt again? What if I lose an arm in a tragic accident and I regret throwing away that one strap tank top? It’s quite a challenge to give away clothes when every time I put something in the salvation army pile, I pull it back out again.  So I had to make a rule that I can’t keep anything that I wore in high school. And because I have the body of a twelve year old boy, a lot still fits. So far all I’ve managed to give away without regret is my Relay for Life shirts. It’s a good cause but the shirts are just unflattering.

And on top of all that my mother thinks I’m a home computer consultant available 24/7. I was in the middle of debating whether peasant shirts will come back in style when she rushed in demanding I figure out why her computer wasn’t working. It’s usually just a simple issue of making sure the computer is plugged in and the monitor is on.

Between all my medical appointments, my mother,’s computer “problems” and my wardrobe makeover I’m starting to realize that not only is moving really tiresome, but it’s also really happening. I’m leaving my home and for the first time I have no idea when I’m coming back.
