This is the first time I've come across this site and being one that will be interning God knows where next summer in NYC this blog/diary is an excellent view on what interning really is like. I bookmarked this so I can come back to this and see how your intern progresses. And to everyone acting crazy about her bitching, shut up already. Yeah she should be grateful and understand interns do mind numbing work blah blah blah but I'm pretty sure standing in front of a fax or copy machine all day ANYWHERE you'd have the same feelings of "Wow, this sucks ass!" lol Good job girl, keep it going.

Wow you all definitely took this too seriously. Clearly she's happy to have her internship and is just feeling her way out. Clearly she's not dumb, no need to shove the idea of "not having mommy's credit card anymore" down her throat.

Today I have spent $4 for the subway, $5 for my lunch(I splurged) and I will spend $1.50 for a bottle of beer at my local bodega before making myself a $0 dinner at home with my roommies. I'm no hater but really, $80? Make yourself coffee(I love my french press and beans bought in bulk), carry water(or better yet, doesn't your office have a cooler?) pack your lunch(I'm lucky, my boss usually buys) the bandaids however are essential but really, a strawberry mojito or two? Make friends with my good friends, yeungling, PBR and high life. Oh and a little thing I like to call happy hour, 2 beers $6? Works for me. NYC doesn't have to bankrupt you(or your parents if you're lucky enough to have them foot the bill, I don't). Be responsible, someday mommy's credit card won't be there.

okay, making copies and faxing and getting coffee sucks. Whether you're an intern or not. You have every right to complain.

Second, I can point out four ways to reduce your NYC costs. Trust me, as a full time unpaid intern in NYC as well, its important to avoid Starbucks at all costs. yeah, the 75 cent coffee on the corner is basically glorified water, but it does the trick. cheaper. And if you aren't willing to give up your starbucks, trying brewing your own coffee at home and just taking a thermos. Also, not only are water bottles eco-friendly, but cheaper. We're not in mexico. NYC has better tap water than most cities. Also, don't you work at a magazine? Surely they have copies of old issues lying around...trust me, expanding your knowledge of not only the magazine, but the issues within it on your free time will always get you extra kudos from your boss. Besides, you work at the magazine, their stuff has got to be pretty entertaining.

And i have to say you are very lucky. With a credit card that the rents pay for, at least. Which is why I think you complaining about the money issue is kind of insane, really. Perhaps your parents should be complaining instead. I hardly think they would be sympathetic to your problems in that department. I know I'm not.

Janelle,

I think you missed the part where I said that I'm doing some really cool stuff in addition to making copies and faxing things. Have a sense of humor! I'm just playing around. I wouldn't even bother writing about my internship at this magazine if I wasn't proud of it, and I promise you that my sarcastic attitude is only for collegecandy, and not for the office. My attitude happens to be really positive, I'm putting myself out there and helping any editor in need, and already winning praise for all that I'm doing to contribute to this publication. And yes - my parents do pay for my credit card. So what?

Here come the haters!
She's allowed to vent. Even if she should be "Grateful" for having an internship, she's allowed to complain. Have you never complained in your lives? Pretty sure you should be grateful for everything YOU have, too.

My god you sound like a brat! What did you think you'd be doing as an intern?! People like you are what is wrong with this generation! You're too good to make copies and send faxes? You're a freaking intern. That's what interns do! Your sense of entitlement amazes me.

And since you mention that this internship is unpaid, I assume that taxi and those mojitos were purchased with a credit card that mommy and daddy pay for?

Grow the eff up, get over yourself. If your attitude in the office is anything like your attitude in this article your employer will want nothing to do with you after your internship and neither will any other company worth a damn!

I'm sorry but you can absolutely not complain. Because of the economy right now, that people in competitive majors are not even able to get unpaid internships since so many people are out of work. I am at the top of my class and trilingual and have applied for over 120 jobs and internships and so far have had only one interview, and it was information only with no intent to hire.
And please, copying is a problem for the intern? They are NOT that hard to use, are you mentally disabled? Who do you think should be doing this for you?
Finally, get a handle on your spending. Now is the time to cut back on your spending habits, not to make excuses to take cabs or buy cocktails. I'm sure your parents would appreciate you taking some responsibility for your actions at the very least.
