Weekly Ten: I Heart NYC

July 27, 2009 9:00 am     Posted in Cool Stuff  Melanie - Northeastern University g+ page

In honor of CollegeCandy’s cocktail hour this week, the Weekly Ten will be on the 10 reasons we adore NYC! As a recent resident to NYC’s Upper West Side, here’s my take on my new favorite city…

10. Last Call- 3:30 AM.
This means you have plenty of time to dance on bars. If time is money, then take that money and spend it on shots of Patron.

9. The boys are BANGIN’
Is there anything hotter than an NYC boy? From the Columbia law students (hi, yum, slamshows) to the prepster Upper East Siders (hi, Chuck Bass), the city has a gaggle of gorgeous gentlemen. Beware of guidos.

8. SHOPPING.
Sample Sales, Saks and SHOES SHOES & MORE SHOES. Aughhhh! I want it all!

7. Celebs, celebs, celebs!
Okay, so every day after work I walk past Rockefeller Center, desperately looking for Alec Baldwin. Come out wherever you are, Jack Donaghy!

6. Slamming Nightlife
The hot, trendy bars (like the one we’ll be partying at); more clubs than you can think of; bars with crazy themes… there’s something for everyone in this here city.

5. Yummy foods
Magnolia, Serendipity, Dylan’s Candy Bar, Crumbs… and that’s just dessert! 24/7 diners for all your drunk munchie needs and New York pizza? Need I say more?

4. The Sports
Kidding. Screw the Yankees, most overrated team ever. Not to mention the travesty that is the Mets. But, both the new stadiums are worth checking out. Particularly if they’re playing the Cleveland Indians.

3. Central Park
In the middle of the craziest city that never sleeps, you have one of the most peaceful, beautiful parks around. Did I mention all the DOGGIES everywhere?! AHHHHH so cute!

2. The Culture
The MoMa has free entry on Fridays from 4-8, not to mention the Met, Lincoln Center, Guggenheim… After coming to NYC, you’ll practically be an art historian.

1. It’s just the freaking best city in the world.
I mean, really. NYC is what it’s all about. The coolest little Island that packs a punch. Sex and the City, Seinfeld, SNL, David Letterman, How I Met Your Mother, Friends and now Conan all agree: New York City rocks.

Melanie– As always great read, but how about Vegas, No last call, in fact that word isn't even in our vocabulary.

The boys are bangin as I live here. LOL

Shop we get a new place every six months.

Celebs live here, or come here to party cause what happens in Vegas is supposed to stay here.

Nightlife, are you kidding me, TAO, Tryst, The Bank, XS and a new Casino every year.

Our parks have the water that shoots out of the ground for the kids and dog parks all in one.

The culture, well NYC has us there, and we don't have pro sports.

    We offer a lot here.

NYC is my favorite place in the world. And even though I've been living abroad in London this summer, I have kept it very close to my heart.

My favorite parts of NYC …

    - Sugar Sweet Sunshine cupcakes (on Rivington, on the Lower East Side): They are the best cupcakes around, way better than Crumbs, way better than Magnolia. They were so good, I brought a dozen back with me when I left NYC last summer to go back home.

    - Schiller's Liquor Bar (also on Rivington in the LES), best food and best alcohol around. They may serve you if you are under age …

    - China Town, enough said

    - Street performers, crazy people on the subway, and all other sorts of free entertainment that passes you by

    - The way the city feels in the summer verses the winter or any other time of the year. It really comes alive.

Yeah, Erich, I live in Vegas too. Sorry, but Vegas sucks. The boys here…wait, what boys? It's so difficult to meet locals and when I do, it's disappointing. Shopping is good if you like spending A LOT (i.e. forum shops or the fashion show mall) and as for the rest…well boys and clothes only matter. lol

I'v been in NYC for a year and one month now, I don't think I'll leave the city until I have kids, I don't want to be dragging strollers on the subway and be that bitch who tells people to get up so their 3 year old can have a seat on the suway. I love living here, I live in Hells Kitchen, can i just say it's really awesome because you can be in your pajamas and order great food and have it delivered. Love the city. Even as a larger woman I get hit on all the time, that never happened in the small farming community I lived in or even at college, talk about self esteem boost, I'm no longer hating my body.

Since everyone had a city that they're loyal to, I think that you should do a series on why all the major cities in the US are amazing places.

Kaitey– You say the boys here are disappointing, maybe cause you're dating boys, not real men. LOL. As far as everything else, when I first got here 3 years ago, I thought it sucked too. But now that I live here and have been here for a minute, I don't know that I would want to live somewhere else.

BTW– I would say 75% of the women I meet here are a disappointment too. So I think it goes both ways.

NYC rocks! Chicago is overrated and way too cold. The hottest chicks in the country live in NY. This time of year is awesome cuz they're really stylin', when the warm weather comes, they're bearing more skin, short mini skirts and tank tops, cleavage, oh yeah!

NYC fucking sucks. Are you kidding me? As someone from Southern CA, Newport Beach to be exact, all you East Coast idiots crack me up. NYC has terrible weather and is literally a concrete wasteland. People there have shitty personalities and you can get punched in the face for even having the nerve to look at someone in the eyes. Everyone thinks they are so fucking important and are in such a hurry to get back to their 100 sq foot apartment it is hilarious how dumb they are. There are way too many minorities which bring down the value of the city tremendously. They are worthless. Southern CA and Newport Beach make NYC look fucking terrible. The people are richer, the weather is nicer, the scenary is amazing, everyone is much better looking, and on and on.

@ Marissa– As someone who originates from So Cal, HB actually. You sound like the person from NY you are describing. An obnoxious bitch in which reality hasn't set in yet. Maybe it's your attitude that makes them treat you that way.

Boston Lovers, you know I have a soft spot for Boston too! Gotta rep Northeastern. I am adoring New York though, despite their huge rivalry with Boston.

As for Vegas, I've been going just about every year since I was a baby. My first vacation (age 6 months!) was there. I do adore Vegas, but I don't think I could handle living there. Way too many vacationers.

Cali, honey. You need to take a hit of that medicinal marijuana you have so readily available, and chill out, brah. Do love some California, don't love that 'tude.

I second Chicago! Such good food, and it's so much cheaper than NYC. I also love me some San Fran but my wallet doesn't.

How about the improv? The only city that can rival us us ironically the second city. You should check out Saturday Night Improv at Identity. It's an early show, so there's plenty of time to go out drinking and dancing after all the laughter!

Tell us what you're thinking...
