After slaving away on that perfect resume and writing what feels like hundreds of cover letters, you finally landed the big job interview. Yay for you! You’ve wowed someone with your accomplishments and degree, and now it’s time to blow them away them in person.

This is a pretty big deal.

You’ve heard it before, but you only get one chance at a first impression so it’s important to make sure that you are 110% prepared for the big day. You will undoubtedly be one of many interviewing for the given position, which means you need to go above and beyond all those other people to prove why you are the best suited for the job.

A Gal’s Guide to Comic-Con

sdcc-1Attention geeks, nerds, dorks, and fangirls of the world: prepare yourselves, because Comic-Con International kicks off  this Thursday, July 23! (Yes, I know it’s exciting. Grab a paper bag and breathe.)

For those not in the know, the San Diego Convention Center becomes a mecca every summer for fans of comics, science fiction, fantasy, and a lot of stuff in between. But even if you’re not a fan of any of those things (or a self-proclaimed geek like me!), Comic-Con has expanded over the years to encompass whatever’s hot in pop culture.

So if you’re going to be in SoCal from July 23-26 and can get yourself a pass, here are some reasons why you should check out Comic-Con (and if you can’t go this year, definitely mark your calendars for 2010):

1.   Check out upcoming films way before they’re released and hear from the filmmakers and cast.
The movie panels are a big hit each year, and 2009 isn’t going to be any different. Dozens of movies are going to be previewed at Comic-Con, but here’s just a sampling of what’s on the schedule next week: Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Avatar, Zombieland, 2012, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus (Heath Ledger’s last film), Astro Boy…and, of course, Twilight. Yes, the cast is going to be there. Including RPattz.

Cue fangirl screams.

2.    Sit in on discussions and upcoming season previews with the cast and crew of your favorite TV shows.
Get the scoop on TV’s most popular shows from the writers themselves (and the hott-with-a-double-“t” cast members!). Shows that will be represented include Smallville, True Blood, Heroes, Dollhouse, Family Guy, Chuck, Lost, 24, and Dexter. If I could just see Stephen Moyer, Milo Ventimiglia, Joss Whedon, and Kiefer Sutherland, I would be able to die a happy, happy woman.

3.   It’s not just about the shows, movies, and comics – there’s intellectual discussion to be found!
Comic-Con will be hosting several discussion panels with college professors, writers, and other experts on everything from parody in art to the anthropology of Star Trek. There are a number of panels relating to women in pop culture and comics specifically, so put your thinking caps on, ladies! Read More »

The Things Maybe We Shouldn’t Be Sharing…

girls sharing

Upon some recent discussion with my guy friends, I’ve come to realize that we girls may just be a little bit “too close.” I happen to be one of those people blessed with an intimate group of girlfriends, and therefore we talk about everything from the specific color name of our nail polish to the exact millisecond of how long our most recent sack session lasted.

However, upon stepping back a bit and really paying attention to what I was saying, I’ve begun to wonder if there is such thing as too much information sharing. Even if it never gets back to your guy, is it alright to share everything? Below are the key things that, looking back, I’m thinking should just remain between a lady and her man. Read More »

Why You Should…Be More Selfish

ilovemepng.jpgThere’s a great many things to do and places to see in this world of ours.  As humans, our lives are pretty short (and if you party like I do, it’s probably going to be even shorter).  So we have to prioritize!  We have brains for a reason and that reason is…reasoning (well, at least some of us use them for that purpose: see comment about partying above).  Let me be your voice of reason as I show you all the things you should (or shouldn’t be….) be doing right here, right now.

One of the primary lessons of preschool and Kindergarten education is about sharing with others.  Share your milk and cookies, share your toys, share your nap mat, etc.  Growing up with a younger sister, I had these lessons pounded into my head both at school and at home.  That Easy-Bake-Oven cake that I worked so hard on (c’mon, I was six)?  I had to share it with my sister, who did nothing but play with MY Barbies while I slaved over my one-bulb oven.

Well, maybe I’m done with sharing and sacrificing my efforts for others.  Maybe it’s time to be more selfish.  After Googling around for some articles to back up my selfish ambitions, I found that it’s a good thing to be selfish (sometimes).  I think everyone should try it!  Here are the reasons why you should be more selfish:

Less Stress – As college women, we have a million things going on: if we’re not writing three papers for tomorrow, we’re helping our friend move out of their dorm and into their new summer apartment.  What would happen if we (selfishly) decided not to do some of those things? Of course, you do need to do all your schoolwork and whatnot, but maybe you don’t have to plan your friend’s wedding for her.  You also don’t have to go shopping with your sister or watch your boyfriend play community soccer when you could be relaxing in the bath. Wardrobe Wish List: Lululemon Speed Shorts

lulu shorts1 lulu shorts 2

I don’t know about you, but wearing cute exercise clothes definitely motivates me to work out and that’s where the sweet new Lululemon Speed Shorts come in.

Yes, you read that right, ladies. Lululemon, creator of the most amazing pants in the universe, is introducing a new line specifically for runners/people who get out of the yoga studio!  Now we can reserve our one pair of Groove pants for Saturday nights (what? They make your butt look amazing) and hit the gym in something a little more refreshing Sunday morning.

They come in 11 different colors, plus patterns like stripes and plaid. Just like everyone’s favorite Nike Tempo shorts that are frequently seen in the gym and around campus, Lululemon’s Speed Shorts feature built in undies. But obviously it’s their other features that make them worth the extra $20 (cuz Lulu stuff is never cheap). They’re chafe-resistant, flat seamed, and have a secure pocket on the lower back to stash your key and ID whether you’re in the gym or on the road. Plus they’re shorter (and just plain cuter) than many other running shorts. Read More »

I’m Torn: Strapless Bras

strapless braEvery self-respecting college girl has one (or three): a strapless bra.  Without this little piece of lingerie magic, we would be without proper support in our skankiest dresses and tube tops (and whatever else needs to show a lot of shoulder and not a lot of bra strap).  Some of us need need them to keep us supported during times when we can’t support ourselves and others need them to shape and pad us when our non-existent boobs aren’t enough.

Yet, as much as I love the strapless bra, I hate it.  The reality is that bras were made with straps for a reason and without them, it’s an epic fail waiting to happen.

While I own my fair share of so-called strapless wonders, I’m torn as to whether I really need them or not…

Love it:
There’s nothing quite as tacky as bra straps slipping out of tops.  I mean, it’s such an easy fix, so it’s annoying when people are walking around all strappy and whatnot.  I don’t care how nice your bra is, I don’t want to see the straps. And, no, those clear ones don’t cut it either.

In this regard, strapless bras work wonders.  They fit under your slinky tops without revealing to the general public that you buy your bras at Kmart (I only have, like, two from there…) AND they provide a step up from going without a bra, in that they stop the floppin’ and maybe provide some (in my case, much needed) push up action.

Also, when I first put a strapless bra on, I get to dance around and pretend I’m a burlesque performer.  Strapless bras have an aura of secret sexiness about them that makes me feel like I’m seduction on a stick.  They’re definitely a confidence booster (and my confidence definitely needs a boost once I look in the mirror and realize that my new, delicate dress really does make my arms look ginormous). And That’s The Way It Is: Remembering Walter Cronkite

560px-CronkitenasaOn Saturday, we lost yet another true American legend: former CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite. Those of us who were not alive during the 60s and 70s, the heyday of his career, can’t completely understand what made Cronkite such an icon, but we can all feel the sorrow around us as a result of his passing.

So why was Cronkite billed as the most trusted man in American during his tenure at CBS? If you look at his résumé, it is quite impressive; Cronkite reported on several historic (and tragic) events, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. His brand of journalism – “report the news, don’t become it” – has been praised by his contemporaries as well as by today’s top journalists. His coverage of the following events makes him a journalism legend:

Kennedy assassination
Cronkite is perhaps best known for breaking the news of the Kennedy assassination live on November 22, 1963. The footage of the broadcast is fascinating to watch; in spite of the nature of the story (as it is the first time such news was broadcast on live television), Cronkite maintained his composure and reported as a journalist should, although there was noticeable emotion in his voice after he read the official AP bulletin reporting that JFK was dead.

Vietnam War coverage

In February of 1968, Cronkite reported on the aftermath of the Tet Offensive from Vietnam. When he returned, he filed an editorial report confirming that the situation in Vietnam was not close to victory, but rather a difficult stalemate out of which the U.S. would have to negotiate. After the story aired, President Lyndon Johnson reportedly said, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost Middle America.” Johnson did not seek reelection that year. Read More »

Body Blog: The Healthy Way to Detox

woman_drinking_water

Before you dismiss this as just another article about the master cleanse, please read on!

Studies have proven that liquid cleanses, like the juice cleanse, the infamous master cleanse, and even the water with lemon cleanse, are more harmful to the body than beneficial. Probably because girls tend to do them for weeks, even months at a time, to lose weight.

We forget that the purpose of a cleanse is to help rid the body of toxins from processed foods and from our environment, not to become anorexic for a week.

Every day our body is exposed to chemicals from car exhaust, pollution, and the very lotion we apply to our skin. We breathe in harmful particles floating in the air. We eat fruit that has been soaked in pesticides and meat that has been injected with antibiotics.

Our incredible bodies constantly filter out all of these toxins on an a daily basis — it is a self-healing, self-renewing and self-cleansing organism. However, all of this can be too much and we find ourselves feeling sluggish and unhealthy. This indicates that your body needs some help. A holistic detox is the best method.

Here’s how: Read More »
