While there are some select areas of the world where problems do exist, Malaysia’s palm oil industry – where much of the world’s palm oil is grown – has taken the lead in profound conservation efforts. Malaysia is committed to using agricultural practices that conserve the rainforests and wildlife. Its efforts have successfully stopped aggressive plantation expansion and have held oil palm-planted areas to stable levels for the past decade. All oil palm-planted areas in Malaysia are highly regulated and Malaysian law requires that all oil palm plantations and farms are on land that doesn't involve recent deforestation.

Further, there is even an international group called the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (see: http://www.rspo.org) that promotes the growth and use of sustainable oil palm products, and has started to certify plantations selling sustainable palm.
