Welcome back to The Rival Rundown! If you’ve always wanted to give props to your school on CC, now’s your chance! Shoot us an email explaining what’s awesome and unique about your school (or what stinks about Rival U) at rivalrundown@collegecandy.com!
This week, we take a look at the opponents in the nation’s most notorious holy war–no, not the mission in Iraq, but the rivalry between Boston College and Notre Dame, America’s premier Catholic universities. Besides giving mad props to the Pope, these two institutions share a common interest in superior athletics, academics, and intense fan-dom. The Holy War refers to the quasi-annual football game between the schools (the only Catholic universities to play NCAA D1-A ball), and the fierce competitiveness between the two. Let the pillaging begin!
1. Mascot Matchup
BC – The Golden Eagles can be seen emblazoned on every Superfan shirt and bumper-sticker in Beantown.
Notre Dame - South Bend, Indiana is home to the famed Fighting Irish–the mascot championed in media from The West Wing (President Bartlet was an alum) to the football film classic, Rudy.
Three credits to: Notre Dame (extra points for high media recognition).
2. Holy War Stats
BC - has won 9 out of 18 games.
Notre Dame - has also won 9 games!
Three Credits to: It’s a tie!
3. Local Attractions
BC - Located in Chestnut Hill, MA, Boston College isn’t actually in Boston, but a suburb. It’s still within the Boston transit system, and is home to the Mall at Chestnut Hill (where you can find all of your favorite upscale retailers, including Kate Spade, Sephora, Barney’s and Bloomingdale’s) and of course, all of the celebrated Gothic architecture on campus!
Notre Dame – Though South Bend, Indiana is more than a stone’s throw from any major city, it is home to a variety of cultural establishments. Visit the Potawatomi Zoo and the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association for some entertainment around town.
Three credits to: BC for it’s proximity to Boston and terrific shopping options!
4. Ass-kicking Alumni
BC – Doug Flutie (NFL quarterback–remember Flutie Flakes?), Amy Poehler, John Kerry, Elisabeth Hasselbeck
Notre Dame – Joe Montana, Jerome Bettis (both football), Condoleeza Rice, Regis Philbin.
Three credits to: Notre Dame, for producing the cream of the crop in everything from sports to government to media.
5. Acceptance Rate Agony
BC – 26.2% for the class of 2012
Notre Dame – 26.7% for the class of 2012
Three credits to: Almost too close to call, but BC by a nose!
And the diploma goes to: For only the second time in Rival Rundown history, it’s a tie! Just proves that there are never any winners in a Holy War! God is with (both of) you.

I have a deep seated hatred for ND (which makes September 12th, 2009 the best day of my year), so BC will always be a winner in my book. And Clinton Kelly is only icing on that bible loving cake.

Yeah right!!!! The only category they would really win in is Local Attractions. The only redeeming thing about South Bend (although the nightly muggings and drive-bys are classic) is the famous Chocolate Cafe!
ND > BC. I got into both, didn’t even bother visiting BC. And I think we have something like… 11 national championships. BC? 0.
Also, Lauren- that was some great refereeing going on on the 12th. I don’t think it totally decided the outcome of the game at all. Nope.
WE ARE ND!!

Totally agree, Taylor. Seriously Lauren, I wouldn’t boast too much about that win with those kind of calls. Not to mention the fact that the Michigan football program has a dirty cheater for a head coach.
But back to the original topic, ND wins hands down. BC = Backup College and everyone knows it.
Do love Boston though

Why is academics not a category here? You know, the main reason people go to college? ND is ranked in the top 20 with the number 2 undergraduate business program in the entire country! How does BC compete with that?? Yeah, it doesn’t.

Notre Dame hasn’t won a national championship in forever but they still cling on to their “11 National Championships.” Those were so long ago you couldn’t even throw a forward pass. BC has a national championship in the 40s but we don’t talk about it because it doesn’t matter. Welcome to reality.
Also, South Bend is one of the worst places in America. It’s in Indiana for one, and there are about as many mobile homes as there are students. They hold on to their football culture because there is, truly, NOTHING else to brag about. Not one thing.
BC has them beat by a long shot. Notre Dame has nice stories about how awesome it used to be back before any of us were alive but nothing relevant to today’s world. Come on meow.

Great point, Lindsey. You all can bring up football because it’s maybe the only thing that BC comes sliiiightly close to even being on the same level as ND. Nowadays anyways. Everyone knows that we have a legendary football history but we can disregard that for now. Reputation, academics, alumni networking, etc. – all so much better at ND. I can’t think of anyone who would rate a degree from BC as being more prestigous than one from ND, unless they’re a BC grad of course. And yeah, BC is close to Boston but when I was there it took me over an hour to get to the city and you can get to Chicago from ND in 1.5 so I really wouldn’t rank the location factor too highly. I’d also mention the fact that BC calls itself Catholic but really is super liberal, although I know someone would bring up the whole Obama at ND thing. But hey, at least he came here first.

BC is a Tier 1 college according to US News and World Report – same as ND. So the fact that you can’t think of anyone who would rank a degree from BC as being more prestigious than one from ND is ridiculous. In some cases, such as the business school, our student are recruited in the same ranks as the Ivy Leagues. BC has has more Rhodes Scholars in the past decade than Notre Dame, too. Notre Dame is great, as well, but you’re making my point for me. You have blind devotion to a school in the middle of nowhere with a nice bedtime story about football back when in World War 2. That’s great.
Also, BC is most certainly not 1 hour from Boston. It’s partially in Boston. Get on the train going inbound next time and you’ll be surprised at how quickly you find the city. You won’t, however, find a bunch of ramblers, townies and Walmarts. Those would be in South Bend. Boston has a college scene, arts scene, young professionals scene, sports scene…I’d keep going but I want you to tell me what South Bend has. Please.
BC is ultra-liberal? Do you even know what that means? If you can make a case for why a top tier university that is run by a high-ranking Catholic priest is ultra-liberal I’d be glad to hear it.

At some point this week, exercise stopped being something I had to do and started being something I wanted to do. I’m honestly not sure what changed. Maybe it was the physical pain and exhaustion I felt after Irish dancing at a pre-St. Patrick’s Day event last weekend. And then watching all my old friends performing on St. Patrick’s Day, so full of energy, making it all look so easy.
