Some Idiot’s Bright Idea: Let’s Cancel Summer

DSC01221.JPG

Studying on the beach? HELL NO.

WOAH. Stop right there. Hooooold up. Wait a minute. Don’t go there cuz I ain’t wit’ it.

I can’t believe my ears.

I just heard the worst idea in the history of idea-making and I swear I am not overreacting.

A US Senator, Lamar Alexander (yes, please send him nasty letters and kick him on the street), stated in a recent Newsweek Article that “an educational schedule of 3 months of summer is not relevant in today’s world and [college] students should take more credit hours and graduate in 3 years, saving 25% in tuition costs.”

I have so many problems with this one sentence I don’t even know where to begin.

I guess I should start with deep breathing into a brown paper bag. And eating a brownie.

Ok, now that I’m somewhat composed let’s start with Mr. Alexander’s cost argument. It’s an obvious fact that our parents, our own bank accounts, and out future selves for the next 15 years, are being raped of any and all money we make or will make to pay for college. But in the grand scheme of things, how much less of a burden is it to pay $120,000 versus $160,000?

Either way, the financial aspect of college has all of us students spurting premature wrinkles, and I’d rather spend one more year of my life tailgating, eating diner food at 4 am, and partying the night away before I have to face the fat, red negative number in my bank account.

Plus, doesn’t this guy realize that just because you cram 4 years of work into 3 doesn’t necessarily mean you will pay less? Summer classes are an extra cost outside of your tuition, and the majority of schools charge per class, so this will not save the student any money. Not to mention that some colleges even charge students for each credit they take above a certain number during a semester.

Alexander argument: denied.

And then there’s the stress. Does Senator Lamar wants us to freakin’ die?! Five classes is a full course load. Many of us have taken six; the really ambitious (or really unfortunate) have taken seven. It is physically impossible to take this many classes, 6 semesters in a row, without a break. Is this his secret attempt to kill off all the students before they hit the job market to lessen the competition and save his own ass?

And, dear Lamar, when do you expect students to work to earn the money they need to pay tuition? And what about the ever-important college internships? In this competitive market getting experience through a summer internship is vital to securing a job post graduation. How are we supposed to fit that in with the 27 credits we’ll all be forced to take each semester?!

Bottom line: our lives are already way over-packed. We are stressed out, burnt out, running all over the place, and sometimes the only thing that keeps us sane is that 3 month break from classes looming in the future.

I’m glad this guy got to go to school and balance his internships, classes, and fun without having to have people stress him out by threatening to cut out his summer vacation. Perhaps he should stop being an ass and let us have our college glory. Four years already goes fast enough

What do you guys think? Is this man off his rocker?!

I think he’s right. Honestly, I would rather graduate in four years and avoid getting a real job for as long as possible. I am not saying I want less summer AT ALL. But he has a point. Most classes you take as a freshman are irrelevant anyway and while I realize that you’re “exploring” options, as I am, I think that colleges do suck more money out of you by having you attend for four years. College costs $40k? Try $55k. That’s quite a large difference, practically enough for a down payment on a house. I am not arguing with your defense of summer, because you’re right, from a student’s standpoint. In the large scheme of things, however, I don’t think cutting down college to 3 years is such a crazy idea.

Perhaps it’s all the binge drinking and incredibly dumb decisions that are so prevalent across campuses which spurred Senator Alexanders idea. hmmm…

I think it doesn’t make much sense. Like the author said, you’re going to be paying extra tuition for those extra classes. Summer aid isn’t as readily available either as it is for the fall and spring semesters (at least it sure isn’t at my school). Plus with this economy what’s the rush? Graduates aren’t finding jobs, so why should we hurry to unemployment?

At my university, this just wouldn’t work. Because we live in Northern Ontario, most of the professors leave campus during the summer, and most have other jobs, in other cities. That would definitely cause problems- plus what about the people who count on the summer jobs we do? If they took away out summer, high school students would have to work non-stop allllll the time to make up for what we do- what would bars do? High schoolers can’t serve alcohol, and not many other people want to.

Okay, I don’t know about everyone else, but I have used my summers to work in retail and save a bit of money by living at home, to volunteer, and to take an unpaid internship in New York City that was one of the most valuable things I have ever done. To cancel summer would be stupid, and would prevent students from getting the real-world experience they want BEFORE jumping into the real world of good. Clearly, Lamar Alexander doesn’t value his summer interns, or the opportunities that internships offer in general. How old is he? He seems a bit out of touch. Hopefully this costs him re-election.

Actually, I understand the value of his idea however, I wonder did he consider, duh! if students stay in school all summer, the tuition will go UP, and you really wouldn’t be saving much after all? Above that is the factor of internships, studying abroad and other experiential learning activities that would be impossible to participate in if school were all year. I think the idea holds some validity but, I think it should be optional.

To correct what I wrote earlier:

I was under the impression summer would be shortened, not canceled. This puts things into a different light.

To the person who has no idea what they want to do with their life, this could be bad, difficult.

To the person that knows exactly what he wants out of life, and will go to achieve it, and not waste any time doing so, its brilliant.

I am completely behind the idea, because i know exactly what i want to do
As much as a love college, I also would like to go into the job market as fast as I can

It would require an overhaul of the entire college approach to education. GREAT! We’ve needed to do this for about forty years.
Take a student from high school. Put that student in a school environment. Teach for four years. 1/3 or more classes have NOTHING to do with the job that student wants to get after school … and we do NOT guarantee a job. Also, we’ll put you about $40,000 – $75,000 in debt when you start your job search.

We also discourage any and all values that the parents tried to instill in the student the first 18 years of the student’s life.

Who’s idea was this? If someone invented “college” today, could he sell it?

This whole system is a mess and needs to be redesigned, but there is too much money being made. It’s a sacred cow … a cash cow. Guess who is being milked.

Obviously you’re lacking ambition. I do agree that things shouldn’t change.I’m taking 17 hours working full-time and commuting 3 hours a day.Oh, and I take summer classes. I will have my bacholer’s in 3 years. Getting into law school is so much easier for me because I’m being compared to people who partied away four years of their life, while I’ve worked my ass for the three years. So I definately agree with you Lamar Alexander leave college alone. The way things are will make it easier to get into a good law school and start a great career. Btw I also have a 3.5 gpa.

The author of this article states that she wants an extra year to party the night away, but also says that taking more classes is physically impossible. These two arguments go against each other, but it brings the real point: College is what you make of it.

Currently the standard college claims to be four years, but its easy enough to drop that to three years, or drag it out for as many as you want. If you have a goal and know what you want to do, you can take the classes and get it done. If you want to stick around and party you can take a minimal course load every semester.
