The author of this article states that she wants an extra year to party the night away, but also says that taking more classes is physically impossible. These two arguments go against each other, but it brings the real point: College is what you make of it.

Currently the standard college claims to be four years, but its easy enough to drop that to three years, or drag it out for as many as you want. If you have a goal and know what you want to do, you can take the classes and get it done. If you want to stick around and party you can take a minimal course load every semester.

Obviously you're lacking ambition. I do agree that things shouldn't change.I'm taking 17 hours working full-time and commuting 3 hours a day.Oh, and I take summer classes. I will have my bacholer's in 3 years. Getting into law school is so much easier for me because I'm being compared to people who partied away four years of their life, while I've worked my ass for the three years. So I definately agree with you Lamar Alexander leave college alone. The way things are will make it easier to get into a good law school and start a great career. Btw I also have a 3.5 gpa.

It would require an overhaul of the entire college approach to education. GREAT! We've needed to do this for about forty years.
Take a student from high school. Put that student in a school environment. Teach for four years. 1/3 or more classes have NOTHING to do with the job that student wants to get after school ... and we do NOT guarantee a job. Also, we'll put you about $40,000 - $75,000 in debt when you start your job search.

We also discourage any and all values that the parents tried to instill in the student the first 18 years of the student's life.

Who's idea was this? If someone invented "college" today, could he sell it?

This whole system is a mess and needs to be redesigned, but there is too much money being made. It's a sacred cow ... a cash cow. Guess who is being milked.

To the person who has no idea what they want to do with their life, this could be bad, difficult.

To the person that knows exactly what he wants out of life, and will go to achieve it, and not waste any time doing so, its brilliant.

I am completely behind the idea, because i know exactly what i want to do
As much as a love college, I also would like to go into the job market as fast as I can

To correct what I wrote earlier:

I was under the impression summer would be shortened, not canceled. This puts things into a different light.

Actually, I understand the value of his idea however, I wonder did he consider, duh! if students stay in school all summer, the tuition will go UP, and you really wouldn't be saving much after all? Above that is the factor of internships, studying abroad and other experiential learning activities that would be impossible to participate in if school were all year. I think the idea holds some validity but, I think it should be optional.

Okay, I don't know about everyone else, but I have used my summers to work in retail and save a bit of money by living at home, to volunteer, and to take an unpaid internship in New York City that was one of the most valuable things I have ever done. To cancel summer would be stupid, and would prevent students from getting the real-world experience they want BEFORE jumping into the real world of good. Clearly, Lamar Alexander doesn't value his summer interns, or the opportunities that internships offer in general. How old is he? He seems a bit out of touch. Hopefully this costs him re-election.

At my university, this just wouldn't work. Because we live in Northern Ontario, most of the professors leave campus during the summer, and most have other jobs, in other cities. That would definitely cause problems- plus what about the people who count on the summer jobs we do? If they took away out summer, high school students would have to work non-stop allllll the time to make up for what we do- what would bars do? High schoolers can't serve alcohol, and not many other people want to.
