I never knew this until recently but apparently you are supposed to put liner on AFTER you apply your lipstick. although I generally only use it for really bold going out shades like fuchsias and stuff

I've been doing red lippie for years now, and I've never used lipliner unless I wanted to change the colour of the lipstick slightly. And I've got really pale skin-like, glow in the dark pale-and bright reds work on me.

The Body Shop makes some really great lip liner, just called Lip Line Fixer. It has no color, I love it.

L'OREAL Colour Riche lip line in Beyond Pink is also a really great one for neutral colors.

I use long-lasting lip stick and it stays on much better without lip liner. If you're using a traditional lipSTICK-definitely opt for liner. Just no need to define your lips with it…work what you've got

I agree with Anna, I saw it on some makeover show, the liner is a base you need it to help make the color richer and last longer, also another way to do this is to put on some concealer on your lips. Start at base color similar to your skin and then put on the color, the reason for this is so that you get the real color of the lipstick not the color of your lips + the lipstick, which is what you are going for.

Ahhh! No! Lip liner is nearly a must unless you want your lipstick to fade and feather after an hour (ESPECIALLY with reds). Granted, you shouldn't pick a lip liner the same color as the lipstick until you get older, but a neutral one fences the color in so your lips don't end up like Bozo.

i think anyone can go for reds too. granted it might not be appropriate for class, but i totally rock the red lipstick when the occasion calls for it (a la Blair Waldorf – my fashion role model)

hit up the makeup counters at the mall and ask them to help you find a shade that works.
