I agree, we're all going to find certain jokes funny and we're all have some kind of prejudices. However, the important thing is to know what is appropriate. It's one thing to joke around with the guys and make some really mean jokes. However, you should know better when you're around females, your girlfriend, family, strangers, etc.

Oh come one Dave Chappele, Chris Rock, George Lopez, South Park people, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama....and on and on...are racist if the definition your holding your boyfreind too is acknowledge racial differences and having a laugh at it. Part of that humor is not laughing at all but making a stereotype. Holy shit I hate race baiters.

Everyone's a little prejudice or bigoted. It all depends on how you handle your prejudices.

Also the last comment isn't fair at all. Girls can be just as racist with jokes. Just yesterday I caught a girl playfully yelling "chink" at her Asian friend.

My boyfriend sometimes has a tendency to make racist jokes as well. He doesn't know how to feel sometimes, I think, because his father is definitely a bigot, but his mother is Puerto-Rican-American. For the most part, he's aware his father's viewpoints are racist (and also sexist), and that awareness is an initial step. He also knows how I feel concerning racist/sexist joking, and he's defended himself by saying that jokes are just for humor, not an actual reflection of his viewpoints.

I mainly just try to lead by good example, and at least in my presence, I think I've had an impact on him. So has his mother whapping him over the head; she seems to tolerate her husband's bigotry to an extent, but she won't allow her sons to reflect it.

P.S. I hate when people lead a comment or joke with, "I'm not racist, but..." If you say this, you're probably a little racist (same with sexist). I'm honestly okay with a little humor, but if you wouldn't say it in the presence of someone in the subject group, it's probably not okay.

"he’s basing his opinions on someone else’s stereotype or perhaps just what he was told growing up"

You can't really make this statement considering you don't know where his racism is coming from. Perhaps it's not coming from someone elses stereotype OR from what he was taught growing up, perhaps he has had very bad experiences with people from another race and has formed HIS OWN opinions. It is quite possible. Although it's still wrong to judge an entire race on even a few experiences you've had, it's easily done. I have had horrible experiences myself with certain races, to the extent of being SHOVED down three flights of stairs because I accidentally stepped on a girls shoe walking up them in middle school, she turned around and spit in my face telling me I stepped on her cause I was a racist bitch and she shoved me backwards down the stairs. That could have very easily made me think poorly about people of her race, but I realize that girl doesn't represent everyone of her race, and I had plenty of friends of that race at the time.

Perhaps what "Tommy" needs is to go to a cultural fair or event for the race he despises so much, and actually get to know some people of that race so he will come to see that they don't all fit under his stereotypes.
