The Black Friday Go-To Outfit

Who wears a bulky jacket? That ish will only slow you down on your sprint to the shoe section!

I am so excited for Thanksgiving break that I can barely contain myself. Instead of doing my homework, I’m watching Paula Dean stuff her turkey with a stick of butter on TV and listening to my mom describe her fancy new table settings to me over the phone.

The only thing better than stuffing my face with as much food as humanly possible is the fact that I get to burn off all the extra calories shopping amazing sales the entire next day. Yes, I am one of the brave ones (or freakin’ nuts, depending on how you look at it), who will arise before the crack of dawn and chug four cups of coffee before heading out into the crowds of all the other crazy women who will do pretty much anything for a good sale.

What I’ve come to realize through years of taking on a linebacker stance and charging my way through crowds is that the perfect Black Friday outfit is an essential to getting the most out of your one day of ridiculously discounted items. You can’t wrestle those pumps out of that woman’s greasy paws in just anything. So here it is, the go-to Black Friday outfit that will carry you through the day and help to make sure you get the bargains you’re after.

The Outfit:

Pants: Leggings are the perfect leg wear. They are super comfy; allow you to move, bend and run without having a plumbers crack; and the stirrup on these ones will keep them from riding up your leg all day.

Top: Dressing in layers is the key to a successful day and for avoiding fitting room lines. A body-hugging tank is perfect for throwing clothes over your outfit for a quick in-the-aisle try on. Since it’s getting chilly out, you need some sort of cover over your tank, but a bulky coat is only going to get in the way. Instead go for a cardigan/scarf combo. Both are thin and lightweight, so you won’t be sweating like a pig, and if you get too warm they can easily be stuffed into your purse.

Shoes: Flats like those featured above that bend with your foot are comfortable and won’t give you those nasty blisters that some of the other flats will. Plus they are easy to slip on and off when trying on shoes and clothes.

Bag: You need enough room in your bag to store some snacks, your wallet, coupons and your sweater when you get too hot. This is big enough to hold everything you need without being to bulky or clunky. You can also adjust the strap and wear it across your body to prevent major shoulder and back pains the next day.

General Guidelines:

No Jewelry! I know, girls; we all want to look cute and show the world that we have amazing fashion sense. But if there is one day of the year that you should be accessorized, it’s today. Necklaces, bracelets and rings are just going to get in the way when you’re trying on clothes and rummaging through bins. (Plus they can be a major health hazard if your necklace happens to get stuck on a certain madwoman’s bag as she beelines for the register…)

Have Socks With You: The stores are so packed that you’ll just end up cursing the salesman out when you ask for peds and he disappears for 30 minutes. Don’t waste time or energy yelling at the poor overworked sales people. Bring your own socks so you can try on shoes quickly and get the hell out of there.

Bring Fuel! No matter how functional your outfit is, if you have low blood sugar it’s not going to get you anywhere. Either someone will find you passed out behind a rack of winter coats, or you’ll get so moody you’ll end up in a fistfight in aisle 5. Make sure you have a water and a few easy snacks in your purse. (I’m talking granola bars, not Tupperware containers of turkey leftovers.)
