Collegethriving made no note of the fact that she had been anorexic in her original post, so it came off as insensitive and uncalled for. I may be confident in my body, but it still sucks when you constantly have people putting you in categories you don't belong in. Which was why I referred you to that article, not for the story, but instead so you could see that this isn't the first time I've found myself being put into categories because of my body, and yes, I realize that collegethrivings comment wasn't aimed at me, but as someone who shares the body type of the person she was calling "gross", it certainly hit home. And yes the article in my journal was offensive, I wrote it directly after the incident and until now, for my personal use only. I would never have called them blobs had they not spent 30 minutes trying to personally attack me. If they don't want people calling them names, then they shouldn't call others names. And if those girls ever read my story they should be embarrassed, over the fact that they were complete and utter assholes for no reason, like I said in my story, paybacks a bitch, so it's best to not be one in the first place.

And I just read your post that you referred us to... WOW, I see that as ten times more offensive than collegethriving's comment. I understand that these girls were rude, but they didn't REALLY insult you, and you making fun of overweight girls who are trying to get fit but don't know how is incredibly insensitive. If I was overweight and I read that, I would be embarrassed and never want to go to the gym because I would be viewed as a "blob" who doesn't know what they're doing. So, Casey, thanks for helping fight obesity in this country?
I don't think anyone's uber upset after collegethrivings comment, it may have even helped a troubled girl who's dying to get super thin. But I definitely see how someone could be upset after your post.
Even one of your "supporters" posted a negative comment and you said it was only your personal journal, but it's public and you just referenced it here?

Or maybe you could take collegethrivings comment as something that would make another girl who looked at this post and was like "ahh I wish I looked like that!" to be more confident and realize that you don't have to show your ribs to be beautiful. It's not all about you Casey. You understand that anorexia is a disease so why are you being mean to collegethriving over her views on body image.

I know my mother taught me "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". And telling a former-anorexic, "My ribs are showing and I'm still healthy" probably hit her harder than you know. I doubt you were actually offended by her comment about "ribs showing yuck" considering you seem quite confident in your body from your comments.

Even if you don't agree with someone you should see that sometimes you need to put away you personal issues and instead of getting angry with someone for their view, try and see WHY they have that view and sympathize with them. It will make you a happier person.

Collegethriving, your original comment pissed me off because by saying, "that girl does not look “fit”, you can see her ribs! Yuck." you basically just said any girl whose ribs stick out is gross, and considering I am one of those girls (by nature) it was a rather offensive comment. But to be honest, it wasn't your comment alone that set me off, it was just the final straw, if you read the article "Attack of the Blobs: Gym Edition" on my blog (linked to my name) you may have a better understanding of why I got upset over your comment.

I do apologize for being offensive though. But I think you can understand where I was coming from. And now that you've explained it, I understand your position as well. But just because anorexic girls strive to see their ribs doesn't mean that any girl whose ribs show is gross, or "not fit", and girls like that shouldn't have to be shoved into a category with people who have a disease, or told that they look gross when that's how they were born. Anorexic girls are going to strive for whatever goals they have despite whatever pictures are out there on the internet. Those girls have a disease and censoring pictures isn't going to help them get over it.

and btw, thanks for sticking up for me in the past. I don't really remember commenters names, I recognize people who comment often, but I don't remember who's who. I just comment to people on a post by post basis.

And Emily, considering most of the comments on this site judge one another based on two sentence posts, I think that's just a fact that we're all going to have to live with. But despite the fact that I don't have a personal relationship with anorexia, I still take offense when someone says that a girl who shares my body type looks gross. I think a better rule of thumb would be that we all should refrain from making derogatory comments, because once one is made it's sure to hit home for a number of people. But people really have a great lack of respect for each other now-a-days, and considering this is the internet that respect becomes non-existent.

Yea-- so without commenting on the whole issue at hand, I think a rule of thumb is to not comment about anorexia and body issues unless you actually know about the issue. It's complex and you can't understand it so don't judge or interpret what you "think" people are saying.

And casey, "she's probably one of those who thinks anyone under a size 14 is anorexic", ughh aren't we old enough to not judge someone based on a 2 sentence post on the internet

Well im not anorexic and never have been so i really cant comment on this but i hear what collegethrivings saying. its no ones fault for perceiving a picture someway, its just a truth that nowadays in society so much can influence anorexia. not saying that that girl in the picture is anorexic, but that can totally influence some poor girl to want to show her ribs. And Ive read about the whole pushing that it's not enough until you can "count your ribs", society pushing people into some crazy stuff

Casey, I actually have commented a few times defending you when people give you a hard time for commenting on so many topics- but in this case, honestly, sometimes you shouldn't comment on topics that you aren't informed about. Google "ribs showing" and I'm sure you will find hundreds of PRO-ANA websites, probably like the ones that put me over the edge. Pictures of ribs showing are the target for "thinspiration" photos on pro-ana websites.
Sure, maybe you think you have a similar body type but in reality I wasn't referencing how someone's body should look. And I never called the girl anorexic- please don't put words in my mouth.
It's hard to explain to someone very unfamiliar with the culture- but a visible ribcage is a huge triger and "goal" for anorexia. And, again don't assume that I'm "upset over pictures of girls who look different than me", I'm perfectly comfortable with my body. I just hate that it's a reality now that photos and articles like this that aren't intended to scream "be skinnier!" can be hell for thousands of people. It's nothing against this photo or Collegecandy for posting it, just a sad reality that that picture can be a PROANA tool.

Well then you should know better than most that womens bodies come in all different shapes and sizes. For some women (like me) being fit means our ribs might stick out. I have a large rib cage and you can ALWAYS see my ribs no matter my weight. So the fact that you think since my ribs stick out I'm anorexic pisses me off. The girl in the picture doesn't look unhealthy, I have a body that looks very similar to hers and I'm actually at the higher end of the BMI for my height, and if I wore anything close to a size 14 I would be morbidly obese, probably to the point where I would die. But that's MY body. It doesn't mean someone else who wears a size 14 would even be considered fat.

What's healthy for one girl may not be healthy for another, and vice versa. there's no need to get upset over pictures of girls who look different than we do. Just accept the fact that we all look different. We can't hide all the pictures of skinny girls just because someone might try and kill themselves over it, that's just absurd.
