The Rival Rundown: Virginia vs. Virginia Tech

Welcome back to The Rival Rundown! If you’ve always wanted to give props to your school on CC, now’s your chance! Shoot us an email explaining what’s awesome and unique about your school (or what stinks about Rival U) at rivalrundown@collegecandy.com!

Old Dominion fans, take note! This week our rivalry takes us to the fair state of Virginia, where the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech hope to take home top honors.

Quick Facts

Virginia: University of Virginia or UVA, a public research university in Charlottesville, VA with 13,000 undergraduates.  Mascot is the Cavalier (or Wahoo).
Virginia Tech: The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a public land grant polytech university in  Blacksburg, VA with 24,00 undergraduates. Mascot is the Hokie.

1. Commonwealth Cup / Rivalry Record

Virginia: 3 wins/ 37 wins (5 games tied)
Virginia Tech: 11 wins / 49 wins

Three credits to: No question, Virginia Tech! Good show!

2. Mascot Matchup

Virginia: Officially known as the UVA Cavaliers, for its historical significance, the ladies and gents of Virginia are also known as the Wahoos, for the school’s rallying cry (“wah-hoo-wah!”)
Virginia Tech: The Hokies are also known as the Fighting Gobblers, and are represented by a giant turkey!

Three credits to: Virginia. Amongst these multi-moniker’d rivals, “Wahoo” is just more fun to say.

3. Fun Facts

Virginia: Founded by Thomas Jefferson, UVA is the only university in the United States to be named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Virginia Tech: Was twice named by Princeton Review as #1 in the Best Campus Food category. No mystery meat here!

Three credits to:  A close one…but we’ll go with Virginia Tech. Never underestimate the value of good food on campus!

4. Ass-Kicking Alumni

Virginia: Katie Couric, Tina Fey, Tiki Barber, Ted Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy
Virginia Tech: Michael Vick, Nikki Giovanni (Professor)

Three credits to: Sorry, Virgina Tech, but Michael Vick is really not helping your case. Virginia knocks this one out of the park!

5. Acceptance Rate Agony

Virginia: 36.7%
Virginia Tech: 65.4%

Three credits to:  Absolutely Virginia.

And the diploma goes toVirginia! Though the Hokies crush the Cavaliers in football, UVA gets a “wah-hoo-wah” in nearly everything else.

Virginia Tech is so much more of a diverse learning institute. Anyone who knows these two schools well enough knows that walking on to UVA’s campus is like walking on eggshells. Competition is so very rampat on this campus whether it be in academics, sports, or otherwise. VT is so much more inviting and open; I won’t argue that UVA is one of the best, if not the best, public university in the country; however, having a great college experience comes from more than just the ranking of the college you attend.

    HOKIE HOKIE, HI!

hmm you seem to have left out a few things: I’ll help you out.

the general douchebag quality of the student population at UVA. Really, you can ask any other Virginia school. Popped collars, and wearing ties and dresses (!!! really wtf) to football games.
    ex:
It isn’t the campus, it is the ‘grounds’. I’m not a Junior, I’m a ‘third year’. I’m not a Business major, I’m a ‘commerce’ major. I’m not a college student, I’m a ‘douche bag’.

VT has way nicer people, more school spirit, and waaaay better parties.
The best thing about UVA is Al Groh. God I love that man.

You should come visit and see for yourself :)

I attend UVA at the moment and I’m considering transferring for all the reasons Erin just named.

While UVA may have a lower acceptance rate, Virginia Tech’s Engineering and Architecture schools are ranked higher.

And any person who stepped onto the Virginia Tech campus would automatically feel at home. The feel of community here is amazing! Even my sister who is a UVA grad loved the atmosphere here at Tech when she visited and was amazed at how school spirited we are (aka she was shocked people actually wore VT t-shirt around campus instead of dressing up every day for class like at UVA) and she loved how nice everyone was.

Plus, our campus is just a million times more gorgeous.

I go to Virginia Tech, and I truly feel as though I’m part of a community. UVA has a reputation for being snobbish and just all-around nasty.

Plus, you could have mentioned out #1 in the nation architecture program, the $50 million grant we just got to foster a national security program, the fact that our campus looks like Hogwarts, etc.

Tech is my home. I doubt many people from UVA can say that.

These are all very interesting points! Bee and Erin, your testimony is proof that a college’s “worth” cannot be merely captured by a few objective facts. That being said, my goal in writing these posts is to give a cursory overview of the schools and what makes them rivals, but it’s really the student experience that matters.

By that same token, Katie and Becca, your comments speak volumes!

Wow all the tech students who commented here are very bitter. I go to UVA and I love it here. Its hang just a matter of who you hang out with. I like tech, but when it comes to the liberal arts, you have to go to UVA

  8. Erin says:
    Wed, 9th Dec 200910:27 pm

No, no we’re not bitter. We just don’t agree with her decision – obviously.

The criteria she used to judge both of our schools is, as she said, a “cursory overview”- meant to entertain more than anything. We’re just providing some important information that she doesn’t have access to- In order to prove that our school kicks your schools ass. which it does.

William & Mary is obviously better than these two. ;)

I have friends at both schools and just from viewing their pics on facebook I totally back Erin and Katie’s comments. My friends who attend UVA are a little more prim and proper and my friends at VT are definitely more lively and party oriented, that’s not to say they don’t focus on education, their personalities are just a bit more fun. I’ve never seen pictures from a school event on my UVA friends pages, but there are constantly new pics from football games etc. on my VT friends pages.

as a UVA student, i feel like i should defend my school…we’re not douchebags, we just really enjoy our school’s traditions that set us apart from other schools (dressing up for football games, calling it “grounds” and not “campus,” being a “third year” and not a “junior”, etc). it’s really unfair to generalize everyone who goes here as snobs, especially if you haven’t met everyone. i’ve met some of the nicest, most accepting and down-to-earth people ever here.
i feel like the rivalry between tech and uva is somewhat one-sided sometimes. we get a lot more animosity from tech people than we have toward them. :/

I love how many hokies commented on this :)

I don’t have any animosity towards UVA personally (except the whole “first year” thing does bother me), but I have a couple friends who go there and even they admit that many people there are pretty snobby. I have absolutely never heard any other Tech student say that they didn’t love everything about Tech, especially the people.

And for the record, I think the hokiebird is a waaaay better mascot!

Becca’s point that Virginia Tech looks like Hogwarts just made me want to apply even more.

  14. Katie says:
    Thu, 10th Dec 20093:24 pm

I don’t think anyone who commented who goes to Tech is bashing the people who go to UVA… I just think all of us are completely in love with our school and are standing up for it!

Wow, in all of my years writing for the web I can honestly say I’ve never seen such positive, non-defamatory comments! Do they have something at Virginia Tech that I missed? Unicorns? Solid gold toilets? Fat-free chocolate chip pancakes?

I simply don’t see the rivalry to be that big of a deal at UVA I suppose, I just see more Tech kids getting into that nonsense. I am not exactly going to UVA for “the time of my life”.Just saying, its #2 public school in the country and thats because I can’t afford to hitch a ticket to Berkley. UVA is great for academics and the resources to do SERIOUS research. Social life is what you make of it, I don’t think everybody here is snobby, you meet alot of people from different backrounds, its just a dumb stereotype. Maybe your school is more “fun”, but man in the long run it won’t even matter, because I love it here.

Forgive my poor grammar, and does not reflect my education. Just my 3rd world upbringing.

  19. Becca says:

Actually, Tech landed me an internship at a major law firm and undergraduate research in my sophomore year. So I’d say the academics are working just fine for me.

I also forgot to mention that we’re ranked #1 in the nation for food.
