Yeah the majors that teach you how to think critically are very useless. What should we only have business, math or chemistry to choose from? Once upon a time, a person (well man) who was educated in the arts was held to the highest standard. I'm pretty sure only liberal arts majors are still looking for work. My neighbor has two degrees (engineering and something in science I can't remember) and graduated three years ago. She just found a job, out of state. Liberal arts is just that - liberal. You can pretty much find any job you want because you have been taught different subjects and can you use that to your advantage.

I personally love the humanities and I don't think they are a waste of time. Programs like philosophy or art history are the type of classes that make you into a well rounded person. The humanities teach students how to think analytically, how to write coherently and most importantly the art of persuasion. Engineering and busisness are great programs too but if students are only applying to them to make money and end up being miserable during college then they will most likely end up being miserable for the rest of their lives as well(once they find that job). I guess I'm just one of those ppl who believe in the "love what u do and you'll succeed" cuz passion will be yur drive type of thing. I have friends who have graduated in accounting and biochem, and even they can't find jobs.

I think schools shouldn't completly dismiss the humanities as useless but if they want to put it on the back burner then the least they could do is to give a minor option to students.

Good post. I read that NY Times article as well. IMO that's what the point of general education courses are for, to make an individual well-rounded. I don't want a degree in the liberal arts if I can't find a job afterwards. Who really wants to rely on their parents when they're 30?

College for me is for getting an education as well as preparation for a job. Majoring in the humanities is fine if you want to go to law school but its not smart for most people.

I'm not saying that college should do away with courses in the humanities, I love courses like art history, philosophy, and world religions, but that doesn't mean that they should be majors. And I kind of support the idea of doing away with useless majors. Although now college is becoming a glorified vocational school.

Sometimes colleges mislead their students by telling them that any degree will get them a job and that is just not true. Its very hard for most people to market degrees in American Studies or English. Most HR managers require specific degrees for their companies.

If you're going to be a nurse then you should get a nursing degree, if you want to be a programmer then you need a degree in CS, if you want to go into engineering it helps to major in that and not sociology.

I hate how creative, intellectual "trades" like art, philosophy, or the humanities etc. are tossed to the waste side. If you get a liberal arts degree, it's up to you to figure out how that relates to real-life. I'm a first-year and already feel this mounting pressure to choose a major that makes money, er whatever that means, after graduation. Holy hell... mid life crisis at 18.
