Battle Of The Funny: Jay Leno vs. Conan O’Brien [POLL]
January 8, 2010 Posted in Buzz

First it was Paris and Nicole. Then it was Edward and Jacob. Now, it’s Conan and Leno.
Yup, it seems the late night kings of comedy are splitting the country as they battle it out over air times.
Here’s the deal: Leno’s new gig at 10 p.m. isn’t working out so well. Shocking? Not so much. NBC moved him to this slot over the summer hoping he’d be cheaper entertainment then those super pricey dramas. And while Jay may be cheaper, he’s definitely not entertaining. NBC execs, therefore, are working on another little switcharoo which will move Leno back to his 11:35 slot. A slot currently occupied by Conan O’Brien.
So where is Conan supposed to go?
He can’t exactly move back in to his old place, as its currently inhabited by the “comedy” of Jimmy Fallon (how he got that coveted spot I’ll never understand). And Conan’s show would never work at 10p.m., mostly because his target audience (i.e. college boys) are too busy playing Halo and ish to tune in so early.
So, again, where’s Conan supposed to go?!
What’s gonna happen to my favorite little (er, not so) late night TV host? Come on, I can’t be the only one who loves his twiggy arms and finds his quirky, mischievous demeanor totally hot. Oh wait… back to my point…
Some people are saying that Conan might be getting the boot, something Jay Leno has been joking about, but I’m not sure I find this so funny. In fact, I don’t find Jay funny at all. Or Jimmy. How is it, then, that the only late night host (besides Chelsea Handler – maybe they should move her to the 10pm slot?!) could be on his way out!? I won’t stand for this! It’s time to take a stand and choose your side, people. I’m taking my position on Team Conan. Which team will you be on?
Tell us what you're thinking...

How on earth and his forever widening chin * apparently every year older pants rises relates to it* can appeal to the masses with backroom comedy gags where he is the only one laughing i have no idea. Maybe it speaks better to the uptight , somewhat vain and insincere people in california. New york has Saturday night live state of mind. Go back home Conan, People there have a sense of humor.

Conan all the way. Leno sucks. His pathetic whiny voice and stupid smirks and laughing at his own jokes ( number one rule in comedy – don't ).
He's not funny. He's fooking annoying as hell.
Fire Leno! Go with Conan!

It's JAY — all the way. Conan is NOT funny. He has the demeanor of a 12-year old. He is constantly primping in front of the camera like a girl. It is utterly disgusting! Get him off the air. Leno has aproven track record; bring him back and the ratings will rise. Conan wins Letterman a ton of fans!

Jay and Conan are both quality hosts. Jay is better suited to mature audiences, Conan to those under 21. But Jay is the current king of late night programming, and he deserves that title. Removing him from the Tonight Show was ANOTHER huge mistake by NBC. Failure to restore him to that position will be just another nail in NBC's coffin.

If the NBC/Comcast deal happens,, then I can see Jay taking back The Tonight Show, Conan going to Fox or syndication, Jimmy being fired and Chelsea Handler (a Comcast employee) taking over Late Night. It's funny that no one cares for poor Carson Daly,, but rightfully so…
I think that no matter what happens, Conan will win at the end of the day.. He will make more money reguardless..
I bet Conan's rating are doing better these days…

How anybody can find Leno more entertaining than Conan is absolutely beyond me. I've never found Leno to be even remotely funny. Comedy for the comatose I suppose. Then again, nobody has ever gone poor pandering to the lowest common denominator (read: the morons). Maybe that's why most shows with any modicum of intelligence tank on network television. Coco deserves better. They need to figure out how to effectively monetize this internet thing here and "give the fools their tartar sauce."

Carson was the beginning, so they will all be compared to him. As for the current group, Conan is the one for the rest of us. Everyone in my age range, 20s to mid 30s, likes Conan because he is not stuffy and doesn't take himself too seriously. If you don't like silly, he might not be your cup of tea, but if you get past the little dances, he is definitely the most intelligent and quick witted of the bunch. As far as Leno, he uses the same jokes Conan used the night before. It is just sad, really.
I'm with Coco!

Whoever the "Genius" was that thought Jay Leno would thrive in an earlier time-slot needs to be "kicked to the curb"!!! I am glad that Conan took a stand. NBC caters to Leno and expects everyone else to just "fall in line"!! Who the "hell" do they think they are!! They have treated Conan with so much disrespect by assuming he would just "pucker up" and kiss Jay's a**!!! I love Jay Leno but I do not feel that he is entitled to just return to his previous time-slot. Jay Leno needs to just accept defeat, leave and "get a life"!!!
Jason says:

It is very unfortunate that the NBC exec's have muddled all this up! And they're presenting it like it is a feud between these two good men. I'll bet they are laughing (behind the scenes… together!) as they're counting the millions it will add to each of their contracts! They are not enemies and shouldn't be presented as such!
NBC should never have taken Jay off the 11:35 slot. He proved himself there for many years and the ratings were high. He has not done well at the 10:00 — people want drama and excitement before the news – and Conan has tanked at the 11:35 slot. He doesn't have what it takes to pull off this traditional time after the news. He is not that funny; actually is rather silly – more like a teenage geek kid – than appealing to an adult audience. He also does too much self promoting and girlish primping.
MAYBE they should scrap them both and start out with something fresh entirely! Just make a decision and move on… this is getting old! BUT — the head of the top exec who made this mess should rolllllllllllllllllll.
Nicolle says:

You do know that putting Jay at the 10 slot pretty much sabotaged any show that went on after?
The ratings for local NBC news shows that aired from 11:00-11:30 also tanked after the Jay Leno show started. That, and a lot of Conan fans are actually capable of and choose to watch his show online (on sites such as Hulu). It's not so much that the ratings were bad, it's more that NBC wasn't making as much money from advertising… and they're dicks.
It wasn't Leno's fault, but he seems pretty classless when he could have just retired or at least consulted with Conan before he took NBC's deal and screwed him over.
I don't find The Chin funny because his jokes pander to the LCD and his delivery is TURR-I-BLE.

I would not object to Chelsea Handler moving over to NBC, I watch her show on occasion and she is very good, but had to support Conan on this, so that is what I did with my one vote.
I agree with some of the other posts, Jay plays to the middle american LCD – he has a few bits I like, but he is Milquetoast (gotta love spell check) at best, really does nothing that is creative. Go CONAN!!!

You wonder how Jimmy Fallon got the Late Night gig? The same way Conan got it. As a affront to anyone with taste or an intelligent sense of humor. As a long-time Late Night w/Letterman fan, I always thought NBC only kept Conan on out of spite for losing Letterman, because Conan was just so terrible. Over the years, I'd periodically give him another chance, but just can't bring myself to tolerate him.
I was in my early 20's when he started Late Night and his juvenile attempt at humor was (and is) pathetic (even for my young age, at the time). Hard to believe that's all his Harvard education can muster. It was more shocking when he got the Tonight Show, as we hoped someone would come to their senses and he would disappear.
Not that we watch Leno (but respect him tremendously, and he was great at stand-up years ago), but we're pleased as punch with this brouhaha as we're hoping Conan stops sucking up airtime and somehow goes away. We'd much rather have Leno on, on the occasions when we might flip over from The Daily Show/Colbert Report hour.

NBC Exec's have messed this up. They should never have taken Jay off the 11:35 Tonight Show to begin with. This program is an American tradition and requires someone with class. Conan O'Brien proves time and again that he is a silly jerk. He has no humor, is a terrible interviewer and is too impressed with himself. They need to get him off the air totally as he is an irritating jokster. It is important that they pay heed to what the try public wants, not the 15-year olds that keep trying to promote O'Brien. Wake up NBC and let America go to sleep, watching a time-worthy show.
Catherine says:

Jay – all the way. Conan is a jerk — very self absorbed. What were they thinking to put him on The Tonight Show???!!! He should have been cancelled within weeks of his original broadcast. Not funny. Not entertaining. Just silly – like a child. Jay has a broadbase appeal and needs to be given the respect he deserves.
lissa says:
Fri, 15th Jan 20109:45 pm
Sorry Steve, but that's just not true. Networks don't just keep people around out of spite, its all about money. And Late Night with Conan O'Brien got ratings in that time slot. Ratings=advertising money=happy network.
That being said, the question of whether replacing Leno with Conan was a good one is still up for debate. It would be interesting to know what would have happened if Conan were given a better lead-in (i.e. not the "experiment" of Leno in prime time) and more time to develop an audience in the new timeslot. Remember, Jay was being clobbered by Letterman when he first started but eventually took the lead and stayed on top. New shows don't take off overnight.
In the end, I feel that NBC should have canceled Leno's new show and put a quality drama into the 10 pm slot to give The Tonight Show a better lead in and allow it to develop and increase the audience.
But instead they chose to continue to complicate the situation, and now have an even bigger mess on their hands. This could very well be the beginning of the end of the network that was number 1 just a little over a decade ago.

This is a generational conflict. Conan is a Harvard graduate – he's the most creative and innovative personality on television today along with being the most self effacing and honorable.
Jay Leno is an outdated artifact. His humor is incredibly repetitive and worn out – panders to lower IQ ranges who can't understand Conan's cerebral approach. NBC just cashed in their entire future for two more years of big jaw back stabber and his ridiculous headlines bit. Did you see this, did you hear about this … Jay Leno is a dishonorable SOB. He backstabbed Johnny, he backstabbed Dave, and now he backstabbed CoCo; but he'll lose this time. Watch and see.

There are several comments that Conan appeals to the 20 – 30 crowd …. so NOT TRUE! That's our generation, but Conan hits the 12-15 year olds. For those who say he is educated; WHY doesn't he act like it instead of romping around like a teenager on steroids. He constantly is primping his hair – like he thinks it's cute; but it is plain ugly. He is responsive and irratating beyond belief. He is the biggest mistake ever on late night television. I'm NOT saying Jay is all THAT; but when you compare the two — it's Jay without doubt. Still think NBC should find a new solution perhaps involving NEITHER. But Conan has GOT TO GO! It's upsetting to even turn on the telly and have to look at the jerk.

Conan!
Jay has had his chance, and promised the Tonight Show to Conan in 2004. Regardless of what happened since then, what is going on now is WRONG.
Jay needs to just say, no, I'm done. My time is obviously over on late night, it's time for other things.
An NBC needs to go screw themselves.

Conan 100%. The man went to harvard for christsake and he has written on a number of award winning shows. Jay just repeats jokes from bad writers like a parrot. I used to think both were good guys but Jay has been a real jerk lately. People who love Leno are probably the same people who buy joke books and memorize them for work and parties, lame. Leno is for 60+ yr olds and those who long for Bob Hope.

By the way, geez steve, are you sure you weren't in your early 20's in 1920? Do you like knock knock jokes? Have you ever been to a party? pleased as punch? Brouhaha? Well I see you think its the bee's knees that Conan is leaving. No more of that horrible unscripted humor, how ghastly! Andrew keeps saying Conan is better because he is a Harvard grad. Geez — you'd think a Harvard grad had some common sense, wouldn't ya? He's a childish jerk who acts like he didn't finish middle school, much less grad school. He's whining like a baby; yet he's the one who failed to make the ratings. Time to get him off the air. His foolish antics were tolerated long enough! Yeah for Jay — all the way!

Jay Leno is just too damn old, and he needs to sit his azz down.Hell his hair turned gray damn near over night!!! Isn't the optimal goal to be able to retire while you can still get around good??? RETIRE MANNNNN!!!!!!!
What would be really ironic is if this happens: Jay moves back to the tonight show and the ratings are even worse for him. Then what?

Don't understand these comments about Conan being funny. The man has NO humor whatsoever. His show consists of inane and stupid segments where he promotes himself — oh, his hair is so great; oh, he is so cute — ZUCK! He is ugly and his humor is lame. Conan is just plain stupid. HE is the one who failed to get the ratings — NOBODY sane wants to watch him. Good luck to him — rich bastard now that he is but AT LEAST he won't be sucking up air space any more.

Andrew, sorry to unintentionally mislead you, but punch/brouhaha was a bit of poetic license you apparently didn't get. (Not a joke, just a form of prose.) As I said, I just respect Jay from his stand-up days. Before The Tonight Show, he came to my college and did a great stand-up routine for about 3 hours with no break. Never seen another comedian go on for that long, that good.
Conan's much older than I am, but as evidenced by responses here, much of what he does comes across as childish. Yes, he went to Harvard, but from what I've seen of his humor, he's far from cerebral. A good word to describe him would be sophomoric: intellectually pretentious, overconfident, conceited, etc., but immature. Maybe I've just always caught him on a bad night, or maybe he improved a bit over time, but when he took over Late Night he was really bad. And I've never seen much from him to change that opinion. So I just didn't want that coming to the revered Tonight Show (respected, even though I rarely watch it).
OK, maybe I should get a sense of humor. Maybe I should take yours, because as a Conan fan, you're not going to need it.
All this being said, I'll just stick with the Daily Show/Colbert Report for my daily humor fix.

I first was upset with Jay Leno, I thought he made a sellfish move until I found out that he was pushed out of his 11:35 slot. He would of been better off waiting for Conan's ratings to go down, then coming back in the 11:35 slot continuing his high ratings.

So you hate Conan and li9ek those two. That makes absolutely no sense. All there have the same humor and are friends (Colbert/Stewart/Conan "feud' was one of the funniest things ever)
Only people who like Jay are the ones who need a joke where the punchline is seen coming from a thousand miles away, and they need to hear a rimshot from Kevin to know when to laugh.
Jay is also a thief who stole material from Howard Stern.

i want to give an international perspective.i live in india and i used to watch leno everyday…funny show with a funny monologue(it had two or three really funny jokes everynight) and a good variety in other segments(from jaywalking to headlines).
when conan took over i was shocked to see that anyone could possibly allow such a childish not funny at all show to be aired…i promise 90% of indian audience left with leno.conan's show had the worst monologue,he should have fired his writers after the first episode aired..i personally believe andy richter had a better sense of humor than conan.then there was a time when every night of the week there was one segment dedicated to his 'war' with the newark mayor..or the segment with the new moon vampire assistant bit..it was so boring and repetitive that the remaining 10% audience also quit watching..most of the times even the guests were funnier than him…all he had to offer was jumping around, climbing his desk and act out the worst impressions ever…u could always see from the crowd sitting right behind andy richter that 99% of them never laughed during the show…just gave a fake applause.
finally i wud say that better sense has prevailed and leno has been brought back…and hoping with him some of the lost glry of the show would return.

Ok, all you Conan fans are on here crying o Jay sucks Conan is better, most of you say he is way better but all in all he took the tonight show down the shitter! People can blame it on Jay's show for the lead in. But if you are like me you time what show your going to watch, little alone the tonight show. This show is epic! Once they turned the show over to Conan 50% of the viewers left, didn't watch said f%@k this shit, it's not worth watching anymore. And I know what you people are going to say " Well why did jay's show fail?" f%@k come on a late show at 10:00 what the hell was NBC thinking? Jay did it because he loves being on tv, not for the money he's got enough of that. And also he was pushed off the "Tonight Show" by Conan! Not to many people know that but 4 years ago Conan's people told NBC we want the tonight show, if not we are walking! So NBC didn't expect jay leno to hold on to the number 1 spot for that long…But my f#@k he did and he did it with class! So he got pushed out! Now Jay is saying F#@k you Conan got to hell pay backs a bitch! And also one more thing I would like to add is that All these people saying there Conan fan's, there's a F#@K load of ya's, well why didn't he get the ratings? Why do you call yourself a Conan fan when you's don't watch the show? huh? But hey Conan got 45 million and a new show hopefully at 11:35, So we will all see who wins the late night comp!
